Performance Analysis of Translucent Space Division Multiplexing Based Elastic Optical Networks (original) (raw)
2019, International Journal of Advances in Telecommunications, Electrotechnics, Signals and Systems
The required upgradation of the network capacity of the single-mode fiber which is constrained by the non-linear Shannon’s limit, and the capacity provisioning needed by the future diverse Internet traffic can be resolved by the adoption of the Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) based Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) (SDM-b-EONs). In the current work, we focus on the performance analysis of a SDM-b-EON in which translucent lightpaths are routed through the spectral super-channels over the spatial single-mode fiber(s) bundle(s) links. In regard to regeneration, we investigate three scenarios which differ in their regeneration variability level in addition to the adjustment of modulation formats according to transmission route characteristics. We conduct extensive simulations considering an online traffic case and two realistic network topologies with different numbers of (i) fibers in every link, and (ii) transceivers available within SDM-b-EON. The obtained results demonstrate that wh...

Performance Comparison of Dynamic Elastic Optical Networks with Optical Regeneration
Research and Development on Information and Communication Technology
We have investigated optical regeneration issues and application in elastic optical networks that are capable of providing dynamically optical paths with flexible bandwidths. We have analyzed the impact of optical regeneration in elastic optical networks and clarified various usage scenarios. We have then evaluated and compared the performance, in terms of the overall blocking probability and the total accommodated traffic volume, of three possible network scenarios with regeneration capability including (i) no regeneration, (ii) 3R regeneration, and (iii) 4R regeneration for practical network topologies. Numerical simulation proved that deployment of optical regeneration devices can exploit elastic optical networking to enhance the network performance for provisioning dynamically bandwidth-flexible lightpath services. It is also demonstrated that using re-modulation function while regenerating optical signals (4R regeneration) can further improve the network performance. However, d...
Split spectrum: a multi-channel approach to elastic optical networking
2012
Abstract: This paper introduces Split Spectrum, which enhances elastic optical networking by splitting a bulk traffic demand into multiple channels, when a single-channel transmission is prohibited by distance or spectrum availability. We performed transmission simulations to determine the maximum reach as a function of modulation format (dual polarization BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM), baud-rate (from 5 to 28 GBd), and number of ROADMs, for a Nyquist WDM super-channel with subcarrier spacing equal to 1.2× baud-rate.

Multi-band transmission systems have emerged as a potential answer to the limited capacity of silica based optical fiber. It is based on utilizing the complete low-loss region of optical fibers. Additionally, elastic optical networks (EON) were proposed to efficiently manage limited resources in optical networks. The selection of route, modulation format and spectrum is the main problem that requires solving to operate an EON. Understanding how linear and nonlinear impairments accumulate during propagation in an optical fibre link in essential to solve this problem. Here we preset a study on the maximum reach optical signals can propagate in a multi-band environment for a variety of modulation formats with commonly used threshold values in EON.
