Africa Journal of Management, 2017

This study investigated the self-employability initiatives of disabled university students by presenting a model that would allow the concept to be explained and used easily as a framework for working with students to develop their selfemployment careers. A cross-sectional survey with a quantitative method constituted the study's research design. A sample size of 254 university students was determined using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size selection model. Data were analyzed using demographic statistics, correlation analysis and the structural equation model (SEM). The results revealed that entrepreneurship education, action mechanisms and university role have a positive influence on the self-employability initiatives of disabled students. The results also indicated that action mechanisms mediate the relationship between entrepreneurship education and the self-employability initiatives of the disabled students in this study. Universities that provide enabling premises for disabled students, foster the development of networks and provide them access to coaches, mentors and research results will trigger the self-employability initiative of disabled students. This study indicates a number of implications for tertiary institutions and policymakers, particularly that entrepreneurship education and the role the university plays make significant contributions to the self-employability initiative of disabled students. Policymakers need to design entrepreneurship curricula that will be appreciated by students with disabilities.

F1000Research, 2022

Background: There is a significant gap in employment between people with and without disabilities, despite the importance of work in achieving their independence, autonomy, and integration into society. There are several reasons that cause this gap to exist, such as: people with disabilities feel less prepared, there is a stigma or discrimination to hire people with disabilities and the incompatibility of schedules due to medical issues, among others. That is why entrepreneurship emerges as a good option for the integration of people with disabilities in our society, improves their confidence and promotes some of the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the 2030 Agenda. According to existing literature, people with disabilities have certain virtues such as resilience and motivation that favor entrepreneurship. Thus, the purpose of this study is to provide new insights into the variables that determine the entrepreneurial intention of people with disabilities. Methods: In order to respond to this objective, an online questionnaire was given to people with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 65 years, residing in diverse regions of Spain. To analyze the results, this study uses Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) in a sample of 235 people with disabilities in Spain using as a framework Krueger´s improved model, adding resilience as a new variable. Results: The results reflect the importance of resilience, the subjective norm, and perceived collective efficacy in the entrepreneurial processes of people with disabilities. The road to entrepreneurship with impairments: A challenges-adaptive mechanisms-results model for disabled entrepreneurs

International Small Business Journal: Researching Entrepreneurship, 2019

This article explores how different challenges potentially inspire those deemed impaired to engage with entrepreneurship and how they overcome such challenges through different adaptive mechanisms. Taking an interpretive perspective, we undertook semi-structured interviews with 13 entrepreneurs with impairments, providing an understanding of the relationship between challenges and the adaptive mechanisms that led to business and personal attainments. Based on our empirical findings, we propose a new challenges-adaptive mechanisms-results (CARE) model contributing to the literature on disabled entrepreneurship among those with impairments and also provide insights into the entrepreneurial endeavours of the disabled population.

Entrepreneurship for People With Disabilities: From Skills to Social Value

Frontiers in Psychology, 2021

Entrepreneurship has undoubted social value as it contributes to socioeconomic development of the context where entrepreneurship takes place. When the entrepreneurial activity is undertaken among especially vulnerable groups in the labor market, the multiplying effect of this value is made explicit in society, in general, and in the collective of people with disabilities (PWDs), in particular. The objective of this research study is to explore under which conditions this happens through the analysis not only of the relationship between the competencies that PWDs attribute to themselves and their development of the entrepreneurial activity but also of that between entrepreneurship and certain conditions that potentially create value by increasing the autonomy among this collective. A quantitative methodology based on the analysis of the survey carried out on a sample of 224 entrepreneurs with physical, sensory, or organic disabilities throughout Spain has been used. According to the results, entrepreneurs with disabilities (EWDs) have a higher self-evaluation competency. Furthermore, significant results concerning the link between the form of autonomous cohabitation of this collective and entrepreneurship have been obtained.
