Needs Analysis in ESP Context: Saudi Engineering Students as a Case Study

Needs analysis can be a vital asset for teachers of English for specific purposes (ESP) to identify their learners' key requirements or needs and determine the areas in which they are lacking skills. Against this background, this study was undertaken during the academic year 2015-16 to define the English language needs of engineering students (N= 200) majoring in civil engineering and industrial engineering. The data of this study was collected from different sources, including a classroom observation protocol, a questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview with both ESP and subject-matter teachers (SM) at Umm Al-Qura University. Results of the data analysis offered significant insights as to the teaching of ESP course. The study revealed that receptive skills (i.e., reading and listening) were mostly focused on in ESP classes. It has been also reported that writing and reading along with speaking skills were needed more than others. The data analysis helped to determine the most important language tasks in the context of engineering studies. Finally, a call was being made by both ESP and SM teachers to enhance the quality of the ESP course taught to engineering students by offering relevant suggestions. Based on these findings, the present study concluded with implications for course designers and recommendations for future studies.
Needs Analysis for English for Specific Purpose course Development for Engineering Students in Korea
In this era of globalization, English communication ability for engineers whose native language is not English has become as important as their major related abilities. As Korea has been implementing export-oriented economy policy, industries should be equipped with global communication tool, English. In engineering fields, the accreditation system for engineering education has been adopted to meet the global standard for engineers. Engineering majors provide more English courses in addition to the general English courses. The purpose of this paper is to provide detailed description of the needs analysis to develop an ESP course for engineering students in Korea. A needs analysis through survey questionnaire was done on three different groups: students group, engineering professors group, and industry workers group. With the triangulated source the data could get credibility and is expected to serve for ESP course development.
English language is considered as an official language in Pakistan and is medium of instructions within schools, colleges and universities. However, no study has been conducted to analyse the current situations, needs, problems, and wants of students who study engineering programs. Therefore, this review study is conducted to fill this gap. The purposes of this research were: (1) to investigate needs of engineering students to use English, (2) to find problems of engineering students in using English in their academic and professional studies, and to explore the students' wants regarding the purpose, content and methodology of engineering students to use English at QUEST Pakistan. This research theoretically tends to develop ESP courses regarding different engineering fields. The literature review directs that the needs of the learners can be fulfilled if the ESP courses in different engineering fields will be completely successful. It also discusses the important principles related to the engineering learners' needs within teaching learning methods that include curriculum development, its implementation and evaluation. ESP courses are underway to be developed if the learners' needs are to be fulfilled. This research will be useful in ESP, ESL, ELT and EFL context and will offer different ways to carry out more research in this genre.

The growing demand for the specialized English for mechanical engineering has been increased. The mechanical engineers have been required to perform their professional activities such as presentation, meetings, briefings, participation in the international conferences and business arena. The university institutions offer ESP course to assist the learners to prepare for a future professional career. In response to these needs, the aim of this research is to investigate the perceived needs of mechanical engineering students, the teachers, and stakeholders of institution to provide an guided approach to ESP course design for mechanical engineering students. A descriptive research method is adopted for this evaluation study. The purpose of this study is to explore the needs of ESP course design at mechanical engineering study program of Tridinanti University. The participants involved in the study were students, teacher and stakeholders of institution. The results of this study showed the mechanical engineering students, the teachers and stakeholders of institution perspectives were positive towards by taking into consideration needs analysis for designing ESP course to provide the appropriate materials for academic and professional purposes.

The purpose of the study was three-folds: to evaluate students' needs, to evaluate the psychometric qualities of the developed questionnaire, and to explore the possibility of writing a textbook based on the insights gained from the study. To evaluate the students' needs, wants, and lacks (Hutchinson and Waters, 1987), a questionnaire was administered to 225 students at Sharif University of Technology when they took their final exams. Students' scores were made use of with respect to one dimension of the questionnaire which dealt with students' self assessment of themselves most of which correlate positively with their final scores. Another purpose of the study was to evaluate the questionnaire itself in terms of its statistical properties. In other words, a construct validation study was conducted. There were distinct parts to this questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation was applied to see if different needs were neatly delineated by the questionnaire (see Hatch and Lazaraton, 1991 for limitations of PCA). Having applied a CFA with PCA using a three-factor solution, it was seen that items loaded on the expected factors with high loadings. In terms of students' needs, here are the findings: Translation was not deemed appropriate. Note taking was not considered important in their future careers. Technical writing was considered to be very important. Unfortunately, the skill has been totally ignored in the English curriculum in the university.
This research reports on a survey study of 48 subject instructors, assistants, and lab assistants in engineering faculty at Ishik University in Iraq about their opinions and attitudes toward ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purpose) and ESAP related issues. The instrument used for the survey is a self-made questionnaire based on literature review. Since ESAP is driven by the specific learning needs of the language learner, the first step for ESAP course design is distinguishing the specific needs of the Subject instructors and students which will tell us the dynamics about our ESAP program. The study showed us that the effect of Advanced English to comprehend subject field courses will be limited in Engineering Faculty. On the contrary students should be provided with ESAP courses that will result in better comprehension of their subject field courses.
ESP NEEDS ANALAYSIS OF UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY OF MULTAN
The present study is focused at investigating English language needs of undergraduate engineering students in Multan. In this study effort was made to explore the English usage frequency, its significance for engineering students, their current level of English competence and their English language needs. For the purpose of finding out English language needs of the engineering students quantitative approach has been applied in this study. Data was gathered using questionnaire as data collection tool. Research population was selected from two universities for gathering data considering them the main stakeholders of this discourse community. A questionnaire was developed for the collection of data, more precisely; closed-ended questions were distributed to 120 engineering students in order to identify their English language needs and their perceptions towards the usefulness of the current English language teaching materials in use. The results showed that these students have positive attitudes towards learning English language. Furthermore, productive skills (speaking and writing) have been rated as the skills that engineering students want to develop most. Further, the study found that the current teaching materials in use do not meet students' needs hoping that the findings of this study would be the basis for designing more feasible ESP teaching materials that would meet students' needs.

It is not an overstatement to claim that the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has made a great jump in Algeria in the last decade. Moreover, designing an ESP course is one of the important steps in ESP. Entitled "Designing ESP Course for Engineers", this work aims at designing a course targeted to engineers in SAMSUNG ENGINEERING WORK SITE in TIMIMOUN. Among the main problems encountered by both teachers and engineers is the lack of adequate and appropriate ESP courses and the lack of English language teachers in general and ESP teachers in particular. The study is based on analyzing the needs of the target group (Engineers), and the evaluation of a course. The needs analysis in this action research has been conducted using different tools. The results of the study show that almost all participants (engineers) need an ESP course, with the predominant needs which are speaking and listening first, followed by reading, writing and translation as a fifth skill. They also need vocabulary related to their specific knowledge in order to deal with their jobs. Moreover, this study suggests to take into account the learners' needs, their level, the degree of motivation and the evaluation of the students' performances throughout the course as well as the evaluation of the ESP course itself.

The study aimed to identify the English language needs of engineering students from the perspective of stakeholders. The study used quantitative and qualitative methods, including questionnaires and interviews to gather data on the students' English language skills, their perceived needs, and their goals for learning English. The participants of the study were engineering students in the preparatory year (n= 894) at The Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology in Kafrelshiekh and The Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology in El-Mahala, teaching staff (n=17), and engineering employers (n=9). The study found that engineering students need to develop their English language skills to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing with equal importance among all the language skills. The study also highlights the need for developing an English course specifically for engineering students to meet their specific needs and help them succeed in their studies and careers. The findings of the study can be used to develop more effective ESP courses and curricula for engineering students, which can help them succeed in their studies and careers.
