Could Galectin 3 Be a Good Prognostic Factor in Endometrial Cancer?
Diagnostics, 2020
Galectin 3 is a modulator of several basic biological functions. It may be involved in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes—risk factors of endometrial cancer. The study involved 144 patients, after abrasion due to postmenopausal bleeding. Galectin 3 concentrations were quantified in serum by multiplex fluorescent bead-based immunoassays. Median serum galectin 3 concentrations revealed significant differences between FIGO III and IV vs. FIGO I and II patients. Statistically higher concentrations were reported for patients with lymph node metastases compared to patients without it (p = 0.001) as well as in patients with lymphovascular space invasion compared to patients without LVSI (p = 0.02). No statistically significant differences were observed for median of galectin 3 levels depending on the surgical procedure (laparoscopy vs. laparotomy, p = 0.0608). Patients with galectin 3 levels exceeding the median value were characterized by overall survival being shorter by 11.9...
Immunohistochemical expression of galectin-3 in carcinoma of uterine cervix
International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences
Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancer among women worldwide, second to breast cancer. It’s difficult to diagnose in the early stage due to subtle and non-specific symptoms. Galectin-3 is increasingly being recognized as an important regulator of a broad range of cancer cell activities including cervical cancer. Its expression depends on the tumor grade which signifies its role in progression of the disease and prognostic significance.Method: The present study was conducted in department of pathology, Pt. B. D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak on 60 cases of histo-pathologically diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix. Immunohistochemical (ICH) expression of marker ‘Galectin-3’was assessed in all biopsy specimens. Results: Galectin-3 expression was 1+ in 83.3% cases and 2+ in 16.6% cases of grade 1 cervix carcinoma. In grade 2 carcinomas 55.3% showed 1+, 42.1% showed 2+ and 2.6 % cases showed 0 galectin -3 expression. Further, 70% of grade III cases showed a sco...
Role of Human Galectins in Inflammation and Cancers Associated with Endometriosis
Biomolecules
Galectins are a family of β-galactoside-binding proteins that contribute to multiple cellular functions, including immune surveillance and apoptosis. Human galectins are also important regulators of inflammation, making them a research target for various inflammatory diseases and tumorigenesis associated with pro-inflammatory conditions. This review focuses on the involvement of human galectins in modulation of inflammation and in the pathophysiology of endometriosis and endometriosis-associated neoplasms. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. Galectins-1, -3 and -9 were found to be overexpressed in ectopic and eutopic endometrium of females with endometriosis compared to those without endometriosis. These findings suggest galectins’ role in the progression on endometriotic lesions and their potential use as diagnostic biomarkers and/or targets for therapeutic approaches. Galectins-1, -3, and -9 have also been implicated in the development of endomet...
