FUZZY LOGIC IN PROCESS SAFETY MODELING OF CHEMICAL PROCESS
Chemical Process Plant as a complex system requires good scientific knowledge on different issues including Process Safety Analysis (PSA). Fuzzy logic is the collective name for “Fuzzy set analysis” and “Possibility theory”, able to use random or approximate data in the Process Safety Analysis. This paper explains the impact of fuzzy set theory for basic tools used in Process Safety Analysis. It also discusses the sources and types of uncertainties encountered in PSA and also methods to deal with them. There are different methods to improve the quality of the PSA, for example sensitivity analysis, expert systems, statistics and fuzzy logic.Fuzzy logic is one of the promising methods for reliability assessment. The traditional PSA tools like Fault Tree analysis (FTA) and Event Tree (ET) were trimmed and free of uncertainty by the application of Fuzzy logic. Now these tools provide correct process risk level and safety assurance.
EMERGING APPLICATIONS OF FUZZY LOGIC IN CHEMICAL PROCESS SYSTEMS
Fuzzy logic is a modeling method intended to formalize a mathematical approach to deal with these complex or ill-defined systems and is, therefore, a relatively new mathematical paradigm. Its basis is a consideration of overlapping sets and the definition of operators to manipulate these sets. According to Zadeh and Mamdani, fuzzy logic could be used to develop operational automatic control systems. The application of fuzzy logic techniques has been increasing rapidly in the last few years. Fuzzy logic is used in target tracking, pattern recognition, robotics, power systems, controller design, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, vehicular technology, economy management and decision making, aerospace applications, communications and networking, electronic engineering, and civil engineering. Chemical engineering has employed fuzzy logic in the detection of chemical agents as well as gas recognition. It has also been applied to processes control, batch distillation column, separation process, and kinetics. In this paper, we discuss how the development of intelligent systems can be done. Also, how the fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic can be used to develop knowledge – based expert systems in Chemical Engineering. KEYWORDS Fuzzy logic, Chemical process
Potential applications of fuzzy sets in industrial safety engineering
Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 1986
This paper discusses potential applications of fuzzy set theory to risk analysis in the area of industrial safety engineering. Vagueness and imprecision in mathematical quantification of risk are equated with fuzziness rather than randomness. The concept of risk evaluation, using linguistic representation of the likelihood of the occurrence of a hazardous event, exposure, and possible consequences of that event, is proposed. The approximate reasoning technique based on fuzzy logic is used to derive fuzzy values of risk.
A weighted fuzzy Petri-net based approach for security risk assessment in the chemical industry
Chemical Engineering Science, 2017
h i g h l i g h t s A weighted fuzzy Petri-net (WFPN) based security risk assessment approach is proposed in this paper. This approach can model the importance of risk factors and their different relationships. The analysis method of Petri-nets can be used to perform the security risk assessment. Two WFPN models of security risk assessment are established according to different relationships between the factors. A matrix operation based security risk inference method is developed.
Applications of fuzzy sets in industrial engineering: a topical classification
Fuzzy Applications in Industrial …, 2006
A rational approach toward decision-making should take into account human subjectivity, rather than employing only objective probability measures. This attitude towards the uncertainty of human behavior led to the study of a relatively new decision analysis field: Fuzzy decision-making. Fuzzy systems are suitable for uncertain or approximate reasoning, especially for the system with a mathematical model that is difficult to derive. Fuzzy logic allows decision-making with estimated values under incomplete or uncertain information. A major contribution of fuzzy set theory is its capability of representing vague data. Fuzzy set theory has been used to model systems that are hard to define precisely. As a methodology, fuzzy set theory incorporates imprecision and subjectivity into the model formulation and solution process. Fuzzy set theory represents an attractive tool to aid research in industrial engineering (IE) when the dynamics of the decision environment limit the specification of model objectives, constraints and the precise measurement of model parameters. This chapter provides a survey of the applications of fuzzy set theory in IE.
Safety Assessment of Process Systems using Fuzzy Extended Bow Tie (FEBT) Model
Chemical engineering transactions, 2019
Risk analysis in process systems is very important to design effective strategies for preventing and mitigating potential major accidents. Although conventional techniques as Bow-tie (BT) have widely been used in risk assessment of process systems, they fall short in effectively modelling epistemic uncertainty which is prevailing in risk assessment of process systems. The present study is aimed at alleviating this shortcoming by incorporating fuzzy set theory into BT, developing a so-called fuzzy extended Bow tie (FEBT) model. FEBT, compared with previous fuzzy BT methods, uses the intuitionistic fuzzy numbers and thus provides a more accurate cause - consequence model of accident scenarios. A natural gas transmission network is used to demonstrate the application of FEBT.
Application of Fuzzy Logic Approach to Consequence Modeling in Process Industries
In this paper, a general framework for deal with uncertainties in each stage of consequence modeling is presented. In the first part of the framework, the sources of uncertainty are identified and confirmed by sensitivity analysis for the source term, dispersion, physical effects and consequence analysis. While the second part comprises an application of the fuzzy logic system to each step of the consequence modeling. The proposed procedure is verified by the case study for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) release on water. The results in terms of hazard zones are compared with calculations obtained using the Monte Carlo method and with experimental data. The fuzzy logic approach provides less uncertain and more precise results in comparison to the deterministic approach.

Assets failure is widely considered as one of the main causes of major accidents in chemical industries such as fires, explosions, and toxic gas releases. Assets criticality analysis is vital to prevent such accidents. Risk-based maintenance (RBM) is among the most advanced comprehensive risk assessment methodologies for the criticality analysis of assets. The present study applies both traditional RBM and Fuzzy RBM(FRBM) methods for the risk analysis of petrochemical assets failure. Four consequence factors comprising operational impact, operational flexibility, maintenance cost, and impact on safety and environment are considered for the risk evaluation of assets failure. Moreover, frequency and risk factor scales are localized for both traditional RBM and Fuzzy RBM methods using an expert panel. The results of the case study show suitability of the FRBM model. Fuzzy numbers show that out of 107 assets, 10 are at the semi-critical level, and the remaining 97 are at the non-critical level. The highest fuzzy risk numbers were obtained for two blowers, where the assets failure value was 99.145. The criticality evaluation results show that the plant in the case study is at the semi-critical level. Given this, it is recommended that risk managers of the plant should customize and prioritise their maintenance planning according to the FRBM value for each asset failure. To this end, maintenance-related recommendations are offered to facilitate and assist decision-makers.
Neuro-Fuzzy Modelling in Petrochemical Industry
1999
In the last few years, problems concerning with both air pollution and quality of products have gained a particular attention in industrial companies. A great interest in new technologies for the process of manufacturing optimisation and quality control has raised. Mathematical models for quality control are highly nonlinear and need very expensive and sophisticated instruments. Soft-Computing, an innovative approach for constructing computationally intelligent systems, has just come into the limelight. The quintessence of designing intelligent systems of this kind is Neuro-Fuzzy computing. In this paper a Neuro-Fuzzy prediction model for the quality control of benzene is proposed.

Risk assessment is an important task in many areas of human activity: economic, technical, ecological etc. Preliminary data adequacy in risk assessments is carried out on the basis of statistical methods and experts’ evaluation on potential losses and probabilities of the event. But in many cases, risk assessment must be carried out under the conditions of lack of initial information or uncertainty of information. For that reason, special risk assessment approaches (methods) are necessary. One of them is the usage of fuzzy logic approach. In this paper, fuzzy logic approach is used to manage this uncertainty in information concerning accidental releases of toxic chemicals at chemical plants. This approach can be used by plant risk advisers in Latvia to make right decisions in the situations where chemical releases can harm not only the environment but also human health.
