The Sociolinguistic Situation of a Tigwahanon Speech Community

The study examined the sociolinguistic situation of a Tigwahanon indigenous community in Bukidnon regarding its language use, attitudes, and documentation. It also identified the recommendations to perpetuate their language. The study employed a qualitative design, particularly the linguistic ethnographic method. Results showed that the Tigwahanon language was limitedly used in several social domains, and it was poorly documented. However, all participants had positive attitudes toward their language despite their viewpoints that social discrimination and stigma associated with speaking the language; bilingual environment; Cebuano as the mother tongue in school; and migration were obstacles that may affect promoting their language. Yet they wished their language to be promoted through education, raising awareness, language documentation, using modern technology, empowering, and pursuing higher education. The aim of this study is to describe the form, the socio-cultural context, and the social meaning of the Javanese language varieties. In this research, the researchers used descriptive qualitative research with case study design. The data of this research were obtained from the people utterances. Observation, interview, and documentation were used to collect the data. There were 30 participants involved in this research. The instruments of this research were an audio recording, a questionnaire, and note. Triangulation was applied to measure the validity of data. The researchers used content analysis for peeling utterances in text form. For analyzing the data, the researchers used An Interactive Model of Analysis. The results of this study revealed that 40 words differ from the basic vocabulary. The context of the Javanese language varieties is particular context and general context based on the participant, setting, topic, and the function. There are four social meaning such as group identity, solidarity, politeness, and pride. The participants in this study were relatively small. Conducting similar studies with more participants involved would be helpful. Moreover, it would be insightful to examine the use of Javanese language varieties among people around Java.

The Language Situation in Pangandaran Village

This research is a preliminary study. It describes the language situation in Pangandaran village based on five domains which are family, education, government, religion, and employment/trade. The result of the research shows that the people in Pangandaran village are a multilingual society with two dominant ethnics that are Sundanese and Javanese. The languages used are Sundanese, Javanese, Indonesian, & English. The community seems to still maintain their vernacular languages (Sundanese & Javanese). They are especially used in family and to show solidarity. Furthermore, religion domain still uses their majority vernacular language, Sundanese. Indonesian is used in formal situation such as education and trade. Pangandaran village is a tourist area, so Indonesian and English are mostly used to talk with strangers.

Social and Speech Community of Central Java Indonesia

This paper aims at discussing the relationship between social community and speech community of Java specifically social and speech community observed of Central Java Indonesia. Observational and documents study methods were executed to provide the data. Recorded of spoken data was then converted and transcribed into written form. The data of documents, a Javanese novel and Javanese translation of Holly Quran, were re-transcribed according to the use of speech levels. The social community observed could not be separated from its social stratification: low and high classes. The existence of the speech community of Java could be specifically identified by their language speech levels: ngoko 'low' and krama 'high' speech levels co-exist in the language of Java. The finding showed that the members of a social community observed practices three social relationships: equality, deference, and inequality implemented in three communication patterns of use of speech levels of the language of Java reflected as a speech community. It could be concluded that the social relation between or among the members of a social community observed determines and influences the use of speech levels of the language of Java

Language and Style of Communication of Samin Community in Kudus, Central Java

This study aims to find out the style of language and communication used by the Samin Karangrowo community with their fellows and others outside the community. The Samin community, located in Karangrowo Village, Undaan District, Kudus Regency, is assumed to have unique style of language and communication due to their different attitude, behavior, and social conditions compared to others in Kudus Regency. Qualitative method with ethnographic approach is used in this study. This study then reveals that Samin Javanese language is mostly used in the Samin Karangrowo community. This study also finds out that Jawa ngoko and krama inggil are mostly used by the Samin people to communicate with others outside their community. This study aims to determine the language choice of Indonesian ethnic Javanese, especially of the Brang Kidul of Ponoragan; based on the distinguishing vocabulary and intonation in the narrative. “Ponorogo Brang Kidul” is the designation for the southern part of Ponorogo Regency of the East Java Province. Employing qualitative research method, sociolinguistic approach, and research communication model, this research was conducted in the higher education community toward three respondents who are native Ponoragan Javanese speakers. The research data were obtained from recorded dialogues of speakers in four speech contexts between students and lecturers and between fellow students.
