State of Innovation Report 2022 - Innovation Industry Report
2022
This academic report explores the benefits and challenges of outsourcing Research and Development (R&D) activities in companies' innovation strategies. The report contends that companies can achieve significant benefits, including cost reduction, quality enhancement, and faster time to market, by outsourcing their R&D activities. It also examines the different roles played by R&D teams in the innovation process and how outsourcing can support these roles. The report highlights that most companies use a combination of internal and external sources for new product development, including strategic partnerships, to fill gaps in their capabilities. A survey of more than 1,700 global executives conducted by Innovolo in 2021 found that successful innovators tend to adopt a balanced approach to innovation, utilizing both internal and external resources. The survey was conducted by a team of researchers in the innovation industry, sponsored by Innovolo. Its objective was to understand the types and sources of innovation used by companies in the current business environment and compare companies that conduct R&D in-house only, outsource it all, or take a hybrid approach. The survey used Innovolo's online survey panel, a representative sample of the global business community from diverse industries, geographies, and company sizes. The survey methodology ensured a representative sample of participants. In conclusion, this report offers valuable insights into the role of R&D outsourcing in companies' innovation strategies. By examining the benefits and challenges of outsourcing, the report highlights the need for companies to adopt a balanced approach to innovation and leverage both internal and external resources for new product development.
