Conecting infrastructure and urbanism

2012

Since the early beginning, the development and expansion of the cities have always been supported by infrastructure. However the correlation between the conception of the infrastructural networks and the urbanization process remains underestimated in the history of urbanism and planning. Thus, this ongoing research assesses the implication of this correlation in a specific context such as Lisbon and its Belt Railway. The aim is to provide an interpretative reading of the morphogenesis of the Lisbon Belt Railway landscape and territory through the overlapping of the infrastructural strata and the urbanization process from the mid 19 century until the fist decade of the 21 century. Using only official documents from various archives and based on a rigorous and precise method (GIS), a succession of iconographic readings, mainly from cartographies, of the city of Lisbon is composed in six consecutive periods: 1865, 1914, 1949, 1971, 1993 and 2009.

Railways in the Urban Context an architectural discourse

Railway and city have coexisted for more then 150 years. The realization of railroads in the 19th century can be seen as an important contribution to the development of the city. But during the making of railroads there was too little consideration for the overall picture of the city. The result is that today the railway is entangled with the city while its role has drastically changed. Currently the railway, although indispensable, is often considered as an obstacle, a limitation for city planning. This leads to the following research questions. What is the relationship between the construction of the city and the realization of the railway? Which transformations does the city have to deal with and what does the railway and its buildings have to do with it? And finally, what is the role of architecture in the realization of railway infrastructures in the city? The search for answers to those questions is the core of this research. The area of interest is the Netherlands with particular attention to the Randstad, where the railway is an important part of the traffic network. An important conclusion is that architecture should play a more substantial role in the future transformations of railroads in the (Randstad) city.

Urban Infrastructure

The Oxford Handbook of Later Medieval Archaeology, 2018

The infrastructure of the medieval city comprised roads, bridges, waterways, and their associated structures. This chapter argues that archaeology, in conjunction with the study of historical and pictorial evidence, can shed important insights into the construction, modification, and development of streets, waterfronts, rivers, bridges, and perceptions of hygiene in the medieval city. The importance of infrastructure to transport and urban ports, markets, and civic pride is reflected in the contemporary historical records. Through the archaeology of urban infrastructure it is possible to show they are more than a backdrop to the urban environment and formed an integral part of the active expression of daily life and a statement of civic pride.

La Expresión Gráfica en Los Proyectos De Ordenación Urbana. Antecedentes Históricos y Una Apuesta De Normalización

EGA. Revista de expresión gráfica arquitectónica, 2012

This article analyses graphic expression as a tool for the transmission of the information contained in urban planning instruments and aims to open a line of research on its standardisation. To this end, this work identifies some of the tools of graphic expression used in two milestone events in the history of urban planning: the Spanish expansion plans for population centres in the mid-19 th century and the Modern Movement of the first third of the 20 th century. The article exemplifies how these proposals included criteria for the possible standardisation of graphic expression in urban planning. As a way of conclusion, the article presents an example of a recent line of research advocating for the standardisation of graphics and colour use in urban planning, based on an inductive study.
