Editor's Annual Report: 2013-2014
Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, 2014
Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (JMFT) is strong and poised to become stronger. Through a high-quality, supportive review process, we have whittled away at our remaining backlog and selected excellent articles that reflect our commitment to the best in family therapy research, theory, practice, and education. Nothing happens by accident. We must remain hungry, work hard, and avoid stuffing our laurels into a pillow and resting on them. To remain fresh and vital, the flagship journal of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) relies on the strength and dedication of many people, so what we achieve is an inside job. Both new and established scholars are a big part of our success. This annual report is really about the work and dedication of these fine people. I remain impressed with the quality of our reviews. Good reviewing, like good therapy, is both art and science, and I have seen the positive effect on the final articles that appear in JMFT. One way we have demystified the review process for emerging and future scholars is our JMFT doctoral student apprenticeship review program. This program educates and supports a greater sense of ownership of JMFT among doctoral students in Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE)-accredited programs. The idea is that a doctoral student essentially becomes a fourth reviewer of a submitted JMFT journal article. Any such doctoral student wishing to read a JMFT submission and write and submit a "shadow review" is encouraged to do so as long as a program faculty member nominates the doctoral student and agrees to read and provide feedback on his or her review. In the last year, 22 doctoral students from 13 COAMFTE-accredited family therapy programs have served as shadow reviewers for 33 total articles. Generally, the quality of the reviews of these doctoral apprentices has been excellent and often equal to that of seasoned editorial board members, perhaps because of the mentoring they receive from their faculty mentors and because of the pride and effort that these doctoral apprentices put into their reviews. (Several apprentice reviewers have told me that they spend about 10 hr preparing and writing their reviews.) I have taken note of the quality of the reviews of several of these apprentice reviewers and have subsequently (after they have graduated) appointed them to the JMFT editorial board. We plan to continue this program in the coming year. I will be sending a separate e-mail to all COAMFTE-accredited doctoral program faculty members to solicit their nominations for apprentice reviewers. Also, if any doctoral student would like to initiate contact with a faculty mentor, and follow up with me at piercy@vt.edu, this works, too. Dr. Thorana Nelson, JMFT's Virtual Issues Editor, produced two virtual issues for JMFT in the past year. One relates to ethics and the other, supervision. Also, another, on process research in family therapy, was recently guest edited by Megan Oka and Ryan Seedall of Utah State University. Another, on common factors, guest edited by Eli Karam, is presently in production. Virtual issues are collections of previously published JMFT articles on a particular topic. These collections serve as a professional development resource for practicing clinicians, MFT program faculty and students, and scholars seeking key articles on a particular topic. Our video abstract program is going well. When an article is accepted, we attach with the acceptance letter another letter inviting the author to submit a video abstract, a short (3-5 min) video podcast in which the author expands on some of what he or she wrote in the discussion section, summarizes the findings, or possibly reflects on its meaning. More than anything, a video abstract allows the reader to put the author's face and name together and for the author to breathe life into his or her article through the video. So far, eight authors have submitted video abstracts, a link to which we place next to the article link on the online JMFT Web site. Relatedly, we developed an "Introduction to the Journal" podcast that sits handsomely on our Web site. In it, we have tried to capture some of what makes JMFT distinctive.
