AELTE 2022 The 1st International Conference on “21st Century Challenges in ELT”, 2022

Varying media types have always been an essential part of the EFL classroom periphery as they present the authentic materials in the teaching sessions. These materials aid the students to become acquainted with the real-life circumstances and make the instruction of English more authentic. Moreover, in the communicative language instruction, authentic teaching is expected to occur since the use of authentic objects and materials in the classrooms is boosted. Therefore, the EFL instructors are required to make use of a number of media components in their classrooms. Also, with the arrival of notable learner focused approaches, EFL instructors are more stimulated to engage their students in their own acquisition of knowledge or skills through study and experience. They guide their students to become aware of the link between school learning and their lives and experiences. They improve their students' objective analysis and evaluation processes and their ability to solve problems in an effective and timely manner without any impediments. This may be fulfilled with the use of media to improve their language skills. From this point of view, this study aims at providing the most frequently preferred contents of Media and Communication elective course to suggest topics for Media and Communication elective course for ELT departments in education faculties. In order to achieve this particular aim, this research intends to investigate relevant literature on Media and Communication. Key words: ELT Departments, Teacher Education, Media and Communication

ELT Students' Perceptions and Attitudes about the Online Listening Courses During the Covid-19 Period

Journal of Modern Research in English Language Studies, 2023

The outbreak of Covid-19 changed many aspects of people's lives all over the world, including the type of education and learning/teaching styles. Transferring from face-to-face education to distance education brought some difficulties and challenges for both teachers and students. Among those observed challenges and problems, one of the most important ones was related to distance listening courses at an ELT department of a state university in Turkey. In the literature, no related or similar studies to discover the perceptions and attitudes of ELT students in the Turkish context about online listening courses were found. Therefore, this research sought to discover the 2 nd grade ELT students' perceptions about the distance listening courses carried out throughout the Covid-19 period focusing on whether students had encountered any challenges. To collect data, a 30-item Likert-type questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used. Randomly selected students (12) and listening course teachers (4) were interviewed to reinforce the findings of the study. Findings put forward that a great majority of the participants and instructors had negative perceptions and attitudes about online listening courses. The results of this research will be of benefit to university instructors and syllabus designers in taking future urgent decisions and measures regarding the implementation of distance learning and teaching programs for students from different backgrounds.

Good Vibes Only: Learning English at a Distance Within Pandemic Pedagogy

Handbook of Research on Emerging Pedagogies for the Future of Education: Trauma-Informed, Care, and Pandemic Pedagogy, 2021

We live in a period when schools are involuntarily closed; human life gradually slowed down and came to a halt due to a pandemic, but distance education is already underway. While some higher education institutions have been struggling to meet distance education, the ones that have currently provided distance education in many parts of the world continued to maintain their existing educational systems in the time of the pandemic. In this connection, the central objective of this paper is to explore how online solutions and attempts have been defined under the term of “emergency remote education” since the first outbreak of the pandemic and how pandemic pedagogy during COVID-19 has contributed to emergency remote education and online education both in the world and specifically in Turkey. As there has been a gradual shift in higher education lately, this chapter is a response to educational crisis specifically for English teaching and learning at a distance from a positive perspective.
