Characterization of fuel oil atomizers at industrial scale
2010
Nowadays heavy fuel oils represent a significant source of energy available for different applications, either for processes or for power generation. The combustion performance for this type of material considering efficiency, pollutant emissions, etc. is very much influenced by the atomization process and by the oxidant used in combustion. Oxy-combustion can provide advantages with heavy fuels oils such as reducing the vaporization time, as well as reducing the environmental impact, improving the operational economy in terms of reduced fuel consumption or increasing the productivity due to more efficient heat transfer particularly for processes such as glass and steel making. This paper reports the methodology and main aspects considered to evaluate and optimize the design of an air assisted atomizer for industrial scale, from the operational conditions set up and spray characterization measurements reliability, to the impact for the particular application on oxy-combustion. To car...
Quantitative and Qualitative Comparison of Internally Mixed Twin-Fluid Atomizers
Various designs of the internally twin-fluid atomizers have been invented during past few decades. Each of these atomizers was examined and optimized for given application, mostly for the combustion of highly viscous liquid fuels such as heavy and waste oils. The aim of this paper is to compare atomization characteristics of three internally mixed atomizers operated at low gas-to-liquid ratios (GLRs) and with low atomization pressures. Several methods are used to link the internal two-phase flow with the structure of the discharged liquid and with developed spray. Internal two-phase flow pattern was estimated on the basis of a theoretical approach. The spray was examined using a Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Unlike the PDA, the PIV method enables us to measure the velocity of non-spherical shapes. Due to this fact, it was possible to measure velocity of the liquid fragments in the primary breakup region. Images, obtained by the PIV system, were...

This paper deals with an experimental study of the breakup characteristics of water emanating from pressure-swirl hydraulic injector nozzles. The experiments were conducted using two nozzles with different orifice diameters 0.3mm and 0.5mm and injection pressures (0.3-4MPa) which corresponds to Rep = 7,000-26000. The effects of Reynolds number on the spray angle and other atomization characteristics were studied. Three laser diagnostic techniques were utilized: Shadowgraph, PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), and PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Anemometry) for a complete study of the atomization process. The comparison among the three techniques compared well with each other. Limitations of these techniques in different flow regimes related to the breakup are provided. Results indicate that velocity exhibits a logarithmic decay axially. The diameter decreases away from the nozzle, however, at some distance, the droplets begin to coalesce to make the effective diameter larger. These effec...
