Resource Management in Grid Computing: A Review

As technology advances and the popularity and dependence on internet increases by the day, new ways of finding faster and cheaper solutions to computational problems are sought. This has lead to the development of a new concept known as grid computing, which is a type of distributed computing, heterogeneous in nature because it makes an aggregated use of resources distributed over a large geographical area to solve problems usually complex ones on a larger scale. Since it involves using resources from different places, from different ownerships and with different individual qualities, it requires a complex resource management process for its proper functioning. This article provides a brief overview on grid computing and its resource management processes, important factors considered in resource management, comparison of different resource management processes and future outlook of grid computing and its resource management.
A taxonomy and survey of grid resource management systems for distributed computing
There have been many projects focused on network computing that have designed and implemented resource management systems with a variety of architectures and services. In this paper, an abstract model and a comprehensive taxonomy for describing resource management architectures is developed. The taxonomy is used to identify approaches followed in the implementation of existing resource management systems for very large-scale network computing systems known as Grids. The taxonomy and the survey results are used to identify architectural approaches and issues that have not been fully explored in the research.

Grid Computing-An Emerging Technology that enables large- scale resource sharing
In the last few years there has been a rapid exponential increase in computer processing power, data storage and communication. But still there are many complex and computation intensive problems, which cannot be solved by supercomputers. These problems can only be met with a vast variety of heterogeneous resources. The increased use and popularity of the Internet and the availability of high-speed networks have gradually changed the way we do computing. These technologies have enabled the cooperative use of a wide variety of geographically distributed resources as a single more powerful computer. This new method of pooling resources for solving large-scale problems is called as grid computing. Grid computing is a form of distributed computing in which an organization (business, university, etc.) uses its existing computers (desktop and/or cluster nodes) to handle its own long-running computational tasks. Grid computing combines computers from multiple administrative domains to reach a common goal, to solve a single task, and may then disappear just as quickly. Grid computing is managed by Global Grid Forum (GGF). Grid includes various protocols, topologies, standards and layers for implementing grid related applications. Grid is a generalized network computing system that is supposed to scale to Internet levels and handle data and computation seamlessly. Grid computing an extension of distributed computing supports computation across multiple administrative domains which enable it to be distributed over a local, metropolitan or wide area network. Grid infrastructure is a large set of nodes geographically distributed and connected by a communication. As, the users can access the resources simply and transparently without knowing where they are physically located, there are many challenges involved for constructing the grid environment. Grid computing is a collection of heterogeneous resources that is highly dynamic and unpredictable. It is typically used for solving scientific or technical problems that require a large number of computer processing cycles or access to substantial amounts of data. Various resource allocation strategies have been used to make resource use more productive, with subsequent distributed environmental performance increases. The user sends a job by providing a predetermined time limit for running that job. Then, the scheduler gives priority to work according to the request and scheduling policy and places it in the waiting queue. When the resource is released, the scheduler selects the job from the waiting queue with a specific algorithm. Requests will be rejected if the required resources are not available. Grid Computing based Resource Utilization System and its performance Evaluation
In today's world although the speeds and the capacities of the processors continue to increase, resource intensive applications are proliferating as well. With grids, program previously hindered by constraints on computing power become possible. On a typical college or university campus, many computers sit idle for much of the time. These idle computers can be volunteered into the grid thereby providing significant processing power for users. Thus a system is developed which is a kind of homogeneous computing to volunteer computers into a grid. This system will have the ability to perform higher throughput computing by taking advantage of many networked computers to model a virtual computer architecture that is able to distribute process execution across a parallel infrastructure. This system will provide the ability to perform computations on large data sets by breaking them down into smaller ones, or provide the ability to perform many more computations at once than would be possible on a single computer, by modeling a parallel division of labor between processes. For this it will make use of the unused resources of the disparate computer usually the desktop computers in the network. Results have been shown in terms of reduced time elapsed while performing various image processing tasks considering different number of clients in a grid.
