Representation of women in property and mining: measuring effectiveness of gender equality initiatives (original) (raw)

2017

Abstract

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of gender equality initiatives on women’s representation in Australian property development and mining industries. It suggests and tests a positive relationship between gender equality initiatives (human resource, work-life and sex-based harassment prevention initiatives) and women’s representation at management, non-management levels and organisational levels, derived from the signaling theory. It also suggests and tests the moderating effect of gender composition of the top management team on the main relationships, derived from the upper echelon theory. Archival Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) data from 405 organisational reports were used. The findings partially support the proposed hypotheses. Theoretical, research and practical implications are discussed.
