The central concept is the use of real-time Z scores for the purposes of EEG biofeedback. This includes at least one channel of Z scores and all possible combinations and organizations of the Z scores. The real-time Z score invention was conceived in 1994 and created in 2002 and the decision was made not to produce a patent that would constrain the development of the real-time Z scores and instead to distribute the dll to multiple vendors and to encourage the vendors to develop their own expressions of the Z score displays and presentations without any constraints on the marketing and applications of the real-time Z scores by one vender vs another vendor. The number of subjects (N = 625), selection criteria, age range (2 months to 82 years), cross-validation tests, demographics, and other details of the Z score normative database have been published and are recommended reading for those interested in deeper details than is briefly reviewed in this paper (
Quantitative EEG and Live Z-Score Neurofeedback- Current Clinical and Scientific Context
?1?2 article discusses the relevance of quantitative EEG (QEEG) and live z-score training (LZT) to the field of mental health in general, and to neurofeedback in particular. We examine what practitioners might learn about clients when QEEG is used for assessment, and the relevance of LZT as a treatment modality. Clinicians can benefit from viewing the brain as a dynamic system, and this point of view can provide a foundation for QEEG and LZT. This approach emphasizes understanding the value of brain activation as a basis for observed symptoms and behaviors. Of paramount importance are localization and frequency information, as well as connectivity metrics. The brain can be viewed as a complex self-controlled system operating with various identifiable networks and frequencies that, when dysregulated, produce what we commonly refer to as ''disorders.''
