Analysis of Cited Information Sources in Nigerian Agricultural Research with Emphases on Animal Health and Production

The purpose of this paper is to investigate through citation analysis, the types of information resources Nigerian agricultural science researchers (with particular reference to animal health and production) use in their scholarly communication process. The design of the study is a citation analysis approach. Two main line journals in animal health and production namely; Nigerian Journal of Animal Production and Nigerian Veterinary Journal were used for this study. All the volumes of these journals for a period of seven years were used for the study. References in these journals were harvested and used for the analysis. There were a total of 8328 citations harvested from the journals out of which 58% of them are journal citations and books and monographs accounted for 24%. The findings also reveal that more than 31% of the cited sources were published between 1991 and 2000 while 25.9% were published from 1981 to 1990. Materials of 2001 to date constituted 20.2%. There is also a very low citation to electronic sources which would have provided citations to more current materials. Similarly, authorship pattern reveals that multiple authors dominate the cited sources. About 21 journals were identified as the most frequently cited journals while most frequently researched animal is poultry. The age of the cited sources suggests that the researchers lack access to current research and therefore has a lot of policy implications to Nigerian university libraries in terms of subscribing to current journals in the libraries with emphasis on the identified frequently cited journals. This is a fundamental study with interest in identifying the sources of information for Nigerian researchers interested in animal health and production, the volume of research in the area, authorship pattern and the most consulted journals in the area.

Journals Published in Agricultural Field in The Last Five Years Bibliometric Analysis

Today, scientific publications published in every field offer important contributions to both scientific activities and technological developments. As a matter of fact, access to information is fast and easy, and scientific activities can be observed and analyzed. The bibliometry, which performs the quantitative analysis of scientific publications, enables the analysis of publications published in a particular discipline or in all disciplines, as well as a general structure of the discipline in question. In this study, the development of agricultural and related published articles in WOS and Scopus database within five years is explained by bibliometric analysis. In this context, the results of the surveys on the subject of agriculture in WOS and Scopus were limited to five years. The obtained data were transferred to Excel and their graphics were prepared. In addition, data were analyzed in Bibexcel program for analyzing the number of authors of multi-author articles of this data. The findings were evaluated and evaluations were made about publications published in the literature related to agriculture within five years.

Similarly the average number of pages per paper citations per paper was 11.8 and 10.9 respectively. The highest authorship productivity was nine.

An Analytical Study on Rating of Agricultural Research Publications

International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology IJRASET, 2020

Ranking of academic and research journals are widely used in academic circles to assess the quality and impact of journals and the distribution of scientific publications have hyperbolic form. The Impact factor, Eigen factor, SCImago journal ranking, h-index are some of the evaluation tools to assess the impact and quality of journals. An academic or research journal's scoring is established over time through many other factors including citations. Over the years, many ranking systems for journals have evolved, incorporating a variety of methodologies and factors, including frequency of citation, prominence of author, etc. To estimate and evaluate the scientific results published by a scientist or quality of a journal basing on their impact factor is facilitated by the citations number of corresponding author and also journals. This approach obviously is based on a naive idea that the number of citations tells us something essential about scientific value of cited publication. Though India has published a number of journals in various branches of knowledge, most of Indian journals do not have good impact factors. In this context, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) [14] of India has started rating journals published in India and abroad based on certain criteria to assess the quality and impact of the journals. It is the sole Academy that caters to professionals in the field of agriculture in India and also insisted that transparency in the evaluation process would instil greater confidence amongst professionals in the agricultural community [2]. Knowing the impact or importance of the journal will help in decision makings about whether an author will choose to submit an article to that chosen journal as it can capture a scholar's research career. A researcher's publication data often reflects his/her research interests and their social relations. Libraries and librarians also use journal rankings to make decisions about collection development [15]. This paper will analyse what are all the criteria adopted for publication of a scientific paper in agriculture and allied sciences and sources of publications and also present status of the quality of different journals.
