A Comparative Analysis of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Platforms

Informatica Economica, 2016

The MOOC platforms have known a considerable development in recent years due to the enlargement of online space and the shifting between traditional to virtual activities. These platforms made it possible for people almost everywhere to take online academic courses offered by top universities via open access to web and with unlimited participation. Thus, it came naturally to us to address the question what makes them so successful? The purpose of this paper is to report comparatively MOOC platforms in terms of features, based on the user's implication and demands. First, we chose four relevant lifelong learning platforms and then we structured three main categories for the platforms' qualification, depending on which we built our theory regarding the comparison between them. Our analysis consists of three sets of criteria: business model, course design and popularity among online users. Starting from this perspective, we built a range of representative factors for which we highlighted the major aspects for each platform in our comparative research.

MOOC Platforms: a Review and Comparison

International Journal of Engineering & Technology, 2018

For development courses in the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) requires the support of good technological infrastructure. Some MOOC platforms are part of the institution but some platforms are built by individual teachers or instructors. The objective of this study to reviews about characteristics in MOOC platforms and evaluation of comparison based on previous studies with specific in MOOC platforms. The databases in MOOC studies found in four databases namely Google Scholar, IEEExplore, Elsevier Science Direct, and Emerald. After the databases filtered, 20 papers in MOOC studies that selected and 4 databases related in development Open Learning and Udemy platforms. Evaluation of Free Platforms for Delivery of Massive Open Online Courses (Moocs)

Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education, 2017

For the hosting, management and delivery of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) it is necessary a technological infrastructure that supports it. Various educational institutions do not have or do not wish to invest in such a structure, possibly because MOOCs are not yet part of official programs of universities, but initiatives by a particular teacher or a research group. Focusing on this problem, this study seeks to identify platforms that make it possible to create, host and provide courses free of charges for the offeror; find in the respective literature, the basic requirements for MOOC platforms and to evaluate the platforms based on the raised requirements. In order to identify the platforms, information was sought in scientific articles and websites dealing with the comparison of platforms and listing the existing MOOC providers. For the definition of evaluation requirements, there was a search in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, looking for the term "Massive Open Online Courses". After applying some filters, 62 works that address platforms and technology were selected for analysis. As a result there is the identification of six platforms that allow the free supply of courses, the proposal for 14 requirements for reviewing them and a frame containing the evaluation of the identified platforms. This assessment is important since it brings knowledge as a basis for selecting a platform that is the most suitable one in terms of the chosen structure and method to store, manage and deliver courses in MOOC format.

An Overview on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as an E learning Platform A Review

Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have peaked in popularity with the vast improvement in technology with minimum infrastructure to connect to the Internet, thereby allowing learners to access the massive number of courses available through accredited universities and academic institutes. Coursera, edX, Udacity are some of the platforms in MOOCs that enable learners to get certified and gain knowledge in relevant fields. This paper focuses on signifying the importance of assessing the ideal effectiveness of the MOOCs platform, while conducting a review and identifying motives to enrol, pros and cons, and factors to drop out of MOOCs. The authors have identified four research questions in relation to the above facts in concern regarding the MOOCs platform, and a literature review has been carried out in this study by addressing the said research questions. The results of this review suggest that there exist multiple motives for the learners to enrol in MOOCs, and there is also a considerable attrition rate of the MOOCs learners from those courses. The reasons to drop out of MOOCs is therefore a significant area that must be discussed, and there are both pros and cons of this e-learning platform. Further, there is no proper method to assess the effectiveness of MOOCs and therefore, such an assessing procedure is a timely need, due to the fact that it is an online education platform, where individuals can gain access to plenty of courses available, irrespective of geographical boundaries and time constraints.

MOOCs: A New Means of Higher Learning

International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022

MOOCs are an innovative way to conduct teaching-learning in online, with the help of internet technology. The objectives of the study are to Know about the user friendly characteristics of MOOCS. Know the role of MOOCS as an alternative to traditional education, role of MOOCs in higher education. Explore the benefits of MOOCS and to know about the disadvantages of MOOCS. It is a qualitative research. The study is conducted on the bases of researcher observation and critically analysis of the providing facilities of MOOC S in higher education. MOOCs is so popular because it is based on learner centered pedagogy, select learner interest topic, Value oriented, Language is no barrier here, globally use, any time anywhere, Learning is so enjoyable. MOOCs are no alternative to traditional formal education but it is modified then traditional learning. The special role of MOOCs in higher education is it is a free platform, Access for all, Professional development, Provide new courses. Including above benefits there are some limitations of MOOCs are-absence of physical classroom, absence of teacher physical interaction, Here individual attention by the teacher is absent, in remote area where internet connection is week where it is a big problem, most courses are provided by English that's why language is one of the barriers, to assessment the students is difficult, interaction with teacher and other students is less.

A Brief Study on MOOCs

2019

This paper presents a brief report on the MOOCs.Some of the famous MOOCs are discussed with their key features and revenue models. The current research gap was identified.Based on the research work already done, various factors were identified which affect the adoption of MOOCs, these were classified based on two perspectives – user point of view and the university which is offering the MOOC. At the end of the paper, we highlight some of the primary research which is to be done in this field.

D2.1 Analysis of existing MOOC platforms and services

2014

The main objective of this task is to analyze features and services of MOOC platforms that are used in ECO and, secondly, in other commonly used MOOC platforms. This task takes into account the functionality that is required by the different pilots from two viewpoints: technological and pedagogical aspects. Firstly, to ensure this objective, this task performed a state-of-the-art review, mainly research papers and all annotated scientific literature. Secondly, we elaborate a Competitive Analysis Checklist for MOOC platforms. An approach based on technological and pedagogical items is suggested to define specific dimensions for this task. This Checklist will be a useful tool for evaluating MOOC platforms. Thirdly, five of the ECO platforms have been evaluated by using the authoring and delivery environment to check for the availability of features that are essential for the implementation of the pedagogical model as described in D2.1. It became clear that these platforms are not very suitable for the pedagogical model. Finally, a Guide for the Effective Creation of MOOCs has been drawn up indicating to assist course designers to compare the functionality, features, pedagogical and instructional advantages so they can choose the most suitable one for their areas of interest and needs.

On the basis of the research results we have reached conclusions about the ...

The MOOCs: origin, characterization, principal problems and challenges in Higher Education

2016

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are an innovation that have attracted public academic attention in recent times, and which have resulted in the evolution of e-learning (electronic learning) and so far have not achieved their expectations in Higher Education. This is due to the fact that from the outset these courses have faced a number of problems and questions regarding their acceptance, credibility, quality, methods of assessment, learning outcomes and more; which has generated controversy among their opponents, fans and even the creators of MOOCs. This work forms part of a doctoral investigation; in essence these are the results of the preliminary and exploratory stages in the research process, in which projections on the solution of some problems will be included. MOOCs: Their evolution, problems and challenges up to 2015, will surely help to minimize the high dropout rates of students in MOOCs, supported by mobile technology.
