Abstract

The name "Pirai da Serra" was given to a specific sector in the region of Campos Gerais, Parana State, located in the dip slope of the "Escarpa Devoniana" (Devonian Scarp) and comprising segments of the municipalities of Castro, Pirai do Sul and Tibagi. This area has a rich natural heritage, especially with regard to geological elements. Its geodiversity includes outcrops of Iapo, Furnas and Ponta Grossa formations, intrusions related to the Serra Geral Formation, and soils related to these rocks. Escarpments, canyonss, waterfalls and several features typical of a ruiniform relief complete a unique setting. Eighteen of the more than thirty subdivisions of the geodiversity values gathered on the 2004 masterwork of Murray Gray were identified in the region of the Pirai da Serra, with special emphasis on cultural, scientific, aesthetic and functional values. Identification and classification of the values of geodiversity aim to subsidize the implementation of future geoconservation actions in this area.
