English proficiency needs to be essential for academic achievement. The quality of English instruction in high schools is closer to that of a primary school, which is insufficient to enable students to advance academically on their own. Thus, English proficiency is considered as part of the weighted process. This is a descriptive correlational study designed to find a significant relationship between junior high school students' English proficiency and academic achievement. Results showed that there is indeed a great correlation between the two variables in the study with a p-value of 0.00776, hence the null hypothesis was hereby rejected. With this, the findings could serve as guidance for English teachers in terms of data on the degree of students' language proficiency and academic success. Students are likewise urged to look into other elements such as learning styles, instructional approaches, education-learning technologies, exposure to the English language, as well as other contextual and environmental factors that may influence students' academic achievement and English proficiency. Following these recommendations would not only benefit schools by satisfying the demands and expectations of students while simultaneously improving the institutions' overall retention and school academic rates.
The Relationship between English Language Proficiency and Academic Achievement of Students

By employing correlational research design, this study examined the extent to which preparatory school students’ proficiency in English language predicted their overall academic achievement. From the population of 132 grade 12 students, 44 (male=22, female=22) students were systematically sampled from social and natural science streams of three sections. Three research questions guided the study. Research instruments namely, English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) and Academic Achievement were used. Academic achievements, like any attainable goal in life, do not come by chance. Men, money and materials (resources) must be combined in an ideal manner to ensure its success. A total number of thirty (30) pupils; eighteen (18) boys and twelve (12) girls, with an average age of 12 years, sampled from the Junior High School two class of Amoakrom, Nyame-bekyere and Ningo basic schools, and eight (8) teachers from Basofi-Ningo circuit in the Assin North Municipality were used for the study. Questionnaires of thirty (30) items each were administered to both teachers and pupils. The study reviewed sex, age and form (class) for the pupils, and sex and age for the teachers. For the pupils, 60% were males; the majority (43.4%), were aged between 11 and 14 with 36.7% recording sibling size of between 7 and 9. The study investigated the influence of English proficiency on Junior Secondary School Achievement in Social Studies in Osun State, Nigeria. The research was a correlational type. The population for this study consisted of all the Junior Secondary Schools in Osun State, Nigeria. A total number of 100 students were randomly selected from two public Junior secondary Schools in Ife East Local Government that comprises 50 students in each of the schools. Data were collected with two set of questionnaires administered on the 100 students that were sampled for the study. The first set of questionnaire was on "English Language Proficiency Test" (ELPT) and the second set of the questionnaire was on "Social Studies Achievement Test" (SSAT). Two hypotheses were generated for the study and were tested using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient statistical method at 0.05 level of significant. The results showed that language proficiency were significantly related to the achievement in Social Studies. Thus, it was recommended that English language skills should be handled with high priorities by teachers and also that government should encourage the teaching of English language skills in our schools by providing adequate support or resources.

English, the Language of Instruction (LOI), has fallen victim of blame of some scholars as the cause of poor performance in secondary schools in Tanzania. The blame is directed at English strongly up until recent years (2010 and 2011) when the results of national examinations have been extremely worse. It seems, the public presumes that there is relationship between students' academic success and their abilities in the LOI. This paper sought to investigate whether there is relationship between English Language Proficiency (ELP) and academic performance in Tanzanian secondary schools. The data used were obtained by administering an ELP test and a review of students' reports, and were quantitatively analyzed using a computer software, Statistical Package for Software System (SPSS) version 18. The study revealed that there is a significant weak positive relationship between ELP and students' academic achievement. The relationship was significant in English and insignificant in other subjects which were investigated. On the basis of the findings of this study, it is argued that academic success is a function of several variables and not only proficiency in the LOI. It is therefore recommended that the responsible authorities should invest in improving English language proficiency among students since ELP is positively connected with academic success.

This article underscores the English language Teaching methods with their influences on the English language subject's academic performance of the public primary school students of Kilolo District in Tanzania. Using the descriptive research design, the study was conducted at Ukumbi Primary School, Kilolo, Iringa region to standards four and seven. The secondary data were collected using the documentary reviews from the Standard Four and Standard Seven national examinations results of English language subjects requested from the head teacher, whereas the primary data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and introspection techniques which were purposefully administered to the Standard Four and Standard seven classes to check onto the methods of teaching English language to public primary schools and their influences on the students' subject academic performance which seems to promote or deteriorate the learners' interests in English as the medium of instruction. The target sample sizes in Standard Four and Standard Seven were randomly selected for an unbiased information search. The data collected were summarized, organized, recorded-and presented using a variety of tools such as tables, charts, distribution and graphs with the help of Excel and MS Word features which helped the interpretation of the findings to get the relevant information of this article. The findings of the study show that most of the students have problems with oral communication, and pronunciation including sound, stress, and intonation as the English Language teaching methods used hardly care about their learning. The findings recommend that primary school teachers should be given special training on the English language teaching methods that favour the development of communicative abilities in primary school students.

This study examined the extent to which Nigerian secondary school students' proficiency in English predicted their overall academic achievement in Oyo and Osun States of Nigeria. From the population of students in the two states, 400 students were proportionately sampled from eight randomly sampled secondary schools. Two Research questions guided the study in which two Research instruments namely, English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) was used. The performance of the respondents in the ELPT was correlated with the students' annual scores in cores school subjects-Mathematics, Biology and English using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Linear Regression Analysis at .05 level. The results showed that English language proficiency of the students has a significant positive relationship with their overall academic achievement and that there is a significant impact of English language proficiency on students overall academic achievement. Based on these findings, it is recommended that efforts should be geared towards making the Nigerian students proficient in English as a way of improving their academic performance.

The current study is intended to examine the effect of time of learning, English teachers' characteristics, teaching and learning process characteristics, socioeconomic context and students' characteristics in the teaching of English at the elementary schools on the students' achievement of English at the first year of lower secondary school. Two kinds of research designs were implemented, an ex post facto and a tracer study. Therefore, the data were collected in two ways in order to (1) discover the students' English achievement at the lower secondary school and (2) observe the prior English instruction at the elementary school.
