2024, International Journal of Academic and Applied Research (IJAAR)

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been plagued by numerous challenges, including political instability, corruption, and environmental degradation, which have hindered the region's development and integration into the national mainstream. Despite its significant economic contribution to Nigeria, the region's people have long been marginalized and excluded from the benefits of the region's natural resources. This study examines the importance of national integration and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for promoting unity, cohesion, and social cohesion among diverse ethnic groups. The study also explores the role of political parties in promoting national integration and addressing the region's developmental needs, including corruption, poverty, and environmental degradation. The findings suggest that addressing these challenges will require sustained efforts by government and civil society to promote sustainable development in the region, including infrastructure development, economic empowerment programs, and cultural exchange and dialogue. Ultimately, this study argues that national integration and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region are critical for promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Nigeria as a whole.
