Impact of Plug-In Electric Vehicles on the Distribution Grid
Abstract-Pollution due to greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas and excessive dependence fossil fuel has been a huge threat in the sustainable development of the transportation sector. So, there is a need for a solution that can tackle this situation. Electric vehicles can be one of the most promising remedies to tackle this problem. They provide energy conservation and environmental protection. Electric vehicles are propelled by an electric motor powered by rechargeable battery packs. They have both positive and negative impact on the power grid. For instance, in order to evaluate the impact on electric vehicles on demand profile, one needs to know about 1)charging process of electric vehicles, 2) amount of electrical energy required, 3) amount of power required, 4)state of charge of the battery. This paper extracts the comparison between the load profile of the distribution system without EV's and with EV's connected. Also it shows the voltage unbalance caused by EV's interconnection with the grid.
Impact of Electric Vehicles and Photovoltaic and Wind Generators on Distribution Grid
Majlesi Journal of Energy Management, 2018
Unreliability in continuous production poses challenges for deploying renewable sources in a real-time power delivery system. Output intermittency, and reliability issues can be potentially addressed by employing suitable combination of the two RE sources technologies (PV and WT) together with the use of an energy storage system, such as battery energy storage system (BESS), as a type of power balancing medium. Different storage options could address this unreliability issue, but they consume electrical energy and create significant costs and carbon emissions. An alternative is using electric vehicles and plug-in electric vehicles, with two-way power transfer capability (Grid-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Grid), as temporary distributed energy storage devices. In this paper, first the benefits of two solar and wind resources is investigated by each other in a weak Low Voltage Distribution Grid and It is shown that these two resources together can eliminate the challenges of generating stochastic nature of renewable resources. Also, the behavior a weak power distribution grid at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) in the presence of a photovoltaic generator, wind and electric vehicle has been analyzed. Finally, transient stability has been analyzed in different fault conditions. Simulative analysis is performed in the DIgSILENT PowerFactory software.
Integration of electric vehicles into the electricity grid for maximum utilization of wind energy

We propose a model for the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the grid power system in Japan. The potential of the switchover from conventional vehicles to EVs and the incurred charging loads for the EV fleet were evaluated based on the results of a Japanese road traffic census. Furthermore, an EV battery operation model was incorporated into the production cost analysis model, which is capable of determining the optimal electricity supply and demand, considering the existing interconnector power flows. The potential economic and environmental contributions of EV charge and discharge controls, with the ultimate goal of realizing the introduction of a massive renewable energy source in the future, were also evaluated. We found that EVs can greatly contribute to expanding the use of renewable energy and reducing system cost by charging and discharging not only at the owner's home but also at his/her workplace.
Energy Storage
The presence of electric vehicles (EVs) directly affects the low voltage electric distribution networks. This article depicts the anticipated problems that occurred when it draws power from grid to vehicle in the charging scenario and critically analyze EV as dynamic storage while feeding the power grid in the discharging status (vehicle to grid). The merits and demerits by deploying the mass integration of EVs into the distribution network are comprehensively investigated. Moreover, the challenges of integrating renewable energy resources and deployment of EVs, for the efficient, reliable, and uninterruptible power flow are covered. The future scopes of electric mobility industry including wireless EV charging, vehicle to home, cloud to home charging are also highlighted. This comprehensive review is highly beneficial for the research community and design engineers working in this area.
Plug in Electric Vehicles in Smart Grid
The Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) are the Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). PEVs will dominate the transportation in the personal mobility mode and in the automobile market by 2030. Widespread adoption of PEVs brings potential, social and economic benefits. The focus on promoting use of electric vehicles in road transportation is very essential to meet the climate change targets and manage the ever hiking prices of fast depleting fossil fuels. However, there are lots of uncertainties in the market about the acceptability of PEVs by customers due to the capital and operation costs and inadequate infrastructure for charging systems. The penetration level in the market is not encouraging, in spite of incentives offered by Governments. Manufacturers are also not sure of the market, even though predictions are strong and attractive. Major manufacturers, however, are already ready with their plans to introduce electric vehicles to mass market. The use of PEVs has both technological and market issues and impacts. Series of research works have been reported to address the issues related to technologies and its impacts on political, economic, environmental, infrastructural and market potential aspects. Works dealing with suitable infrastructure such as charging stations and use of smart grids are reported. These steps are aimed to bring down the capital and operational costs that are comparable to the costing of conventional transport vehicles. The penetration level of PEVs in transportation will accordingly increase and keep the climate targets met and conserve fossil fuels for use in other economic segments. An overview on these issues is presented in this chapter.
The Impact of Electric Vehicles on Smart Grid
Acta Electrotechnica et Informatica, 2021
This publication examines the impact of electric vehicles on the grid. Electric cars are becoming more and more popular in the world. The annual sales quantity of electric cars in the world has an upward trajectory which has some serious implications on the electric grid as well. Both passenger and freight transport are being influenced by this current trend. In addition to various methods of transport, electric cars have the potential to transform traditional grids into smart ones. The primary objective of this study is to examine to what extent the voltage at the nodes changes when electric cars are connected to the network and also sets out to provide us with some overview of the effects on active power loss in the network.
Modelling the Impacts of Large-Scale Penetration of Electric Vehicle on Electricity Networks
Electric vehicles (EVs) offer several significant potential economic, social and environmental benefits -reductions in the transport sector's current very heavy reliance on petroleum-based fuels, improvements in urban air quality and reductions in transport sector greenhouse gas emissions. The batteries of electric vehicles, however, need to be recharged and electrification of transport systems will increase electricity loads, which could potentially place stress on some electricity distribution systems. The actual impacts of EV recharging on local distribution systems will depend on a number of factors and on the timing of the recharging events in particular. The results of the several studies have attempted to assess the potential impacts that EV recharging will have on local distribution networks suggest that coordinated managed charging of EV demand could actually have a significantly positive impact on distribution system reliability.
