Business resilience is the ability to quickly recover from difficulties and continue operating by applying innovative strategies. The article aims to document the resilience level of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Pacific towns of Southern Leyte, Philippines, and capture its causal determinants amid the health crisis using descriptive correlational research design. Using a research-made questionnaire, cross-sectional and primary data were collected from a random sample of MSMEs and were summarized using statistical measures. The significant determinants of the resilience of MSMEs were determined using the Chi-square test for independence via cross-tabulation of categorical data. Results depicted that, on average, MSMEs during the pandemic are "resilient", particularly in their situational awareness, keystone vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity as they combat the disruption of the health crisis. The Chi-square test reveals that age, civil status, business job position of the MSMEs' personnel, and the estimated monthly income of the enterprise are the highly significant factors that affect the resilience of MSMEs during the health crisis. In particular, younger age, single status, and owner of the enterprise are more active and creative in digital business technology, which increases their resilience in response to challenges brought about by the pandemic. Moreover, enterprises with lower incomes do adopt innovative business strategies that improve economic resilience and profit. Furthermore, the study suggests that enterprises must consider strategic plans and goals to enhance their capability in risk management as they will face future crises.
BUILDING BUSINESS RESILIENCE: HOW SMALL STARTUPS SURVIVE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
2018
The study examines resilience-building strategies used by small startups to survive economic uncertainty, focusing on financial, operational, and strategic adaptability. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative analysis of resilience strategies from case studies and quantitative data on startup performance from industry reports. Major findings indicate a strong correlation between financial reserves and operational stability (r = 0.68, p < 0.05) and highlight the importance of networking (β = 0.45, p < 0.01) and resource optimization (β = 0.53, p < 0.01) in enhancing resilience. Additionally, startups adopting both flexible financing and technology showed a 40% improvement in crisis adaptability. The study concludes that startups can increase resilience by strengthening financial reserves, expanding networks, optimizing resources, adopting digital tools, and diversifying revenue streams. Purpose: Whether an occurrence is natural disaster and man-made calamity, one thing is sure, it is not expected and at some instances, it cannot be avoided by any means. Just like other entities, businesses are vulnerable to these risks and it would surely cost the resources and profit of these enterprises. This study aimed to unravel the enterprise continuity and resiliency factors among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Region XII in the Philippines. Design/methodology/approach: The survey utilized an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) with 450 respondents Findings: Results showed that there were five elements that emerged: disaster preparedness, institutional planning and control, external relations, stakeholder's support, disaster mitigation and support investment. Research limitations/implications: Although most of the enterprises surveyed have an idea how to respond to calamities and mitigate disastrous situations, this research argues that a solid policy framework might be drawn through the local government units concerned to institutionalized this effort.
The Business Survival of Micro-enterprises in Facing Economic Uncertainty
Journal of Governance and Integrity
The current economic uncertainty, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, has affected the global socio-economy. In Malaysia, to curb the spread of Covid-19 viruses, the government has implemented the Movement Control Order (MCO). This action has caused many SMEs (including micro-enterprises) not to be able to continue their operations as usual, mainly due to cash flow problems, operational instability and supply chain disruptions. Micro-enterprises are a significant contributor to local economic development. Hence, business continuity strategies are essential for these enterprises to continue and survive in the market. The government has introduced various methods to support these businesses. Meanwhile, virtuous strategic planning and management can improve the management's governance and integrity in making accurate decisions to achieve their goals. The implementation of digital marketing can upsurge the sale of micro-enterprises. This study intended to examine the relationsh...
Conceptualization of SMEs’ business resilience: A systematic literature review
Cogent Business & Management, 2021
Attention for business resilience research in the academic world has increased considerably, despite fragmented literature on definitions, measurements, and of variables influencing the concept. Therefore, there is a need to take stock of current knowledge on the areas and structure them to lay the foundation in this field. We also give due attention to the resilience of SMEs in a highly vulnerable setting (i.e., developing countries), as the nature of this settings requires resilience research attention (in terms of rate of recurrence and complexity of disruptions). We deployed a well-structured systematic review procedure. This paper offers (1) an overview of SMEs resilience literature from 2000 to November 2018 comprising 118 articles, and (2) special attention, within that overview, to developing countries. This review concludes that resilience literature is very much varied in its definitions and measurements, and is inconclusive about its influencing factors. Furthermore, little resilience research has focused upon the context of SMEs in developing countries, which is perhaps surprising given the contribution made by these businesses in such a setting. Based on the review results, we describe distinguishing features of resilience; give options to extend the theoretical foundations of research into resilience in the future. This study attempts to identify the roles of different coping strategies (pivoting and persevering) and entrepreneurial orientation that could interact and affect SMEs’ financial performance in the context of a sudden and pervasive external crisis. For this purpose, we applied asymmetric configurational theorizing and methods. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis was applied to a dataset combining survey results and financial reports of 201 Finnish SMEs. Our analysis showed that, as a response to the COVID-19 crisis, it was more common to apply pivoting than the perseverance strategy. Entrepreneurial orientation was positively related to pivoting, growth, and subjective performance but not related to profitability. Firms that had faced more problems tended to apply the perseverance strategy, and their financial performance was weaker. We also found combinations of factors that led to poor performance as non-entrepreneurial firms that faced major problems consistently perfo...
The Impact of the COVID-19 Crisis on Growth-Oriented SMEs: Building Entrepreneurial Resilience
2021
This study explores how the COVID-19 pandemic has forced Flemish growth-oriented entrepreneurs to build entrepreneurial resilience. We rely on a research framework that consists of a “challenge-reaction-learning loop” to empirically investigate how entrepreneurial resilience is built in times of the COVID-19 crisis. To investigate this complex entrepreneurial learning process, we use data that have been collected during the first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. By using several datapoints, we could identify (1) the specific challenges growth-oriented firms are facing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis; (2) how these entrepreneurs reacted to these challenges; and (3) what they learned during the first and second wave of the pandemic and how they perceive the future. By making this entrepreneurial learning process explicit and dividing it into an iterative “challenge-reaction-learning loop”, this study is relevant for all entrepreneurs, as it contains several interesting les...
Factors Impacting SME Business Resilience Post-COVID-19
Sustainability
The ability of an organization to respond to a crisis with agility is vital for business leaders to maintain business continuity. Our paper examined how business owners responded to the challenges caused by the pandemic. Using online surveys for data collection, we investigated a critical agility issue of supply chain risks through understanding the interrelationship of various business capability factors. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was applied to a sample of 220 participants who were owners of micro, small, and medium businesses in Western Australia. The findings showed that the businesses’ efficiency, financial strength, and flexibility in sourcing affected the businesses’ supply chain risks negatively. More support for labor productivity, asset utilization, waste elimination, financial reserves, portfolio diversification, and credit access needs to be introduced to enhance the resilience of the business supply chain. This paper is novel, as we used the data coll...
