International Perspectives on Women and Work in Hotels, Catering and Tourism
Hotels, catering and tourism (HCT) is a large and fast-growing service sector, with an average female participation of 55.5 per cent at global level and up to 70 per cent at regional level. They are employed in a wide variety of roles, including as cleaners and kitchen staff, front-line customer service workers and senior management. The recruitment, retention and promotion of talented women for technical and managerial leadership positions will be necessary to meet the future skills and productivity requirements of the sector. Moreover, women will comprise an even larger proportion of the sector"s client base as more will travel for business and leisure. This too will have an impact on gender equality in the recruitment of employees.

This paper considers women's employment in four countries with reference to their participation in the labour force in general and in the hospitality industry in particular. Comparison is made of the factors which affect women's employment, including the legislative environment and access to training. National factors which help or hinder women "s opportunities are contrasted. The paper then draws on the results of a crossnational survey and case studies of hotels in each country to demonstrate differences and similarities in women's employment patterns. The survey shows that employers have only a limited awareness of employment legislation based on European Directives and that stereotyped attitudes still act as a barrier to the types of jobs that men and women carry out in hotels. Recommendations are made for national and company level policies and approaches to achieve equality of opportunity.

The hospitality sector is still very traditional and male-dominated in terms of values, it is segregating and discriminatory according to gender, not only horizontally but also vertically, the wage differences between men and women are critical, and many of the jobs are stigmatized. Indeed, despite women representing most of the workforce in hospitality, such numerical dominance is not reflected in the leadership positions they occupy. Traditionally, men and women occupy different roles in the hospitality industry: women are more often assigned functions that are in line with their social roles and that represents an extension of their domestic tasks so that it is easier to find women in-room service or cleaning. The Challenges And Issues Of Women In Hospitality Industry
The hospitality industry has shown tremendous projection in addition of women workforce as of the present scenario and numerous opportunities in the hospitality industry is the reason for the choosing the career in this field. The professional courses has been taken up by number of women learners to acquire the necessary skills and techniques concerned to the industry requirements. The hospitality industry overall faces a worldwide shortage of trained hospitality staff .The career development in hospitality industry can be a good decision for women as according to a maxim ‗women are more hospitable as compared to the men'. As the women employees moves upward into supervisory and higher levels positions, faces many challenges like gender issues,family life balance, long working hours and work culture. The hospitality industry imperatively have to underst and that, factor of diversit y among the task force can boost interactions among the employees and the organization's overall output. An Analysis of Gendered Employment in the Portuguese Tourism Sector

Tourism is crucial for the Portuguese economy. But what are the numbers behind tourism employment in Portugal? This article analyzes employment in two tourism characteristic activities, namely accommodation services and travel agencies and tour operators. A matched employer-employee data set is used. Despite having higher levels of education, women are more prevalent in low qualified jobs, while men are more likely to hold executive and management positions. Moreover, women's pay is consistently lower. It is also concluded that the accommodation sector and the travel sector have very distinct characteristics. It is suggested that future studies analyze the sectors in a disaggregated way.

Although the U.K. ho.spita~~ty industry is characterised by a predomina~tfy female workforce, women are nof well represented at management levels. With reference to previous research findings, the results of a survey of young people who completed Hotel and Catering Management degree courses at Oxford Polytechnic in 198.5, 1986 and 1987 are examined, in order to explore similarities and differences in the employment orientations, transition from education to employment and early career experiences of women and men. The evidence suggests that, white changes in the industry and rhe increasing importance of format credentials challenge gendered custom and practice, it may be particularly difficult for women to achieve equal opportunities in a female-dominated industry because they are less likely to be recruited, developed and rewarded as career staff with senior management potential.
Gender Differences in Job Satisfaction in 5 Star Hotels of North Cyprus: Descriptive Analysis

The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of job satisfaction of the hospitality employees and provide empirical evidence whether gender differences exists in relation to the job satisfaction of male and female hospitality employees in 5 Star Hotels in North Cyprus. The study instrument used was the short form of Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) which measures job satisfaction using 20 facets of the job. A total of 248 hospitality employees agreed to take part in this study. Data was analyzed using statistical program SPSS 17 The study indicate that male hospitality employees, as compared to female hospitality employees, have a higher level of satisfaction with overall job satisfaction

Gender diversity and the status of women in the hospitality industry has been a concern among both management practitioners and academicians. In recent years, there has been remarkable progress with respect to women closing the gender gap in managerial positions in the hospitality industry. Yet there still seems to be what might be called "patterns of employment ghettos," wherein certain departments are predominantly filled by men and others are predominantly staffed by women. This suggests that gender diversity may be lacking in the hospitality industry.
In this paper, attempt is been made to emphasize the importance of the tourism industry in female employment. Tourism work is particularly attractive to women and help variety of them (young, singles, mothers, divorced or older ones) in creating decent employment. Tourism employment gives women ability to balance work and family life. The authors concluded that most women in tourism industry have only limited access to middle and high-level managerial position. The main objective of this paper is to determine the tourism employment trends, emphasizing the role and position of the female labour force that dominates within the gender structure of the overall workforce in tourism. The paper focuses on the role of tourism and hospitality in generating female employment in Bauchi metropolis .This however is achieved through an experimental study designed for twenty selected tourism enterprises through the questionnaire method of data collection. Recommendations were raised as relates to the benefits of tourism employments to the female folks. The intention of this paper is to spread a better understanding of the position and opportunities of the women's employment in tourism.
