Going Far or Staying Close? Transnational Mobility among Southeast Asian Students in Islamic Studies

This article discusses eleven Southeast Asian students’ transnational mobility in order to obtain higher education at an Islamic university in Jakarta. A life story approach has been used and semi-structured and interviewee-oriented interviews have been carried out in the field, as well as on the internet. The focus is not only on the students’ individual experiences, such as educational background, strategies in mobility, prevailing life conditions, educational objectives, and future plans, but also on why they chose international Islamic studies in Jakarta and how they evaluate the education offered there. Gender constitutes an overall empirical and analytical aspect of this article, taking into account the prevailing gender order, or norm, in the students’ homelands and families, as well as gender regimes, or relations, in the educational and social environment in Jakarta. Navigating Academic Pursuits in the Middle East: Insights for Indonesian Muslim Students

This study provides information for Indonesian Muslim students who want to study in the Middle East. The Middle East is a major hub of Islamic knowledge, with a rich Islamic culture, customs, and teachings. Studying in this location allows students to expand their grasp of Islamic ideas and values, connecting theoretical and practical applications in their daily lives. The Middle East is known for its renowned scholars who provide hands-on learning experiences and mentorship, contributing to intellectual and spiritual growth. Students also benefit from substantial academic resources such as famous universities, libraries, and Islamic literature and manuscripts collections. This presentation's technique included considerable research, personal experiences, and encounters in Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey. The goal is to motivate and encourage Indonesian Muslim students to pursue their academic goals. In the end, seeking knowledge in the Middle East necessitates determination, endurance, cultural adaptation, and a dedication to personal and spiritual growth. Travelling Islam – Madrasa Graduates from India and Pakistan in the Malay Archipelago

The phenomenon of travelling religious traditions has attracted the attention of various scholars, but a differentiated understanding of its nature and impact is still lacking. This essay addresses the transnational and transregional impact of educational traditions in Islam in the South-South direction. It traces the impact of two education networks based in South Asia on Islamic learning in South East Asia. Both the modernist institutions of the International Islamic University and the conservative Deoband schools together with the affiliated Tablighi Jama'at have made significant headway in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and beyond. The case study argues that the impact is far from unidirectional and more multifaceted than often assumed. It is largely shaped by the social and cultural experience of local society and driven by its needs, rather than by a transnational agenda.
