This article studies a little-known aspect of the Portuguese Inquisition’s social impact: its role as a locus of social mobility among the internal officials of the tribunals. We analyze the careers of some of the lay officials continuously in service in the metropolitan courts (bailiff, the jails wardens, pantryman, doormen, guards and solicitors), and establish a timeline of the different modes of concession and transmission of these offices, from the remuneration of services to sale at public auction. Finally, we seek to understand what impacts the possession and / or the real exercise of the office had in the lives of these men and their families beyond the mere nutritional function and their obvious role as a certification of pure blood.
