Nutritional Status and Body Image Satisfaction among Adolescent Girls

Background: Adolescence is a phase of accelerated growth and major physical changes take place in the body. Nutritional status during the crucial period of adolescence could be a potential predictor of body image perception. Objectives: The study aimed at assessing the nutritional status and body image satisfaction among adolescent girls. Methods: Descriptive study was conducted among 135 adolescent girls of selected school, Kochi selected through random sampling method. Tools used were structured questionnaire for demographic data, BMI for age growth chart (5-19 years) Z score according to WHO and nutritional history to assess nutritional status and body image satisfaction was assessed by modified version (SF-14) of Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Data was analyzed using SPSS version. Results: Majority (63.7%) of them having normal nutritional status, 17.8 % of them were mild thinness, 8.9% were overweight 7.4% of them were showing severe thinness and only 2.2 % of them were obese. Among that majority (57.8%) had mild concern, 8.9% of them having moderate concern and 2.2% of them having marked concern regarding the body image irrespective of their BMI. And also there was highly statistically significant (p=.000) association between nutritional status and body image satisfaction Interpretation and Conclusion: Though majority of study groups satisfied about their body image few girls felt moderate to marked concern with their nutritional status. Raising awareness of body image size and increasing body satisfaction with weight status should be established by good receptions of healthy lifestyle among girls.

Nutritional Status and Body Image Dissatisfaction among Adolescent Girls in Kaski District, Nepal

Adolescence is a stage of human life linked with gradual changes and rapid development. A good nutrition plays important in maintaining good health. Body image dissatisfaction affects the food habit and nutrition of the adolescent especially girls as they are concerned about their body image. Objective: To find out the relationship between nutritional status and body image dissatisfaction among adolescent girls. Methods: A Cross sectional study was carried out in Kaski district, Nepal from October 2013 to January 2014 among 240 female adolescent students of 11-19 years of age selected randomly from 8 schools of grade six to twelve using multistage simple random sampling technique. Structured self administered questionnaire, anthropometric assessment and figure rating scale were used. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Software for Social Sciences Version 16. Results: Few (4.6%) of the adolescents girls were classified as underweight, 80.4 percent were normal weight, and ten percent were overweight. More than four in five (80.9%) of the adolescents girls were dissatisfied with their body image where positive body image dissatisfaction was (41.7%) and negative body image dissatisfaction was (39.2%). Absence of body image dissatisfaction was found (19.2%). Conclusion: Body image dissatisfaction among adolescent girls was found high even though four in five girls had normal weight.

A Study on Prevalence of Obesity and Overweight among Adolescent Girls

The unabated rise in the prevalence of overweight in adolescents is one of the most alarming public health issues facing the world. The prevalence of obesity and overweight was determined among 732 affluent adolescent girls of Bengaluru. The results indicated that 21.17% of the girls were overweight and 13.38% were obese. Information regarding knowledge, attitude and dietary & lifestyle practices of 98 obese and 155 overweight adolescent girls was collected using a structured questionnaire. It was seen that although 49% of the adolescent girls had fair knowledge, and all the subjects had positive attitudes towards nutrition and healthy lifestyle, a negative correlation was seen between Knowledge and Practice; and Attitude and Practice. Faulty dietary practices such as irregular meal pattern, frequent consumption of energy dense, high calorie food and drinks and physical inactivity were seen to be the main causes of obesity and overweight in the girls. It was also seen that the intake of protein and fat was significantly higher (p<0.05) than the RDA for obese and overweight adolescents.

Background: Weight comments are commonly received by adolescents, but the accuracy of the comments and their effects on weight misperception are unclear. Aims & Objective: To know the perceptions of adolescents about their health status, body image, height and weight and then to compare it with their actual (Body Mass Index) BMI status. Material and Methods: This was Cross sectional study and Qualitative survey carried out using a self-administered semi-structured questionnaire among 1440 (748 girls and 692 boys) students from classes 6-12 in 7 English medium and 23 Gujarati medium schools. Five focus group discussions were held each with adolescent boys and girls from both Gujarati and English medium schools. Results: Regarding their perception about their health status, nearly 65% of the boys and girls felt that they were healthy. While their perception about the appropriateness of their height and weight, nearly half of the boys and girls felt that they had appropriate height and weight, One-fourth of them perceived themselves to be underweight, while another fourth thought that they were obese. When adolescents' perception of the appropriateness of height and weight was compared with their actual BMI, it was found that, 10 to 15% of them were underweight or undernourished while 25 to 30% of them were overweight or obese. Among those, having normal BMI, 59% of boys and 62% of girls felt that their height and weight was normal. Conclusion: There has been a need for addressing physical growth, particularly; height and weight need to be explained more scientifically and in depth.

Eating Habits and Body Image Perceptions of Senior High School Students

The study aims to examine the common eating habits of Senior High Students and their perception towards their body image whether it affects their self-perception and self-esteem or not. The researchers used a descriptive-correlational research design. A total of 274 respondents were chosen to participate in the study through stratified random sampling. The researchers adapted a revised version of BIQ-1 in determining the self-esteem and self-perception and Eating and Dietary habits questionnaire for eating habits of Senior High School students with the use of 5 point-Likert scale. Results shows that female has higher mean of 3.08 compared to male which has 3.06 in terms of eating habits. In terms of the students’ self-esteem, a mean of 2.40 is gathered with an average description. Lastly the student’s self-perception has a mean of 2.32 which also has a high description. From the data gathered, the researchers concluded that sex do not affect the eating habits of a person since there were no significant difference between the eating habits of male and female students accepting the study’s Ho. Additionally there is no relationship between the self-esteem and self-perception of students towards their body image thus accepting Ho, which gives the researcher a conclusion that body image does not affect one’s well-being generally. Researchers highly recommend that students should adopt proper eating habits, the community should promote proper awareness, health organizations should provide activities that could be more of us and future researchers should study the external factors that can affect the study.
