A semantic-based platform for the digital analysis of architectural heritage
Computers & Graphics, 2011
This essay focuses on the fields of architectural documentation and digital representation. We present a research paper concerning the development of an information system at the scale of architecture, taking into account the relationships that can be established between the representation of buildings (shape, dimension, state of conservation, hypothetical restitution) and heterogeneous information about various fields (such as the technical, the documentary or still the historical one). The proposed approach aims to organize multiple representations (and associated information) around a semantic description model with the goal of defining a system for the multi-field analysis of buildings.

The process of diagnosis, intervention, conservation, restoration and maintenance of built cultural heritage requires complete and accurate knowledge about tangible as well as intangible aspects of their past and present. Comprehensive and precise knowledge about built cultural heritage structures, their functionality, location, environment and any sudden disturbance needs to be digitized for long lasting preservation of the resource. Discrepancy or scarcity of information can lead to errors and even irrecoverable damages. Both human and natural disasters are destroying cultural heritage objects, buildings and sites which have great value and significance in human history. This paper is aimed to provide a comprehensive discussion of state of the art knowledge representation and knowledge management solutions, specifically designed for improving built cultural heritage information preservation. This paper suggests that semantic digitization of built cultural heritage data is the best way forward. Traditional standards in built heritage metadata schemas lack the description of key aspects of 3-D modeling while, 3-D modeling standards such as geographical information system (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) do not provide sufficient representation of historical data related to a built heritage (BH) structure. This paper proposes a model for representing architectural as well as historical data relevant to a BH site, using semantic web technologies and building information modeling standards.
Ontology-Based Web Tools for Retrieving Photogrammetric Cultural Heritage Models
ISPRS - International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
A key challenge in cultural heritage (CH) sites visualization is to provide models and tools that effectively integrate the content of a CH data with domain-specific knowledge so that the users can query, interpret and consume the visualized information. Moreover, it is important that the intelligent visualization systems are interoperable in the semantic web environment and thus, capable of establishing a methodology to acquire, integrate, analyze, generate and share numeric contents and associated knowledge in human and machine-readable Web. In this paper, we present a model, a methodology and a software Web-tools that support the coupling of the 2D/3D Web representation with the knowledge graph database of Xlendi shipwreck. The Web visualization tools and the knowledge-based techniques are married into a photogrammetry driven ontological model while at the same time, user-friendly web tools for querying and semantic consumption of the shipwreck information are introduced.
Semantic Mapping of Architectural Heritage via Artificial Intelligence and H-BIM
Representation Challenges
Starting from the virtual photogrammetric 3D reconstruction, this work proposes a classification method, based on Artificial Intelligence, allowing to semi-automatically characterize the digital models of existing architectural heritage in terms of material mapping and/or decay condition. The obtained data, once classified, is used and transferred in BIM environment, so to favor the construction of informative models rich in analytical content. The proposed approach is described with reference to the significant case study of the Chiesa del Carmine in Pisa, for the study and restitution of the liturgical and decorative apparatus, as part of a large-scale research project, still underway, on the reconstruction of the tramezzo screens for the churches of the Mendicant orders.
The Role of Knowledge-Based Information on BIM for Built Heritage
Advances in Informatics and Computing in Civil and Construction Engineering, 2018
Information about historic buildings is extensive and fundamental for maintenance, preservation, and restoration purposes. However, a common problem is lack of standardization and documentation updating. This work aims to gather 3D BIM model of historic buildings with their knowledge-base through a formal ontology. A terrestrial laser scanner was used to collect geometrical data. The resulted point cloud was delimited by Regions of Interest (ROI) then downsized and segmented. The selected case study is the Ballroom, part of the Pampulha Architectural Ensemble designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. This building, located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, has a unique, sinuous and irregular shape, recently listed as World Heritage site by UNESCO, rising its documentation importance both locally and worldwide. The CIDOC-CRM (International Committee for Documentation-Conceptual Reference Model) and FRBRoo (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records-object oriented) is the source for create the building ontology, later connected to the model. The proposed methodology shows that linking geometric and semantic database into a BIM environment can improve heritage documentation.
An Ontology for Architectural Heritage: Historical Figures and Organizations
An Ontology for Architectural Heritage: Historical Figures and Organizations, 2022
The goal of the article is to present one of a total of seven ontologies in the project for the Semantic Modelling of the Bulgarian Pre-and Revival houses. The ontological representation of historical and contemporary figures and organizations concerning the residential revival architecture will be considered.

Digital models in this field are evolving from an aesthetic simulation of reality, or, rather, a representation of the visual perception, to a more complex model: an information aggregation core. The investigation presents a research panel oriented to enhance the digital survey products-point clouds, meshes, 3D models-to be used as an intelligent visual archive assigning structured knowledge contents to artefacts' geometry. The implemented case regards the Temple of Venus and Rome. Research, in progress, has been developed by the following steps: 1) Subdividing the artefact geometry into subregions; 2) Developing the consolidation ontology for a few restoration classes; 3) Assigning (manually) to each artefact subcomponent, namely a mesh sub-region, a "smart label" including a link to its consolidation ontology instance. The aim is to combine the potential of VR visualization with ontology reasoning systems.

This paper describes the context and the proposal for the extension of Building Information Modelling to built heritage in order to enhance information management during the investigation and restoration activities. The core of the presented model is the integration of a BIM-based modelling environment and a knowledge base developed by means of ontologies, in order to represent all the semantics needed for a comprehensive representation of the historical artefact. To test its features, the model has been applied to the real archaeological investigation process of the Castor and Pollux temple at Cori, Italy.
Cultural Heritage Resources Profiling: Ontology-based Approach ACM Reference Format
Cultural heritage (CH) resources are very heterogeneous since the information was collected from vast diversity of cultural sites and digitally recorded in different formats. With the progress of 3D technologies , photogrammetry techniques become the adopted solution for representing CH artifacts by turning photos from small finds, to entire landscapes, into accurate 3D models. To meet knowledge representation with cultural heritage photogrammetry, this paper proposes an ontology-profiling method for modeling a real case of archaeological amphorae. The ontological profile consists of all needed information to represent a CH resource including typology attributes, geo-spatial information and photogrammetry process. An example illustrating the applicability of this profiling method to the problem of CH resources conceptualization is presented. We also outline our perspectives for using ontologies in data-driven science, in particular on modeling a complete pipeline that manages both the photogrammetric process and the archaeological knowledge.
