Megjegyzések I. Károly első és második házasságához (original) (raw)

As it is widely known, one of the most important sources for the history of the Hungarian Angevins the Illuminated Chronicle states, that Charles I of Hungary had three wives: Mary of Bytom, Beatrice of Luxembourg, and Elizabeth of Poland, which was for a long time accepted by all historians. 1988 however, Gyula Kristó came up with a new approach, and stated, that the above mentioned part of the chronicle was incomplete, and Charles I had four wives. According to Kristó the first of them was the daughter of Leo II of Galicia. Although, Kistó's opinion caused some criticism manly by Polish historians, but in the Hungarian research it found widely acceptance. Despite that, the exact date of the marriage just as the motive of the Hungarian-Galician alliance isn't clear till now. In connection with these, the exact date of the second marriage is also questionable just as the usefulness of the Duchy of Bytom from the perspective of the Hungarian King. This paper aims to clear these open questions in a Central and Eastern European perspective.
