Incarnation of Ict in English Language Teaching
2014
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the fundamental component of today’s technological society. People are eased to accomplish the complicated and sophisticated problem with the aid of technology. The teacher and the taught have to upgrade their soft skills for survival in this high–tech era as technology has perpetuated the field of education on a par with the sector of trade and transaction. Though technology minimizes the role of a teacher to a mere facilitator, it can be used effectively to bridge the lacuna that exists between the conventional and modern methods of teaching as it is an effective tool to enhance both teaching and learning process. The highlight of this article is to deal with the pertinent questions in the field such as how far is the ICT useful in higher education? What is the role of the ICT in teaching English language? What kind of methods and approaches could be used to overcome the students' problems? Can it empower student community? Can...
Innovations in Teaching English Language – A Perspective of Technology Usage
Abstract The role of a teacher has a significant impact on any student from elementary to Higher Education. In this age of Technology and Globalization, even today some of the teachers use the out-dated concepts in their pedagogy. In fact, the situation is like Gen X teachers (need not be the age but even the mind set) are teaching to Gen Y and Gen Z, without actually understanding the expectations of a student of today’s times. Teachers handling subjects like English, History, and Geography etc. in a traditional way of using pedagogy ultimately results in the present generation showing their disinterest towards these subjects. For a subject like English, innovative teaching makes the student a better learner rather teaching the subject in a boring manner. As students are exposed to technology from their formative years, to develop interest in the English language, a teacher should effectively integrate technology to enhance Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing skills while teaching the language. In this article, the author suggested several innovative ways of usage of technology in the pedagogy while teaching English language. A focus was given on the need for learning the language and the role of a teacher in making the subject interesting using technology at a level of Post-Graduation in Management Studies, as students will be judged based on their communication skills during their campus placements, though they will be working later in different domains like Finance, Marketing, Human Resources etc Key words: Technology, language, teacher, integrate, pedagogy, English
The theory and practice of using technology in English teaching
Our daily routine cannot be imagined without the use of computers and smart devices in our private and professional lives. The use of the information technology in teaching English is no novelty because technology has been around us for a long time. With the development of the ICT, a vast number of educational platforms and software that can be used in education have been created. Technology in the classroom is present today within the educational centres and using technology in language learning has become the perfect complement in reaching proficiency and fluency, and English courses accompanied by technological support are the most effective and attractive for students who want to be successful in their learning. Even for students who are spending time on their computers playing video games, using computers during the lesson will attract their attention and they will try to be successful and compete with the others. The ICT is one of the most important tools for the improvement of the teaching and studying at the same time. For teachers, it is a professional resource, a way to share their knowledge and as a source of useful texts that can be used during a lesson. On the other hand, for the student who is studying English as a foreign language, the use of ICT guarantees a lot of possibilities for effective communication and it is a type of virtual community that allows him or her to exchange information, ideas, and experience with other students. As well, it helps them make projects and exchange materials. The use of technology in English teaching, helps students develop and use their skills, knowledge, and understandings by making and presenting the curriculum. All of this is possible because of the interactive and dynamic nature of the ICT. As, Jeremy Harmer wrote " a word innovation means something new, which means new ideas to change things for better " , the ICT is new and closer to the generations of students nowadays and all the teaching methods should be made according to their interest in order to be successful in teaching the language. But, we should be aware of the fact that all methods are not 100% successful, as Harmer claims in his book " if we look at all the language teaching methods which are used all over the world by different teachers at different levels, we cannot say that all of them are 100% successful. Therefore, it is very important to keep looking and searching to find ways to make teaching and learning better. " In the past decade, many analyses have been made based on the use of ICT in teaching and according to most of them, we can conclude that there are more advantages than disadvantages. The use of technology in English teaching, as some analysis show, can contribute in: improving reading and writing abilities, develop listening and speaking abilities, supporting student collaboration, their creativity, individual learning, as well as the repetition of already acquired knowledge. As Dudney and Hockly (2007) have stated, the ICT is, in fact, an interactive and collaborative medium that allows the creation of text and activities that can easily be shared in public which helps students discover the language they are learning and its use. Many English teachers might disagree with these advantages and they usually have doubts that the ICT might not be useful in the process of teaching English since they think computers may only distract student's attention during the lesson. But, there are educational platforms and software which are created in order to avoid this happening and teachers should be informed that there a software such as Net Nanny (www.netnanny.com) which limits and controls students' access to other content during the lesson. Techno-Pedagogic Practices For Enhancing English Language Skills
i-manager’s Journal on English Language Teaching, 2011
The effervescent progress of technologies in the modern era demands new pedagogical techniques in the process of effective and successful teaching and learning. The prospective teachers who are competent with technical skills and have command over language alone can produce articulate students. Prospective teachers, when they enter the real classroom, are supposed to mould any type of clay into an anticipated form. Therefore, they must be trained by the teacher-educators in such a way that they, in future, should be able to cultivate pupils' inquisitiveness in learning through all senses in order to improve the level of language skills. The advent of multimedia outdates the traditional teaching method but its adoption is done at a snail's pace. Undoubtedly, multimedia technology plays an effective role in the process of teaching and learning language skills. Multimedia tools act as cognitive enhancers. They augment the learning experience of the prospective teachers and enable them to concentrate on the development of more sophisticated cognitive skills. The powerful cognitive ability of a learner reflects his or her profundity in language skills and effective communication. It is possible that they can hone their language skills greatly and effectively through technopedagogic practices. But the second language learners' language skills are seen to be left less developed in the absence of multimedia tools. Hence, it is the responsibility of teacher educators to strive hard with all their verve and vitality to make accessible to these learners the latest techno-pedagogic strategies to remove all the road blocks to their acquisition of the level of competence expected of them.

Technology is no longer a fringe course enhancement of interest to only enthusiastic 'technophile' teachers, learners and managers, but rather, it has an importance for everyone concerned in language teaching. So, it is a crying demand of today's time to prepare students for a technological era that awaits them. It is, therefore, the expectations from the parents, administrators as well as from students that the teachers will use the modern technology to sophisticate his teaching method. As language teaching professionals life is also intertwined with technology: for materials preparing, administrative purposes, storage, grading, professional communication, research articles publications, photocopies, scanning and so on. In teaching and learning of English language, the latest technologies such as computers, the internet, electronic dictionary, email, blogs and mobile phones plays a very effective role. Computer technology and Internet are new devices used in education methodology. Without the technological support classroom activities or other official works cannot effectively. That is why, the newest technological devices presently used by the language teachers have to be introduced to all with a view to implementing these in our classrooms as well as in other work. The study was conducted during the period from
