Foamed concrete containing various amounts of organic-mineral additives
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2019
The present study evaluated the combined effects of organic-mineral additive based on a superplasticizer SR 5000F and the active mineral additive Fly Ash, Blast Furnace Slag and Silica Fume SF-90 on properties of foam concrete (FC). The calculation of mixture proportions of FC is applied in accordance with the absolute volume method. Besides, the compressive strength and flexural strength of foam concrete are determined by Russian standard GOST 10180-2012. The results from experiments show that flexural and compressive strength of the FC obtained respectively, from 3.25 to 5.08 MPa and from 13.91 to 26.87 MPa. The use of an organic-mineral additive in the mixture was led to increasing the compressive and flexural strength of foam concrete at the age of 28 days, respectively, from 8% to 93% and from 6% to 56%. The relationship between compressive strength and curing age, compressive and flexural strengths of the FC were also determined in this investigation. The results of this study demonstrated that the use of appropriate amounts of fly ash and blast furnace slag to partially replace natural sand could produce eco-friendly foam concrete, which has many positive environmental impacts.
Efficiency of Waste as Cement Replacement in Foamed Concrete—A Review
Sustainability
Foamed concrete is a lightweight construction material that has gained popularity due to its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Foamed concrete production involves using cement as a binding agent, which results in a high carbon footprint. In response to sustainable development goals (SDG), there has been a growing interest in exploring alternative materials that can replace cement to improve energy efficiency, climate change, resource efficiency, and overall improvement of foamed concrete properties. Several tons of waste generated annually from industry, agriculture, and quarries are dumped into landfills and cause environmental impacts. Nevertheless, the efficiency of this waste presents an interesting question and there is limited knowledge of its use in foamed concrete. Hence, a review study is needed to evaluate the efficiency of different waste materials that could be used to replace cement in foamed concrete production. The objective of this research is to ...
Effect of additives on mechanical and thermal properties of lightweight foamed concrete
This paper reports the results of experimental works that have been performed to investigate the mechanical and thermal properties of lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) with different additives. LFC with three different densities of 600, 1000 and 1400 kg/m 3 were cast and tested. Fly ash, lime and polypropylene fiber were incorporated with the LFC at different proportions. Compressive, flexural and drying shrinkage tests were carried out up to 180 days to evaluate the mechanical properties. The Hot Disk Thermal Constants Analyzer was used to establish different thermal conductivity values of LFC of different densities and additives. Scanning electron microscopy was used to give a detail view on each of particles produced by the reaction of additives in hydration process. The addition of additives in LFC showed no contribution on compressive strength but improvement in the flexural and shrinkage test results. LFC integrating various additives only contribute slight increase for therma...

Due to its superior characteristics, such as low density, high thermal insulation and high fire resistance, foamed concrete is gaining popularity in the construction field. Nonetheless, lack of knowledge remains regarding the prediction of the mechanical and physical properties of foamed concrete; necessitating further experimentation and modelling. This effort comprises eighteen mix proportions (experiments) with two different types of fillers (sand and lime powder); divided into two groups (density ranges); Group I: 563to-1016 kg/m and Group II: 935-to-1374 kg/m. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of input-proportions/ratios such as: foam volume, lime-to-filler ratio and cement-to-filler ratio on the physical and mechanical properties of foamed concrete. These properties include density, compressive strength, flexural strength and thermal conductivity. Three statistical approaches are used for this investigation: (i) Taguchi orthogonal array method to get th...
Evaluation of the lightweight foamed concrete characteristics
Challenge Journal of Concrete Research Letters
The purpose of this paper is to assess the properties of light weight foamed concrete. In this research, two phases are investigated. The first stage explored the characteristics of fresh and hardened foamed concrete using a foaming agent. The following parameters were employed in this study: foaming agent used as a volume of concrete mix by 10, 20, and 40%, fly ash used as a replacement of cement content by 10, 25, and 50%, and polypropylene fiber used with varied volume fractions of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0%. Slump values are applied to evaluate the fresh properties. To evaluate the hardened concrete, the dry density and compressive strength at 7 and 28 days are computed. Furthermore, the 28-day tensile splitting strength and flexural strength are studied. The effect of a high temperature was evaluated. The second stage investigated the effects of polypropylene fiber on both fresh and hardened concrete. It was observed that foaming agents improve fresh characteristics while decreasing c...
The sustainability of natural environment and eco-systems are highly desirable. Waste generated from construction force mankind to find new dumping ground. At the same time, more natural resources are required to be used as construction material. In order to overcome this problem, a study on the use of concrete waste in concrete block was conducted. Thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. Three varieties of concrete mixtures prepared whereby every one of them containing different amount of concrete waste, 0%, 5% and 15% respectively. These mixtures were analyzed for data on their compressive strength, density and ultrasonic pulse velocity by using cube specimens. Thermal investigations were carried out by concrete block of model design. The results obtained indicate that, the thermal data shows 15% of concrete waste mixture has the lowest temperature than surrounding area. For the density and compressive strength were shown the control mixture is the highest which is 2390 kg/m3 and 40.69 N/mm2 at 28 days. The pulse velocity indicated the medium quality which is 4016 m/s for 5% of concrete waste mixture.
A study on properties of foamed concrete with natural and synthetic foaming agent
2009
Foamed concrete consists of cement, water, fine aggregate and air voids. It is relatively homogeneous and do not contain coarse aggregate phase. Properties of foamed concrete depends on the type of binder and foaming agent used. Here two types of foaming agents are used-natural and synthetic. A partial replacement of binding material is done with silica fume which provides additional strength compared to foam concrete without silica fume. This paper which based on the foam concrete properties and preparation process analyses the research progress of silica fume effect on performance of foamed concrete.

Foam concrete is a type of porous concrete it is similar to aerated concrete. It is a type of lightweight concrete. The mix usually having cement, filler (commonly sand) and foam, have densities vary from 300kg/m3 to 1800kg/m3. One of the main disadvantages of foam concrete is the large consumption of fine sand as filler material. Usage of different types of fillers in foam concrete can minimize the usage of fine river sand significantly and make the work economic and eco-friendly. This study focus on to investigate the various effect on foamed concrete by using different filler material like glass powder, plastic powder, crumb rubber powder, soil, GGBS, quarry dust. Further, aim is to compare its compressive strength and permeability properties of foam concrete by using various filler material.
Some Engineering Properties of Foamed Concrete for Sustainable Technological Development
European Journal of Engineering and Technology Research, 2021
A study of the technology of foamed concrete production is carried out. The engineering properties and applications of this type of concrete are presented for varying densities so as to effectively tap the advantages of its use for specific purposes. The properties considered are the 7-day compressive strength, thermal conductivity, modulus of elasticity and drying shrinkage. A study of the behaviours of foamed concrete at varying dry densities for the different characteristics was undertaken. Results indicate that as the dry density increases, the engineering properties increase though at different rates for the 7-day Compressive strength, Thermal conductivity, and Modulus of elasticity. The drying shrinkage decreases as the dry density increases. A comparative study of the 7-day Compressive strength and Modulus of elasticity show that they both follow the same trend over the varying dry density except at a dry density of 1200 kg/m3. A comparative study of the thermal conductivity ...
Experimental Study on Mechanical and Thermal Behavior of Foamed Concrete
Materials Today: Proceedings, 2018
Foamed concrete possesses characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and low density. Foamed concrete reduces dead loads on the structure, saves energy and lowers the labour cost during construction. Foam concrete consists of cement, fly ash, water and air voids. The foaming agent used to generate foam is sodium lauryl ether sulphate. Foam concrete can have 10% to 70% air, which results in a material that is lightweight but may compromise the compressive strength and durability properties. Although it has been shown in the research that less connected air voids yield a lower reduction in compressive strength, with the increase in air voids the thermal resistance in increased. The properties like compressive strength and thermal resistance are studied. Six batches of Foamed concrete were prepared with varying air content 15%, 17%, and 20%. The foamed concrete cube and slab are used for compression and thermal testing. The dry density of foamed concrete varies from 860 kg/m 3 to 1245 kg/m 3 , and the compressive strength varies from 2.5-6.5 MPa. In this research, the Dry density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity of foamed concrete is compared with the clay bricks. If foamed concrete blocks are used instead of clay bricks, almost 50% of the dead load of the building can be reduced. The thermal conductivity of foamed concrete varies from 0.021-0.035 W/mK. Key outcomes revealed that foamed concrete has good potential to be used for lightweight structural applications for low-rise buildings owing to its evolution of mechanical properties, transport properties and thermal resistance.
