Modeling the interaction of milking frequency and nutrition on mammary gland growth and lactation

A mathematical model of biological mechanisms regulating lactation is constructed. In particular, the model allows prediction of the effect of milking frequency on milk yield and mammary regression, and the interaction of nutrition and milking frequency in determining yield. Possible interactions of nutrition with milking frequency on alveolar dynamics are highlighted. The model is based upon the association of prolonged engorgement (as a consequence of milk accumulation) of active secretory alveoli with changes in gene expression that result in impairment and, ultimately, cessation of milk secretion. The emptying of alveoli at milking, following alveolar contraction induced by oxytocin, prevents this process and also allows quiescent alveoli to reactivate. Prolonged engorgement results in apoptosis of the secretory cells and, hence, regression of the mammary gland. Modeling the effect of energy status on mammary gland growth and lactation

The impact of nutrition on lactation can be separated into acute effects, affecting day-to-day yield, and chronic effects, which govern the persistency of lactation and rate of decline of the lactation curve. A mathematical model of the mammary gland was constructed to investigate both acute and chronic effects. Mammary growth is expressed in terms of the dynamics of populations of active (secreting) and quiescent (engorged) alveoli. The secretion rate of active alveoli is expressed in terms of the energy status of the dam. The model was fitted to data from a 2 x 2 factorial trial in which lactation curves were measured for heifers of two different genotypes (North American and New Zealand Holstein-Friesians) fed two different diets [grass and total mixed rations (TMR)]. Mathematical analysis of mammary ducts in lactating human breast

This work studies a simple model for milk transport through lactating human breast ducts, and describes mathematically the mass transfer from alveolar sacs through the mammary ducts to the nipple. In this model both the phenomena of diffusion in the sacs and conventional flow in ducts have been considered. The ensuing analysis reveals that there is an optimal range of bifurcation numbers leading to the easiest milk flow based on the minimum flow resistance. This model formulates certain difficult-to-measure values like diameter of the alveolar sacs, and the total length of the milk path as a function of easy-to-measure properties such as milk fluid properties and macroscopic measurements of the breast. Alveolar dimensions from breast tissues of six lactating women are measured and reported in this paper. The effect of level of feeding, genetic merit, body condition score and age on biological parameters of a mammary gland model

An evolutionary algorithm was applied to a mechanistic model of the mammary gland to find the parameter values that minimised the difference between predicted and actual lactation curves of milk yields in New Zealand Jersey cattle managed at different feeding levels. The effect of feeding level, genetic merit, body condition score at parturition and age on total lactation yields of milk, fat and protein, days in milk, live weight and evolutionary algorithm derived mammary gland parameters was then determined using a multiple regression model. The mechanistic model of the mammary gland was able to fit lactation curves that corresponded to actual lactation curves with a high degree of accuracy. The senescence rate of quiescent (inactive) alveoli was highest at the very low feeding level. Evaluation of a mechanistic lactation model using cow, goat and sheep data

SUMMARYA mechanistic lactation model, based on a theory of mammary cell proliferation and cell death, was studied and compared to the equation of Wood (1967). Lactation curves of British Holstein Friesian cows (176 curves), Spanish Churra sheep (40 curves) and Spanish Murciano–Granadina goats (30 curves) were used for model evaluation. Both models were fitted in their original form using non-linear least squares estimation. The parameters were compared among species and among parity groups within species.In general, both models provided highly significant fits to lactation data and described the data accurately.
