Moral Compass in Management: Why Every Modern Organization Must Have a Chief Ethics Officer, A Biblical Perspective (original) (raw)
Related papers
This study examines some antecedents and consequences of ethical leadership. Using a dataset from the King James Version of the Bible, I argue for and propose that maternal influence will lead to leaders being ethical while paternal influence appears to have no impact on leaders being ethical. I also argue and propose that ethical leaders are more likely to achieve longer tenures and to lead their organizations to better performance. I develop propositions based on the findings from the analysis of my qualitative and quantitative data.
Moral Leadership: Ancient Lessons for Modern Times
The Bible does not hide mistakes made by great people. This makes it an extremely valuable text for teaching moral character. In fact, the lessons learned from mistakes often provide a more lasting and powerful impact than those learned from doing things right. These lessons are not only valuable for individuals in positions of leadership but all people who wish to improve their character. Stories of the following Biblical personalities are examined: Jacob, Joseph, Balaam, Samson, Saul, David, Solomon, and Haman. This examination indicates that the purpose of leadership is not fame, power, fortune, or settling old scores, but to lead people with truth and righteousness. Leaders must be ethical and should not cover up injustices, even on the part of loved ones.
Leadership and Ethical Responsibility: The Three Aspects of every Decision
The WEA Global Issues Series, 2013
Executives have to continually make responsible decisions. However, Christians who are executives often do not know how to build a bridge between their underlying values and the continual requirements of everyday working life. The author sees a main problem in the way that within Christianity the three sides of ethical decisions have been played off against each other. However, one finds in the Bible that commandments, wisdom, and the heart all belong inseparably together. Therefore, norms, the particular situation, and existential concern all have to be considered in order to make mature decisions.

ANCIENT WISDOM FOR MODERN MANAGEMENT. SEVERAL IMPORTANT LESSONS ABOUT LEADERSHIP FROM JUDAISM
This paper examines an ancient commentary on part of the Hebrew scriptures, attached to the biblical text and shows that there are many important messages about leadership embedded in it. This paper intends to answer a few questions: ―Is Judaism connected to modern management?‖, ―What lesson does the storyteller impart to his audience?‖, ―What does Judaism teach us about leadership?‖, What is the impact of intercultural contexts in management and leadership?‖, ―What is the difference between hearing and listening?‖, and ―What is the nature of leaders?‖. The key lessons are that leaders must be compassionate; humble; and have a willingness to listen, make changes, and admit to mistakes. Competent leaders should have full command of the main areas of the leadership elements, and should be able to use each of these elements according to the requirements of the case. This paper also examines the influence of compassionate leadership and servant leadership on productivity and profitability.
Leadership Principles for all Time: Lessons from Biblical Leaders

This paper presents numerous articles dealing with biblical leaders such as Abraham, Judah, Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Esther, Ezra and many others and demonstrates numerous insights about leadership that may be derived from their stories. These readings might be of value to someone teaching a course in biblical or ethical leadership.
Biblical Leadership: Insights for Today's Managers
The scholarly literature in management has paid little attention to the study of Biblical figures as leaders. This paper aims to advance the effort to fill this gap by demonstrating that many insights about successful and unsuccessful leadership may be derived from the Bible. Successful leaders demonstrated a willingness to be different, a passion for justice, humility, and a concern for others. Unsuccessful leaders were sidetracked from their mission by the hunger for power or by lust and envy.
What Went Wrong? Lessons in Leadership from Solomon, the Bible’s Wisest and Worst Ruler
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership, 2019
This paper attempts to demonstrate the many insights about successful and unsuccessful leadership that may be derived from the life of King Solomon, who, according to Scripture, was the wisest man who ever lived. Solomon may have been very wise but made some very serious blunders as a leader that led to the breakup of his empire after his son took over. This paper answers the obvious question as to which mistake/character flaw transformed Solomon from a great leader to an unsuccessful leader. This paper will also examine the Book of Proverbs attributed to Solomon and see what leadership lessons can be gleaned from it. One question that the paper will attempt to answer is whether or not Solomon followed the path of wisdom discussed in Proverbs?
