An Exploratory Study on Design Process in Architecture: Perspective of Creativity
Creativity Studies, 2021
Any design challenge could be solved by identifying systemic complexity in the issue before following any problem-solving process. Designers approach problems in different forms but historically worked effectively to build a template or phase sequence. The design process can be used by designers virtually in any project which plays a crucial role in designing innovative architectural projects for many architects. Many studies were conducted to analyze, review, compare and recommend several creative approaches to problem management that allow designers to recognize their work and propose new solutions. However, there are not many studies on the stages to follow to undergo a comprehensive design process in architecture. This study aims to review the various stages involved in the design process. Firstly, it addresses the conceptualization phase of design critically examining the creativity and ideation process with creative and strategic thinking. Secondly, it discusses the representa...
Creativity in Architecture: The Cognitive Process
2013
According to the cognitive approach, the paper develops the analysis of the design process in architecture and reflects on the cognitive processes applied to space and design, in order to identify the role that creativity place in the process. The paper analyses also the variations and the restrains, which feeds creativity during the development of the architectural project. The paper wants to demonstrate the fundamental importance of memories in developing planning process and creativity expressed in it. The explored contribution of cognitive science supports this thesis. Even the writings of architects as well as critical writings on architecture lead us in the same direction. By means of an experiment we demonstrates how the same planning request activates in the expert agent particular links and not others. These links start a specific, special and adventurous trip in memories and in study references. THE CHALLENGE OF COMPLEXİTY & CREATIVITY FACTOR IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Architectural design process is subject to ambiguities surrounding not only definition of the procedures and the flow of the process, but also the nature of the information to be analyzed. This state of affairs is generally thought to require creative thinking for solving both different aspects of the problem, and integration of the parts of the solution. Creativity is mainly explained on the basis of novelty, utility and surprise. But it is not considered to be a unitary concept.
The Construction of Architectural Ideas
PosFAUUSP
This work discusses how ideas are constructed in the design process of architecture projects, identifying what enables their emergence, development, selection and elimination. A qualitative and exploratory research method was used. The basic assumption is that ideas are mainly the result of knowledge, although influenced by subjective factors of the designer: criticism acts as a filter of ideation, thus governing the process of selection and disposal of ideas. Theories, assumptions and arguments of other researchers on the subject of creativity were confronted with the findings presented. This revealed a pattern in the construction of ideas during architectural design processes that puts into question the theory in which ideas arise from the interaction between designers and their sketches.
Typology of imagination in the process of architectural design
Bagh-e Nazar, 2019
The paper focuses on the design subject. The matter of what is design and how it is work has always been the concern of theorists and researchers. In the meantime, it is a significant issue that rather than the existence of a single theory, we have a variety of views and context of the attitude. When uncertainty arises, we are confronted with a phenomenon that is not linear and cannot be perceived just through the logic. Some find metaphysical aspects, some have examined unconscious from the psychological point of view and others have a mystical look at the issue. As a designer and audience, this unknown aspect of design can be mysterious, stimulant, frightening, or enjoyable. Design as creativity arises from designer’s individual physical and mental world, it is created by imagination, measured by science, and once again returns to the imagination. A set of internal and external components is involved in design. Recognizing this design space and its transformation is what matters to us. An approach is process-centered. In addition to studies on the characteristics of physical space, mental space’s characteristics are also should be studied. We consider this mental space to be the same as the imaginary space of the designer. Direct access to the imagination mechanism is impossible, but we can try to explain its effectiveness on the structural levels. The research method is a synthesis of narrative and hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis.it is process-oriented and focuses on the design process. The research is based on a set of connections and interactions. creativity should be relying on the imagination. It is a lovely escape with no limits. in imagination, everything is possible. It is an experience of freedom. Everyone’s having a unique imaginary space that is quite different from others. A series of individual elements forms the characteristics of this space. in a design process, designer flows in continuous transition between this imaginative space and physical space.
The structure of reasoning and emergence of creative insights in architectural design process
Fifth International Congress of International Association of Societies of Design Research IASDR, 2013
This paper investigates the emergence of creative insights in architectural design processes with an aim to investigate whether there is a recurring pattern between design creativity and cognition. In the design process, paradigm shifts and sudden changes in the flow of prevailing thoughts are venues of interest to search for creative insights. Our question is: What is the cognitive context of which the sudden emergence of insights occur in absence of, convergence with, or in conflict with, the preceding established stimulus-responses? A design case study is analysed using a descriptive model; linkography protocol is constructed and the gleams of sudden insights (creative notions) are demarcated. Two major recurring patterns of the emergence of insights are perceived: 1) insights appearing in dense linkograph networks with significance to one chief prevailing idea reflects "incremental" thinking process; the concept evolves through accumulative gradual moves of design), while 2) sudden stimulations appear often in the transferral (bridging) nodes between different sub-networks, with high probability to emerge with multiple exchanges of ideas between sketching media. This outcome supports the argument that breakthrough ideas result in the collision between two different hunches of thought (i.e. early preceding and late ones) and that no ideas come from nowhere.
Architectural thinking and some aspects of technical creativity
Human systems management, 1984
We are largely surrounded by and included in increasingly complex technical systems. These systems often border on the absurd even though they rely on logical and physical forms. This is because they move away from the logical 'simplicity' of natural forms. This paper approaches some specific aspects of technical products, i.e. those connected to their formative structure. M. Draganescu emphasized that the aesthetics and the functions of a product are determined by the consonance between the formative structure and the natural structure, and called this 'architectural thinking'. As an example, consider the well-known 'golden number' found both in natural crystals and in artistic and technical products such as the Parthenon. Two questions which this paper addresses are: What is a formative structure? How can the consonance, or harmony, between such a structure and that of a 'natural' one be approached? Gorun Manolescu has a Ph. D. in Engineering Science and graduated at the Oil and Gas Institute, Bucharest, Romania in 1960. During 1977-1979 he was professor of information systems at the Oil and Gas Institute. He is now senior researcher at the Central Institute for Management and Informatics , Bucharest, Romania, working in the area of CAD. Dr. Manolescu has published more than 50 articles, books and research papers in the areas of informatics, management, automata and technical creativity. He has conducted many large-scale information systems projects, e.g., the technical-scientific information system of the Oil and Gas Industry (Romania), CAD systems in the fields of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, etc. (Romania).
A Design Research: The creative cognitive approach in the processes of shaping and making of a place
Creativity is a capability dominated by all humans, and is a natural part of the thinking process. Creative ideas are often generated during conceptual design which is the first step in the design process. Designers think about new concepts and develop them into design options. The creative cognition view of creativity provides a strong foundation for analyzing the conceptual design process because it utilizes basic cognitive mechanisms to explain how individuals create. One basic goal of the creative cognition approach is to improve understanding of creative process by using the methods and concepts of cognitive science. The present research aims at examining the creative cognitive process of an architect during the act of designing a house for her/himself. In order to investigate the contents of a thought process, protocol analysis method will be adapted to this experimental study. The evaluation will be structured on the action categories defined in cognitive research in design that covers physical, functional, perceptional and conceptual manners. This research lies within the scope of examinations of cognitive process of an architect for crystallizing design ideas in early design processes.
Creativity is an original cognitive ability and problem solving process which enables individuals to use their intelligence in a way that is unique and directed toward coming up with a product. The most common means of identifying creativity has been through its products. The arts including sculpture, painting, and the humanities including writing, law are not only areas in which human creativity has been exhibited. Science and engineering fields are also full of discoveries and products that meet our tests of creativity. Today, there is a need for measuring creativity in different fields of disciplines and professions such as personnel selection, education and fine arts. Architectural education is one of them because, it can be defined as "a design study which get it's origins from creativity". While the encouragement and rewarding of creativity is very important in all fields, it is especially important in the field of architectural education. The objective of this paper is to investigate creative thinking standards of architectural design students and to test the effectiveness of architectural design education on the improvement of general creative thinking abilities. In order to accomplish this, two sample groups are formed from different levels of education. The main method used in this research is TTCT which was first published in the USA. The test measures verbal -visual creativity and has reliability -validity studies. In the conclusion of the paper, a discussion has been made on relationship between the general creative thinking ability and architectural education.
An Introduction to Creative Thinking in Architectural Design
2013
Architecture in Jordan academia and professionalism considered as an engineering not an artistic practice. Architectural education in Jordan and in particular the University of Jordan, and in the last 15 years took a dramatic trend. Number of students accepted in the first year, Department of Architecture, rise from 50 to 210, (JU 2006-2007) while their artistic skills and abilities drop dramatically. Although, scientifically most of them are highly qualified, few of them have any clue of design, creativity, way of thinking, projects problem solving, and many manual and mental skills. On the other side, architectural schools, curriculum and courses did not catch with the students growing numbers, their scientific background and low arts knowledge. Also it did not catch up with the changing architectural trends and movements, or the rapidly emerging information technology, and above all new methods, developed internationally, in ways of teaching, tools and techniques, and ways of thi...
