A Gram-stain-negative bacterium, designated strain CBA4601T, was isolated from a seawater sample obtained off the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. The organism grew in the presence of 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl and at 20–35 °C and pH 7.0–9.0, with optimal growth in 2 % NaCl, and at 25 °C and pH 8.0. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CBA4601T was related to the genus Ferrimonas within the class Gammaproteobacteria . 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain CBA4601T and Ferrimonas marina A4D-4T, the most closely related species, was 96.9 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA from strain CBA4601T was 54.2 mol%, and the isoprenoid quinones menaquinone 7 (MK-7), ubiquinone 7 (Q-7) and ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) were detected. The major fatty acids were C17 : 1ω8c, C18 : 1ω9c and C16 : 0, and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified ninhydrin-positive phospholipid. Ferrimonas gelatinilytica sp. nov., isolated from tidal flat sediment
A novel beige-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, coccoid, motile and facultatively anaerobic bacteria, designated strain CJ24 T , was isolated from the tidal flat sediment of the Yellow Sea in South Korea. Characterization of this strain was performed on the basis of polyphasic taxonomic methods. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA and gyrB genes revealed that strain CJ24 T belongs to the genus Ferrimonas, sharing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.9 % with Ferrimonas marina DSM 16917 T . Strain CJ24 T was able to grow optimally at 30 6C, at pH 6.0 and in the presence of 2 % NaCl (w/v). As an isoprenoid quinone, menaquinone (MK-7) was predominantly identified from this strain, while ubiquinone (Q-7) was also present as a minor component. The DNA G+C content of strain CJ24 T was 60.2 mol%. The most abundant cellular fatty acids were C 15 : 0 iso, C 18 : 1 v9c, C 16 : 0 and C 17 : 0 iso. Therefore, strain CJ24 T represents a novel species in the genus Ferrimonas for which the name Ferrimonas gelatinilytica sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is CJ24 T (5KACC 17065 T 5JCM 18720 T ).

Agarivorans albus gen. nov., sp. nov., a c-proteobacterium isolated from marine animals Six bacterial strains were isolated from healthy marine organisms that were collected from the coast of the Kanto area in Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequence similarity showed that the six isolates formed a separate cluster in the c-Proteobacteria and were related to the genera Alteromonas and Glaciecola (<91?6 % similarity). The isolates were related closely to each other (DNA-DNA reassociation values of 74-93 %). The isolates had a polar flagellum and were Gram-negative, mesophilic, strictly aerobic rods that required salt for growth. Distinct phenotypic features of this group included the ability to hydrolyse agar and white pigmentation of colonies. The DNA G+C content of the isolates was 48-50 mol%. The major quinone was Q-8. Phenotypic characteristics of the isolates differed from those of members of the genera Alteromonas and Glaciecola. The name Agarivorans albus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed for the six isolates; the type strain is MKT 106 T (=IAM 14998 T =LMG 21761 T ).

Paraferrimonas sedimenticola gen. nov., sp. nov., a marine bacterium of the family Ferrimonadaceae Three strains (Mok-106 T , Mok-142 and Mok-143) were isolated from marine sediment samples collected from the coast of Okinawa Island, Japan. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, the isolates were affiliated with the family Ferrimonadaceae; Shewanella denitrificans and Ferrimonas balearica were the closest relatives, having sequence similarities of 93.7 and 93.0 %, respectively. The novel isolates shared high levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with each other (98.7-99.3 %) and the results of DNA-DNA hybridization indicated that the three strains belong to the same species. The cells were rod-shaped, motile by means of single polar flagellum and formed colonies that produced a rose-coloured pigment within 6 days incubation at 25 6C. The isolates grew in the presence of 0.5-4.0 % (w/v) NaCl and at 15-40 6C. The major fatty acids were iso-13 : 0, iso-15 : 0, 16 : 0, 18 : 1v7c and summed feature 3 (16 : 1v7c and/or iso-15 : 0 2-OH). Menaquinone-6, menaquinone-7 and ubiquinone-8 were the major quinones and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 50-51 mol%. Phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses of these isolates suggested that they belong to a novel genus and species of the family Ferrimonadaceae, for which the name Paraferrimonas sedimenticola gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Reinekea blandensis sp. nov., a marine, genome-sequenced gammaproteobacterium

A novel heterotrophic, moderately halophilic, strictly aerobic, motile bacterium was isolated from a seawater sample collected at the Blanes Bay Microbial Observatory in the north-western Mediterranean Sea. Analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence, retrieved from the whole-genome sequence, showed that this bacterium was most closely related to the single-species genera Reinekea and Saccharospirillum (95 and 94 % sequence similarity, respectively) within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The data from phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses supported the creation of a novel species of the genus Reinekea to accommodate this bacterium, for which the name Reinekea blandensis sp. nov. is proposed. Ferruginibacter yonginensis sp. nov., isolated from a mesotrophic artificial lake

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic and reddish-pigmented strain, designated HME8442 T , was isolated from a mesotrophic artificial lake. The strain grew optimally at 30 6C and pH 7 on R2A agar. The major fatty acid was iso-C 15 : 0 . The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 35.8 mol%. Strain HME8442 T was closely related to Ferruginibacter lapsinanis HU1-HG42 T (94.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Ferruginibacter alkalilentus HU1-GD23 T (93.9 %). The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME8442 T formed a lineage within the genus Ferruginibacter. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HME8442 T represents a novel species of the genus Ferruginibacter, for which the name Ferruginibacter yonginensis sp. nov. is proposed. An aerobic, mesophilic bacterium, strain JA40T, was isolated from soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls collected from Johnston Atoll in the North Pacific Ocean. The strain formed yellow-pigmented colonies on heterotrophic media. The cells were Gram-negative, non-motile, non-sporulating rods. The strain reduced nitrite to nitrous oxide, the DNA G+C content was 64 mol% and the dominant fatty acids were 15 : 0 iso, 17 : 1 iso cis7 and 11 : 0 iso 3-OH. DNA sequencing of 1457 nt of the 16S rRNA gene established that JA40T belongs in the genus Pseudoxanthomonas within the Xanthomonadaceae branch of the Gammaproteobacteria. Strain JA40T can be differentiated from other mesophilic species in the genus on the basis of its physiological and biochemical characteristics and distinctive fatty acid profile. A taxonomic study was performed on strain QM42 T , which was isolated from coastal seawater from an aquaculture site near Qingdao, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain QM42 T was a member of the class Gammaproteobacteria. Cells of strain QM42 T were Gram-negative, yellow, aerobic and rod-shaped. The strain formed a distinct phyletic line with less than 91 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest relatives with validly published names within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.9 mol%. The major fatty acids were C 16 : 1 v7c/iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH, C 18 : 1 v7c and C 16 : 0. Based on data from a polyphasic chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical study, strain QM42 T is considered to represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Gilvimarinus chinensis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. A slightly curved-rod-shaped, pink-pigmented, Gram-stain-negative, aerobic bacterial strain with gliding motility, designated SK-8T, was isolated from coastal surface water of Misaki, Japan. Phylogenetic trees generated using 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SK-8T belonged to the genus Fabibacter and showed 96.0 % sequence similarity to the type strain of the most closely related species, Fabibacter pacificus DY53T. The novel isolate was phenotypically and physiologically different from previously described strains. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH.
