FACTORS INFLUENCING THE USE OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT) BY LIBRARY PERSONNEL IN COLLEGE LIBRARIES IN OSUN AND OYO STATES, NIGERIA

With the advent of information and communication technologies (ICT), college libraries struggle to maintain credibility in the provision of library materials for research, teaching and learning through the acceptance and use of information technology. This study therefore investigated the factors influencing the use of ICT by library personnel in Colleges in Oyo and Osun states, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. A population of 240 was selected for the study. Total enumeration (census) sampling was used to select the sample of 240. 240 Questionnaire was administered to the library personnel and 193 questionnaires were retrieved giving a response rate of 80.4%. The study revealed that various ICT facilities were readily available in the selected libraries; that the level of ICT literacy among the library personnel in the selected academic libraries was mostly excellent in the areas like computers, internet, telephone, and scanners. However there were various factors affecting the use of ICT by library personnel in the selected academic libraries, which are shortage of ICT professionals, inadequate funding, and inadequate power supply and obsolesce of ICT facilities. The study concluded that shortage of trained ICT professionals and funding are crucial factors affecting the use of ICT. The study recommended among other recommendation that relevant ICT literacy education should be embedded in the training of library personnel in college libraries; library managers can meet with management to reach a power supply agreement with the power holding company, in terms of the number of hours of power supply during library hours and the rest hours can be supplemented with inverters or generating set.

The adoption and Usage of Digital Library Resources by Academic Staff in Nigerian Universities: A case Study of University of Ilorin

2015

This study intends to identify and analyze factors influencing low adoption and usage of Digital Libraries (DLs) to enable a deeper understanding of reasons for the low adoption and usage of DLs among academics in Nigerian universities. Various theories and models aimed at explaining factors that influence adoption and usage of technologies have failed to provide clear reasons for the low adoption and usage of DL services. In order to fill this identified gap, the present study proposes an interpretive qualitative case study research approach using University of Ilorin as a case study. The study further describes research strategy that will serve as a framework for the research design, research setting, data collection instruments and analysis.

2014

This study investigates assessing Computer Technology Acceptance and Use with a particular reference to Undergraduate Students in University Libraries in Nigeria, using Otunba Gbenga Daniel Library, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State of Nigeria as a case study. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of registered undergraduates students in the library. Random sampling technique was used to select a sample of one hundred (100) students. The main instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Data were analyzed, using descriptive statistics, consisting of tables of frequency and percentage. The findings revealed that computers and scanners 74 (100%) were the available IT tools in the library under consideration, while the least respondents 17 (23%) indicated that Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) terminals and multimedia devices, representing 22 (29.7%) were also available but not in active use. Computers and scanners were acceptable and use in the University library with response rates of 67 (90.5%) and 46 (62.2%), multimedia devices 28 (37.8%) and interactive whiteboard 10 (13.5%) were partially acceptable and use, while 26 (35.1%) reported that OPAC terminals were not in active use. The study concluded that Information Technology (IT) policies, governing the computer technology acceptance and use were lacking. The study also revealed that the respondents use the computer technology as a platform to support their Teaching, Learning and Research (TLR) work; which enables them to gain speedy access to other sources of information particularly those available online. Adoption of Information and Communications Technology in Polytechnic Libraries

This study assessed the level of information and communications technology use in polytechnic libraries in Ghana. The study used the survey method and questionnaire as the data collection instrument from five polytechnic institutions in Ghana. The study revealed that the Polytechnic Libraries use one form of ICTs or the other. Also, some of the libraries provide ICT-based services. The challenge of funding, lack of ICT infrastructure, low bandwidth as well as misunderstanding between library staff and ICT department were identified. It was recommended that an ICT policy for the libraries to guide them in the acquisition and use of ICTS in their libraries be developed. Also, librarians in the Polytechnic Libraries should be trained in various technological applications and trends in information service and delivery to enhance the services they provide. Finally, the Polytechnic leadership must prioritize the acquisition and use of ICTs in their libraries and make budgetary allocation that could support that drive.

Use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTS) among Library Staff in Selected Tertiary Institutions Libraries of Katsina State - Nigeria

Information and Knowledge Management, 2013

The study determines the availability and use of information communication technologies facilities by library staff in four (4) selected tertiary institutions libraries of Katsina State. Survey research was adapted with population of 151 library staff and a random sample size of 120 staff in four (4) selected Tertiary Institutions Libraries of katsina state. The study revealed that 104 staff of various categories responded and 189 computers (desktop, flat screen and laptops) were available in institutions libraries understudy. On the problems militating against effective use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTS) facilities by library staff, findings showed that erratic power supply represented by 42% (29%) respondents was the greatest problem and this was followed by inadequate computers which were represented by 15 (22%) respondents. Recommendations were proferred eg non professional staff should be trained up to paraprofessional and professional status, while modern computers be procured by the concerned tertiary institution (among others).
