A systematic literature review on Internet of things in education: Benefits and challenges

Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 2019

With close to 20.4 billion devices connected to the Internet to be deployed by 2020, Internet of things (IoT) is already being leveraged in diverse sectors. Now, because of the ubiquitous nature of IoT devices, schools and academic institutions are looking to incorporate IoT in educational activities. With the increased use of IoT in the education domain, it is of utmost importance to study how this technology with its distinguished system functions such as sensing and decision making can support and challenge the pedagogical processes for all interrelated actors (faculty, students, and staff) as well as all involved assets (e.g., libraries, classrooms, and labs). Although there have been several contributions on the inclusion of IoT into the education domain, there is still a lack of consolidated and coherent views on this subject. Hence, we are motivated to close the gap of knowledge and embarked on mapping out the published studies available. This study presents the results of a systematic literature review focusing on the benefits and the challenges faced in education in integrating IoT into the curriculum and educational environments. Different mapping views of the extracted studies are provided as long as a summary of the already implemented tools and a list of gap research questions yet to be investigated.

A survey: the role of the internet of things in the development of education

Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2020

There is a demand to change the contents and activities, and adapt the methods for higher education institutions, especially, universities to let researchers and educational to act more efficiently in a digital context. A well-designed campus, finally combining technology, is basic for developing digital university by facilities for learning, teaching, and research, enhancing the student trials, and supplying the convenient settings. Within digital universities, technology can improve security, reduce costs, and offer devices for faculty, scholars, academics, and students. These advantages give more attention to university processes and evolutions, the experience of researchers, and students. In this research, we have done a study on the Internet of things and what its role in the development of education through the review for a group of previous research. In addition, we have studied the smart class and its components and the difference from the traditional class, and then we have...

Internet of Things in Education

Innovative STEM Education

The Internet of Things (IoT) maintains its pivotal role in the overall structure of information and communication technologies and societal growth. The goal of this research is to determine the opportunity for IoT usage in education as well as to optimize its advantages and to encourage students to use it in their education. The research demonstrates usage and implementation of IoT in education. It describes how the IoT, and its services and equipment are implemented and how they are used during the teaching process in lower schools, high schools, and universities. The findings of this research will benefit educational institutions and their employees in general, as well as students in particular.

Role and importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IOT) in Higher Education

Technology, including the Internet of Things (IoT), plays a pivotal role in the development of individuals and various sectors, including higher education. The adoption of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the integration of IoT devices in higher education have transformed the learning and teaching process, creating an innovative and enhanced learning environment. Many universities have embraced the integration of technologies, recognizing the benefits it brings.

Develop This -Education in the Age of the Internet of Things

Proceedings of the EADiM Academic Network Conference 2012. The Social University: Towards a Higher Education with Students as Producers. 22-24 November 2012, University of Graz, Graz, Austria., 2012

Introduction Developments in the area of Media Technology proceed very fast, and perhaps, revolutionary; where the day before yesterday the internet ruled, yesterday the web arrived, this morning it was the web 2.0 and after lunch, we enter the Internet of Things. The main implication for ICT curricula, such as Media Technology, is that factual knowledge, book knowledge and the know-how to use particular programming languages and tools are gradually becoming less important whereas the ability to keep track of developments in the research area (and not just 'on the market'), the ability to do research, how to develop conceptual solutions and how to translate concepts into software are becoming more and more important.

Introducing the Internet of Things to Computer Science Students

The Eurasia Proceedings of Educational & Social Sciences, 2018

The aim of this paper is to show the importance of integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) into the curriculum, especially for computer science students. The Internet of Things is a new trend in the development of the Internet, where focus is on interaction between objects, i.e. "things". The IoT has become very widespread and the number of smart devices is increasing on a daily basis, thus we are talking about smart wearables, smart home, smart city, smart cars, smart healthcare, smart agriculture, etc. Therefore, it is important to familiarize computer science students with the IoT concept by examining literature and participating in practical projects which prepare them for future jobs. This paper describes the learning model with IoT projects as a part of course curriculum, for a 1st year Computer science students of the Polytechnic of Rijeka. The working hypothesis is that students show better results on the course with IoT projects in curriculum than in previous years with traditional teaching methods. The most significant goal of such a project is to reduce the educational gap between the skills demanded by the labor market and the practical knowledge of the future workforce in the IT field.

Internet of Things in Higher Education: A Study on Future Learning Internet of Things in Higher Education: A Study on Future Learning

In the coming years, technology will impact the learning experience in many ways. Internet of Things (IoT) continues to confirm its important position in the context of Information and Communication Technologies and the development of society. With the support of IoT, institutions can enhance learning outcomes by providing more affluent learning experiences, improved operational efficiency, and by gaining real-time, actionable insight into student performance. The purpose of this study is to find out the potential of IoT in higher education and how to maximize its benefits and reducing the risks involved with it. Further efforts are necessary for releasing the full potential of IoT systems and technologies. Therefore, this paper presents a study about the impact of IoT on higher education especially universities. IoT stands to change dramatically the way universities work, and enhance student learning in many disciplines and at any level. It has huge potential for universities or any other educational institutions; if well prepared to ensure widespread and successful implementation by leadership, staff, and students. IoT needs development where universities can lead. Academics, researchers, and students are in a unique place to lead the discovery and development of IoT systems, devices, applications, and services. Moreover, this paper provides an evidences about the future of IoT in the higher education during the next few years, which have offered by a number of research organizations and enterprises. On the other hand, IoT also brings tremendous challenges to higher education. Hence, this paper also presents the perspective on the challenges of IoT in higher education.
