Changes in the railway network in Romania before and after accession to the EU (1990-2020)

Prace Komisji Geografii Komunikacji PTG

The work deals with the changes in the railway network in Romania in the years 1990-2020. As in other countries, it is characterized by regress, but to a lesser extent than in the countries of the region. The aim of the study is to indicate the size of the changes taking place in terms of four spatial levels: country, macroregions, development regions and Romanian counties. Another goal of the analysis undertaken is to assess changes in the quality of the railway network in the analyzed period. Two research hypotheses were put forward, the first one with a small impact of the EU funds on the development of the rail network, the second about the lack of impact of EU funding on changes in the quality of rail transport in Romania. In the research and data analysis, the official Romanian statistical databases on changes in the length of railway lines in individual spatial ranges for the analyzed period were used, as well as data from the „Ranking railroad, The Global economy” portal to ...

Transport in Support of the Process of Socio-economic Development of Romania, After 1990

Procedia Economics and Finance, 2014

The working paper aims to highlighting the major evolutionary milestones, for each transport mode, and also the imposed obstacles and the advantages offered by the national economy, in the development transportation in Romania, starting with 1990 year until now. Each mode of transportation cyclic evolution presents expansions and recessions phases. However, each new evolution cycle, of a transport mode, does not start from "zero", but from the accumulated information (inherited) from previous cycle that will developed, refined and diversify in the future expansion phases. Given the interdependence with the other branches of the national economy and, by its very character, in the public interest, in the last two decades, the transports supported and, also, influenced the evolutions and improvements of the Romanian economy and also, of the entire Romanian society. In addition, the development of different modes of transport has been uneven in recent decades, without taking into consideration the consequences of these evolutions on collateral fields. Some important connections between transportation and economic branches or between transport infrastructures and the regional development represent, also, important aspects presented in this working paper.

Freight Transports in Romania, between Desires and Achievements. Past, Present and Future

Procedia Economics and Finance, 2015

Our paper goals are to highlight the main elements that marked Romanian Freight Transport development between 2000 -2014 and to define some short term action directions. By using statistical, analytical, comparative and descriptive methods, study is an investigation of the defining elements of freight transport in Romania, on the three main modes of transport -road, rail and inland waterway. The results and the conclusions of the study highlight significant differences between what Romania aimed to achieve in the analysed period and what has succeeded. At the same time, our paper, by pointing out the weaknesses of the national strategy of development of the transport infrastructure, tries to present the main action directions that can increase the efficiency of decision -making and implicitly, the significant improvement of transport infrastructure.

Management of Urban and Regional Rail: Case Study Bucharest

LOGI – Scientific Journal on Transport and Logistics, 2020

The capital of Romania is the main railway hub of the country. As such, the railway network around the capital is quite extensive, with main cities around it being directly connected by rail. Despite this, there are no regular train services for commuters, similar to other large European cities. This paper aims to analyze the current state of railway passenger transport in the region surrounding Bucharest, to highlight the weaknesses of the network and to present a guideline for the implementation of an efficient commuter service. 100 stations in and around the city were evaluated with regard to their degree of accessibility (DoA), defined as the location of the station relative to the nearest settlement. Train frequency, travel times and journey costs were determined for each line originating in Bucharest. These variables were compared to their road equivalents to highlight the differences between these two modes of transport. Low train frequency and the remoteness of many stations...

The development of goods transport in Romania

2008

Transport represents an essential aspect of the society economic activity, organized with the object of overcoming the distances. As for the transport of goods, one may say that it essentially shows a significant progress in the last three years; it's a development based on the revaluation of road transport advantages in the prejudice of the railway transport of goods.

The potential of intermodal transport projects in Romania

Proceedings of the International Conference on Business Excellence, 2017

The transport infrastructure sector is facing challenges related to the decarbonisation, financing and integrated developments, which need to be overcome so it can gain a competitive advantage among the strategic economic sectors. Known as a major pollutant, with 23.3 % of the total EU-28 GHG emissions in 2014, one of the transport policy objectives is to lower this percentage, by focusing on innovative solutions and modal shift (

The role of railway in the European transport policy

2013

285 and [7]. This policy is based on regulated competition and connecting various modes of transportation, the reduction of congestion points in traffic systems and multi-modal transportation. With an increasing and more obvious pollution problem, growing ecological awareness and implementation of specific laws to protect the environment, advantages of rail systems became transparent. The rail system, as a system with high capacity, the least air and water pollution, solvable noise and vibration emission problem and the least space usage, might be competitive with other modes of transportation. Railways of Serbia are a part of the European railway network. Two European traffic corridors pass through Serbia: the Danube Corridor VII and the road-railway Corridor X (Figure 1). The European Union has enacted various legislative measures aimed at achieving the opening up, integration and harmonization of national railways to form a European railway network. Harmonization of the national ...

On the rail-based freight corridor between CE and SEE regions and the main obstacles on Romanian territory

Transport Problems, 2013

The project "Freight and Logistics Advancement in Central/South-EastEurope - Validation of trade and transport processes, Implementation of improvementactions, Application of co-coordinated structures" (in short - FLAVIA) is carried outunder the Central Europe – Cooperation for Success Programme, cofunded by theEuropean Regional Development Fund. One of the main objectives of FLAVIA project isto consolidate a logistic corridor from Central Europe (CE) to the South-East Europe(SEE) and the Black Sea Region, based on rail and inland waterways intermodaltransport. In this paper we discuss the partial outputs of FLAVIA project, mainly relatedto the identified actual status of rail-based intermodal transport and trade obstacles of thefreight flows on the Romanian territory and the used methodology. Several operationaland long-term measures to improve the trade and intermodal transport are listed, considering the advantages of the geo-strategic potential of Romania location, conn...

Analysis of the Public Transport Provision in Suceava-Botoșani Urban Area (Romania)

Journal of Urban and Regional Analysis, 2020

Having a major economic and social role, public transport is an important component in the process of sustainable development of a city. The paper aimed to study the public transport at metropolitan and regional scale evidencing how two major urban centers of Romania, Suceava and Boto?ani, connect via public transport with the rural settlements in their metropolitan areas. The metropolitan supply of public transport was analysed starting with publicly available data on the routes in 2014 for both Botoșani County and Suceava County, located in the North-Eastern side of Romania. The routes’ spatial disposition and daily frequency is analysed for road and rail public transport. The resulted mappings showed that road public transport is well distributed in the metropolitan territory for both urban centres, but there is still almost 4% of the rural population that does not have direct access to this public utility service. The rail public transport covers only a small amount of the studi...
