Evaluating urban residents’ attitudes towards tourism development in Belgrade (Serbia)

Current Issues in Tourism, 2018

This study empirically examines the relationships among residents' place image, various domains of tourism impacts, and residents' support for tourism development in an Eastern European city, as well as the role of residents' socio-demographic characteristics and place attachment. The direct, indirect, and moderating effects were investigated using structural equation modelling and the method suggested by Hayes and Preacher [2010. Estimating and testing indirect effects in simple mediation models when the constituent paths are nonlinear. Multivariate Behavioral Research, 45, 627-660]. The findings show that none of the tourism impacts mediate the relationship between place image and residents' support for tourism development. Moreover, with respect to Belgrade, perceived economic impacts have the strongest effect on residents' support, followed by perceived socio-cultural impacts. By assessing the respective contribution of the three tourism impacts simultaneously, the results highlight the weight residents assign to a city's peculiarities, thus illustrating contextual influences such as postcommunist and centrally planned economy legacies.

An empirical structural model of tourists and places: Progressing involvement and place attachment into tourism

Tourism Management, 2008

Research which examines the relationship between involvement and place attachment has started to emerge in the leisure literature and this paper reports the findings of a study, which applied these constructs within a tourism context. A survey was conducted with tourists in five South Australian tourism regions that measured respondents' attitudes towards tourism experiences in South Australia. Involvement was conceptualised as a multidimensional construct consisting of the dimensions of attraction, centrality to lifestyle, self expression and food & wine. Place attachment was also conceptualised as a multidimensional construct of place dependence and place identity. The study developed and tested a structural model that was found to reliably and validly measure predictive relationships between the constructs of involvement and place attachment. The findings indicated that the combined use of involvement and place attachment is applicable in tourism. The implications for destination management are discussed. r

Residents’ sense of place, involvement, attitude, and support for tourism: a case study of Daming Palace, a Cultural World Heritage Site

Asian Geographer

ABSTRACT This paper intended to examine how local residents’ senses of place of tourism site and involvement in tourism could influence their attitude toward tourism, which eventually affected their support for tourism development. A questionnaire survey was conducted at eight neighborhoods surrounding Daming Palace Heritage Park, a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the relations among these variables. Results indicated that positive attitude of residents toward tourism positively affected their support for tourism development but negative attitude negatively affected their support. Whilst sense of place influenced both positive and negative attitudes, involvement influenced only the positive attitude. The findings may provide reference for the sustainable development of cultural tourism and heritage conservation of Cultural World Heritage Sites.

Testing the Dimensionality of Place Attachment and its Relationships with Place Satisfaction and Pro-Environmental Behaviours: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach. Tourism Management, 36, 552-566.

"Drawing on literature from environmental psychology, the present study examined place attachment as a second order factor and investigated its relationships with place satisfaction and visitors’ low and high effort pro-environmental behavioural intentions. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were used to test a model using a sample of 452 visitors at the Dandenong Ranges National Park, in Australia. Results supported the four-dimensional second order factor of place attachment and indicated (a) positive and significant effects of place attachment on both low and high effort pro-environmental behavioural intentions of park visitors, (b) a significant and positive influence of place attachment on place satisfaction, (c) a significant and positive effect of place satisfaction on low effort pro-environmental behavioural intentions, and (d) a negative and significant influence of place satisfaction on high effort pro-environmental behavioural intentions. The main theoretical contribution relates to the inclusion of the four dimensions of place attachment in a single model. Findings are discussed with respect to their applied and theoretical relevance. Key words: Place attachment; place satisfaction; low effort and high effort pro-environmental behavioural intentions; first and second order factor; national parks "

A structural equation model of residents' attitudes for tourism development

This study tests the structural equation model between residents' perceived tourism impacts and attitudes toward host community. The model consisted of five latent constructs and nine path hypotheses and is based upon 732 mailback questionnaires returned by residents of Cheju Island, Korea, a major domestic tourism destination. It was found that residents' 'community satisfaction' was closely related to 'perceived positive' and 'perceived negative' tourism impacts. These constructs were directly causing 'attitudes toward additional tourism development'. But the hypothesized path relationships between 'personal benefits from tourism development' and the constructs of 'perceived negative tourism impacts' and 'overall community satisfaction' were rejected. In conclusion, community satisfaction was influenced by perception of tourism impacts, and may be useful in planning for additional tourism development. r

Relation between Residents' Attitudes and their Support for Tourism Development

International Journal of Psychosocial Rehabilitation, 2020

Tourism industry has grown by unprecedented levels across the globe. It was initially considered as a solution to economic vagaries, providing local income and employment. Studies later revealed that tourism was not without ill-effects, and that uncontrolled tourism development can have strong implications on the sustainability of tourism destinations. Attitude of local community began to be considered as very important in deciding future development of tourism in destinations. The present study attempts to identify the local community residents' community attachment, concern and ecocentric values and to identify its effect on their support for tourism development. A regression model was formulated and tested to find that residents' community attachment and ecocentric values have positive effect, and community concern have negative effect on tourism development. The regression model was found to be statistically significant.

Modeling the Relationship between Sense of Place, Social Capital and Tourism Support

Iranian journal of management studies, 2018

The success of tourism development heavily depends on residents' support. Broader literature suggests sense of place and social capital are important precedents of residents' attitudes and behavior. However, limited attention has been paid to this topic in tourism, especially in Iran. Therefore, the aim of this research is to examin e the relationship between sense of place, social capital and residents' attitudes toward tourism support. Data were collected from residents in the historic city of Shiraz, one of the main tourist destinations in Iran. A survey method based on a structured questionnaire was applied. Data analysis was conducted using a Structural Equation Modelling two-step approach. Results from 386 questionnaires indicated a positive significant relationship between sense of place and social capital, and sense of place and tourism support. However, social capital did not mediate the relationship between sense of place and tourism support. The research findings suggest that it is important for urban planners to take measures to maintain and improve the residents' place sense in order to gain their support for tourism. Further study is required to investigate the effect of social capital on residents ' attitude towards support for tourism development.

RESIDENTS' ATTITUDES TOWARD TOURISM DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY OF THE FEDERATION OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Društvena istrazivanja, 2019

This research focuses on analyzing residents' perception and attitude toward tourism development in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FB&H). For the purpose of this research, the existing models on residents' perception and attitudes were modified and a new theoretical model of six constructs was tested applying Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The dimensions of the model, perception of tourism management, perception of economic, social and environmental impacts, residents' satisfaction, support for further tourism development, were formed as latent variables, accompanied with a set of three or four consonant questions. The model suggests that the support for tourism development is indirectly stipulated by the perception of tourism management, and by economic, social and environmental impacts. Analyses have shown that 6 out of the 7 suggested hypotheses have been confirmed. The findings indicate that the residents of the FB&H strongly support tourism development as they perceive it brings more positive impacts, which are greater than the actual governmental investment into the sector.

Residents’ Attitude toward Tourism Development: A Sociocultural Perspective

Sustainability, 2017

Host population support for tourism development has attracted the attention of researchers in tourism studies. Given the importance of understanding local community support for tourism development, limitations in understanding their priority and lack of a socio-cultural model of support for tourism, this study attempted to model locals' support for tourism development based on socio-cultural factors in Malaysian Homestay program. Using extensive literature review, a tourism support model was proposed including several hypothesized paths. The proposed socio-cultural research framework predicted the impact of Islamic religiosity, locals' knowledge about tourism, intrinsic motivation factors and community attachment on locals support for tourism development through mediating variables of perceived socio-cultural benefits and costs in Malaysian Homestays. , the model and paths were tested using structural equation modelling and partial least square algorithm (PLS-SEM) with the aid of SmartPLS software. Findings reveal that locals' support for tourism development in Homestay program is a function of perceived socio-cultural benefits and costs perceived by local community and four independent variables of Islamic religiosity, knowledge about tourism, intrinsic motivations, and community attachment.
