Mathematics Teachers’ Beliefs About Effective Teacher (original) (raw)
Abstract
This study was conducted with the purpose of determining secondary mathematics teachers’ beliefs and conceptions about effective teacher. Case study is preferred as research method. The study was carried out during 2007-2008 school year fall term with ten mathematics teachers working in a secondary school in the city center of Trabzon province and each participant was interviewed for about 60 minutes. An interview form developed by the researchers and comprised of open-ended and scenario-type questions were used as the data collecting tool. The data was analyzed descriptively using the Epistemological Reflection Model of Magolda. As a result of the study, besides having a number of strict ideas about mathematics instruction, they were found to have views compatible with the philosophical roots of the most recently implemented mathematics curriculum and to be open to innovations. Finally, some recommendations were made based on the results of this study.
