RAIITH: Institutional Repository at IIT Hyderabad and its impact in scientific community
2017
The digital content produced now a days is enormous and in this connection libraries role at various level is crucial. Higher educational institutions generate and make available a quantum of digital academic and scholarly content. The crossover from print to electronic databases in the libraries is playing prominent role to collect, archive, maintain and publish the content. In this context, the establishment of institutional repository is an important step towards enhancing the visibility of the educational institute across the globe. Research Archive of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (RAIITH) is built and managed by using open source software (Eprints). Also it discusses about the methods used to collect, collate and publish scholarly content in RAIITH. The challenges come across during the implementation and the testing phase were well addressed. In addition, to complement the traditional citation-based metrics, the latest metric tool viz. Altmetric is structured for ...
Institutional Repository at Central Library IIT Kharagpur: An Overview
An institutional repository is an online resource for the storing in digital form of academic materials, such as thesis, dissertations and research articles, on behalf of a university or other institution. This paper focuses on the requirements, functions and use of digital preservation in an institutional repository context. The paper highlights on various feature and importance of both Institutional Digital Repository and Open Source Digital Library Software that is DSpace. The Central Library IIT, Kharagpur uses open sources digital library software namely DSpace. The IDR of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) collects preserves and makes available in digital format of the scholarly output of IIT Kharagpur community. Its interface provides for an easy self-archiving by faculty, and organizes the documents in logical, easily retrieved fashion.

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is serving through eleven campuses spread across eight countries in three continents. It has a network of eleven libraries, although small in size, in five developing courtiers in three regions (South Asia, East Africa, and Europe). The university has recently implemented an Institutional Repository (IR) system to show-case the intellectual and scholarly output of the university. The selection of this system was done after a thorough study of available platforms, and in line with AKU vision and mission. The stakeholders were involved in decision making. After a careful evaluation of the teams involved, Digital Commons was selected as the AKU’s IR. Digital Commons is a suite of tools and services that enable institutions to manage, display, and publish scholarship to the web in a highly visible online showcase. Besides having all features of a traditional IR, it also offers professional-grade publishing tools with a peer-review workflow. So the instituti...
Institutional Repositories: The Prospects and Challenges in Indian Digital Library Environment
2012
The information evolution leads to the flood of publication. User needs are also rapidly growing. They have to read more journals, require more information but the prices have increased faster than library budget. So to cope up the situation and meet the user requirement the institutional repositories has been emerged. In the age of ICT, the concept of institutional repository has arisen, which have become very essential mode of accessing and sharing the information. Information is always considered the root cause for the development of any society/community. Intuitional Repositories are digital collections of the outputs created within a university or research institution. This paper discussed about growth of IR in India and also global scenario of IRs. This paper is a consideration of some of the important aspects related with IRs. It also explores the trends at global and national level of IR. The present paper also discusses about some important software, which is being used by ...
Institutional Repository Software and their Use by the National Institutions of India: A Survey
Recent changes in ICT have opened new ways of information creation, organisation, storage, and dissemination for scholarly communication. The institutional repositories act as central digital archive to make research and intellectual outcomes of the institutions available online to their needy ones. The paper discusses the concept, need, pros and cons related to institutional repositories. Besides this, paper also discusses the survey results based on its framed objectives and concluded that DSpace & EPrints are most prevalent software for the purpose.
Institutional repositories are essential research infrastructures for research ‐based universities. A properly dimensioned institutional repository has the potential to increase research impact and enhance the visibility of an institution through its scholarly outputs. The aim of the study reported in this paper was to design and develop a web‐based digital repository for scholarly communications using NM‐AIST as a case study. The system was developed using open source software. Findings obtained from system validation tests show that the system is a viable solution to the major challenges encountered in the management and sharing of scholarly information at the institution.
Cross-border implementation of Institutional Repository: A case of Aga Khan University
2015
Institutions globally have increasingly embraced Institutional Repositories (IRs) to collect, showcase, archive, and preserve their intellectual and scholarly output. Many benefits are gained from implementation of the platform including: the institution’s visibility, status and reputation is increased; authors get wider public access and visibility thus more citations for their work; long-term preservation of research; and the library benefits from its new role in information creation and distribution thus the opportunity to re-assert its importance in the face of declining user dependence on libraries for simple access to information (Sharif 2013). Despite the high uptake of IRs to manage institutions’ digital resources more effectively, little has been written on the experience of cross-border implementation. This paper seeks to fill this gap by presenting unique lessons learnt from the implementation of Digital Commons (DC), a proprietary hosted institutional repository platform...
Institutional repositories for knowledge management in academic and research Institutions
Information Retrieval Systems (IRS) provide a simple, Webbased mechanism to researchers to deposit ('self-archive') and access their research publications. There are many world renowned open source IR softwares available such as EPrints, DSpace, FEDORA, ARNO, i-TOR, CDSWare etc. Each of this software has a host of features, unique facilities and excellent capabilities, which the users could explore and experiment upon. In this paper we emphasize the need for deploying interoperable open access IRs, and share our experience in creating a state-of-art scholarly Institutional Repository using the DSpace software. The system development and administration illustrated in this paper is on Windows environment as we have observed that a large majority of the library professionals in India are more familiar and comfortable with the Microsoft operating system, though strictly speaking, an open source operating environment for an open source IR software would have been more desirable. The method of developing the IR, which include the institutional open access policies, the installation, configuration and customization of the software along with the related workflow operations such as defining the communities and collections, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets are also illustrated.
The Institutional Repositories: An Alternative Model for Scholarly Publishing
2004
Indian University Libraries are constantly grappling with the issue of cost inflation of library resources (cost of library materials have out spaced cost of living) coupled with resource explosion. Some alternate solutions may have emerged in form of rationalization of periodicals, resource sharing, site licences and now consortia. Importances of these concerns have been clearly defined in the main objectives of the INFLIBNET. However, the fundamental problem remains. The paper highlights how by using the Internet / Intranet revolution, this problem can be minimized. The focus of the paper is on developing Institutional Repositories -one of the prime issues that is of utmost importance keeping in view multifaceted factors (information explosion; cost inflation and ICT) that have had immense impact on the existing research cycle. The issues concerning public / open access to scholarly articles in form of Institutional Repositories (IR) are also discussed here in this paper.
AN OVERVIEW OF AN INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY
The emergence of ICT in the field of library and information science has changed the face of today’s libraries. In the technology driven era the services offered by a library and the responsibilities of the librarian have been changed tremendously. The current study attempts to depict the overview of an Institution Repository. The chief objective of the study is to find out different issues, challenges and contents of an Institutional Repository. The study also gives an idea about Indian institutional repository scenario. The study suggests that definite policies should be made before building up an institutional repository in terms intellectual property rights.
