Journal of Economics and Behavioral Studies, 2018
Social media can be a useful tool in public relations in non-governmental organisations (NGOs), but do NGOs make use of social media in their quest for service delivery in South Africa? Social networking sites, blogging, email, instant messaging, and online journals are some of the technological changes that changed the way interaction between people and how they gather information. Abstract This term paper focused on the Influence of social media platforms as Public Relations tools by selected companies in Nigeria. The research was informed by the growing usage of social media platforms such as facebook, twitter, blog, LinkedIn among others, as a veritable tool of marketing communication. Taking into account the speed of change associated with this new media adoption, the authors examine 3 companies in three sectors of the Nigerian economy who have galvanised the effective usage of these social media tools. The companies are MTN in the telecommunications sector, Guaranty Trust Bank, GTB, in the banking sector and Jumia from the services sector. From my findings, on social media tracking of these companies, 2.8 million viewers on facebook,270,000 on Twitter and over 500,000 viewers on YouTube. The theoretical underpinning of this research is the development communication theory covering Technology Determinism and information processing theory. This theory shows that people are driven by social change occasioned by technology and quick access to information which invariably determines their preferences or choices for product and services. This study takes a narrative approach, based on a critical analysis of review of literatures on public relations, social media, and spiced it with interviews with the former chairman of institute of Public Relations, members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR)working as PR Managers or Corporate Marketing Officer in some of these companies and lastly, some Nigerians who have used these social media tools to enjoy the services of these companies. While my findings indicate a growing demand for social media platforms, as public relations tools by three Nigerian companies, there still exist mixtures of traditional media outlets as one of the major tools of PR due to technological, infrastructural and level of literacy in the country. Suggestions were given on the way forward for more value addition on the usage of social media platforms by Public Relations firms for corporate organisations in Nigeria.

Background: Organisations widely adopt social media to communicate with stakeholders, yet research into content marketing in the South African non-profit sector is sparse. It is concerned with consistently producing valuable and relevant content for social media. As it is generally associated with the field of marketing, limited research exists from a communication perspective. This perceived gap in taking a communication stance prompted this investigation into the ways in which these organisations attend to social media content aspects. Objectives: The research objective was to acquire a broad understanding of content marketing on social media, unique to South African non-profit organisations. Key areas that were uncovered and statistically verified in an earlier quantitative study and how these are attended to in real life were explored. Method: A qualitative approach was used to obtain in-depth insights into the use of content marketing. Semi-structured interviews were used as data collection method to explore non-profit sector's approaches to social media communication, and to determine whether their efforts could be regarded as being integrated. Results: The findings yielded valuable insights into the ways that non-profit sectors in South Africa practise social media communication. The benefits of using social media for communication is acknowledged, yet vital aspects such as sourcing content, considering stakeholders' needs and demographics communication, using available planning tools and recognising employees as internal ambassadors are not considered. This study examined the influence of social media on public relations practices in universities in South-East Nigeria. Qualitative research design was used to study eight public relations practitioners purposefully selected from eight universities in the zone. In-depth interviews conducted face -to -face and through telephone conversations were used to generate information from respondents. The study discovered that the use of social media by the public relations practitioners has changed the traditional methods of information dissemination in the universities. It was however discovered that the frequency which the PR practitioners use the social media was not enough to generate backlinks needed to improve the global ranking of their universities. The study recommended that universities should employ personnel dedicated to managing their social media platforms under the supervision of their public relations units.

This study investigates into how Millicom Ghana (Tigo) employs social media as a public relation tool in managing its organizational issues in Ghana. The study was conducted under the framework of qualitative research, while a case study design was used as the research strategy. Millicom (Tigo) Ghana was purposively sampled out of nine (9) Telecommunication companies in Ghana. Interviews and Distanced Virtual Ethnography were used as the instruments for data collection while the analysis was done by way of content and textual analysis. The issues management and relationship management theories formed the theoretical basis of the study. Findings showed that social media utilisation aided very much the public relations roles played in Tigo Ghana's management of issues. The dialogic social media utilisation facilitated information giving/requesting between Tigo Ghana and its stakeholders. It was also found that the most recurring issue/theme on social media was information giving/seeking, and is in consonance with the corporate communication strategy. However, stakeholders also identified more with the corporate social responsibility communication strategy. These findings demonstrate that there was strong desire for stakeholders/customers to consume or give information on diverse issues. Both Tigo Ghana and its stakeholders/customers are able to build and maintain relationships. The use of social media this way reduced friction between Tigo and its customers/stakeholders. The study therefore recommended that organisations should prioritise their corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication strategy as it has been found to aid in stakeholder engagement.

The burgeoning posture of the social media makes it a preferred media for information dissemination by individuals and organization, this study, therefore sought to evaluate the extent public relation practitioners in Rivers State are making the most of the social media in building organizational image and goodwill with their publics. The study adopted the survey research method with the Technological Determinism Theory and the Uses and Gratification Theory as its theoretical anchor. The study population comprised 1,052 registered members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relation Rivers State. Using the Check market online sample size calculator, a sample size of 282 was used for the study. The purposive sampling technique was used in selecting respondents for the study. Data were generated with the use of the questionnaire and analyzed using frequency distribution tables, percentages and weighted mean score. Finding revealed that PR practitioners' use of the social media in organizations in Rivers State is low (103 or 36.5%). Yet, the finding confirms that social media use by organizations can improve their image and publics' goodwill to a high extent (113 or 40.1%). Conversely, finding showed that most challenging in the use of the social media by PR practitioners in organizations in Rivers State is their aversion for the media (119). The study concluded that the exigency of meeting up the communication and information demands of organizations' publics' makes the use of the social media by PR practitioners incumbent. It recommended that organizations sub create a sub public relation unit, i.e e-public relations which will be saddled with managing all its social media platforms; the need for finding of the PR department to meet up the sustenance of social media presence and the need for promptness on feedback on issues raised by the public's on social media so as to bridge the communication gap.
Perceived benefits and challenges regarding the use of social media for public relations activities
COMMUNITAS, 2018
Social media holds important implications for the public relations profession. Researchers have identified many benefits that could be reaped when social media is used by organisations for public relations activities. However, there also are many challenges. According to Phillips' model of digital communication tools there are four variables associated with the benefits and challenges of using social media. This study investigated, by means of an online questionnaire survey, the perceptions of a randomly drawn sample of Gauteng-based public relations practitioners regarding such challenges and benefits. The results revealed that Twitter and Facebook are the most preferred social media for engaging with stakeholders. Further, it was found that when social media is used for purposes of public relations actions, public relations practitioners tend to perceive the possible social media benefits associated with the four variables to be more salient (or at least equally salient) than the possible social media challenges associated with the variables of this model.
