In the same time is to notice that the Albanian banking system occupies almost 85% of the financial system showing the weak role of the capital markets. In this study we use a regression model like the ordinary least squares analysis to test the relationship between the dependant and independent variables using quarterly data from the first trimester of 2007 until third trimester of 2014 with a total of 31 observations. As dependant variable we use the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) while as independent variables we use: return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), the non performing loans (NPL) and bank size (Total As...

These determinants are categorized into two groups, internal and external factors. The objective of the study is to determine the factors that affect the profitability in commercial banks, to show how they differ according to groups of the banks and making some recommendations which can help the management. This research studies the factors that affect the profitability of the banking system in Albania during the period 2012-2017.The specific factors taken in the study are divided into two groups: the specific banking factors (internal), and the macroeconomic factors. The dependent variable used in the study, to measure Bank Profits, is Return on Equity (ROE). The empirical findings show that, when ROE is used as a dependent variable, all bank specific variables are negatively and significantly related to profitability. That being said, there is the exception of the liquidity factor (Liquid assets over short term liabilities) and bank size which has a positive.
The Effect of Capital Structure on the Performance of Albanian Banking Institutions
Abstract This study aims at finding a relationship between the market efficiency and capital structure of Albanian financial institutions. The study establishes a model to measure the effect of explanatory variable chosen as ROA, total deposit to assets, total loans to assets and total loans to deposits on return on equity (bank efficiency). It is found that only return over asset has a positive and significant effect on bank profits, an increase in ROA brings an increase in bank efficiency. While other variable after some re-run regression function, most of them were insignificant. Keywords: Return on Assets, Return on Equity, Total Deposit to Assets, Loans to Total Deposits, Albanian banks.
An assessment of bank profitability: Evidence from Albania
International Journal of Applied Economics, Finance and Accounting
Although the financial sector in Albania follows a fluctuating trend, the average return on assets has significantly improved during the last few years. To boost profitability and ensure long-term survival in this area, banks must concentrate on the factors that affect profitability. Various types of research offer conflicting results on the impact that macroeconomic factors have on bank profitability. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive perspective on the theoretical and empirical research of bank profitability in the Albanian banking system, including its components and the variables influencing the choice of how to effectively achieve profitability. More specifically, this study determines how macroeconomics impacts the profitability of Commercial Banks, mainly focusing on the effect of GDP growth, inflation, and real interest rate on the financial performance of second-level banks in Albania between 2011 and 2020. To achieve this goal, a multiple regre...
European Scientific Journal, 2016
This paper examines the relationship between regulatory capital and credit risk within the Albanian banking sector. We estimate an equation which tries to capture the relationship among regulatory capital, nonperforming loans, profitability, total assets, liquidity and the level of growth in the GDP. The data is grouped and the analysis is performed in accordance with three banking groups. The grouping of the banks is in accordance with their size in the system and reflects the grouping used by the central bank for regulatory purposes. The model developed can be used to forecast required levels of CAR and it suggests that in the Albanian banking system, as well as for each bank group separately, the relationship between CAR and NPL is negative, the relationship between CAR and assets is negative for an unchanged level of regulatory capital, the relationship between CAR and profitability is positive, whereas the relationship between CAR and liquidity is negative. The effects of the c...
