The nature conservation sector within Australia is dominated by the government sector. The degree of dominance in Australia is not necessarily exhibited in other countries, in particular the United States. The degree of dominance is suggested to be, in part, a product of the institutional framework that nature conservation is undertaken within. The institutional framework along with the characteristics of the goods and services produced shapes the range and type of activities undertaken by the private sector. The range of constraints faced by the private sector within Australia differs from those faced in other nations. In this paper some of these differences are identified. The implications are examined by reference to institutions and the resulting incentives in the United States and the United Kingdom in particular. The paper concludes with suggestions for policy strategies to mobilise the nongovernment nature conservation sector.
Exploring motivations for volunteers in nature conservation to inform local policies
2015
Nature conservation at a local level is characterised by high involvement from volunteers. Meanwhile, the recognition of their potential and capability to use local knowledge to inform nature conservation policies and actions is lacking. In this paper we explore their motivations for participation in nature conservation activities and compare these against the goals of policy initiatives that support local projects. Using four case studies, we apply a neo-endogenous development framework and the principles of sustainable development (SD) to demonstrate the capabilities for local communities to manage their natural resources. The study suggests that a better understanding of the motivations of volunteers in nature conservation and the creation of opportunities for them to participate in local policy making would positively influence local planing policies.
Private Sector Conservation Enterprises in Australia
2003
The role of the private sector in the provision of nature conservation benefits is currently supported by Federal and State Governments through a range of measures including the allocation of grants for onground works, and tax deductibility for donation of assets to not-for-profit organisations. This support has led to the proliferation of private sector conservation enterprises; however little research effort has been devoted to gaining an understanding of the nature and scale of this sector.
Conservation and landscape maintenance in Germany: Past, present, and future
Biological Conservation, 1973
Three main sources of landscape maintenance and nature conservation in Germany are identified: the British landscape garden, the official conservation activities, and a private association of nature park promoters. Among their achievements are the German Nature Conservation Act of 1935, the
Motivations, Training and Supervision of Volunteers in Conservation
2007
Volunteers can fulfill a role in conservation. In this preliminary study, the role of volunteers in conservation and ecological monitoring in the United Kingdom was studied using three approaches: personal participation; a focus group; and interviews. Research method strengths and weaknesses are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided. Notable areas for future study are volunteer training, motivation and supervision.

Present Environment and Sustainable Development, 2015
In Romania there is a legislation that regulates different aspects of the protection and administration of natural areas- from the way they are being established to the way permissible activities in and around these areas are being regulated. Nevertheless, based on studies released by different interested forums, the core issue has been identified to be the poor informing of the population concerning the importance of protecting the biodiversity and its role in ensuring a support system of life and in developing socio-economical systems. The presence of the inhabitants on the natural areas and the activities they conduct have a great impact on the natural environment, thus making their involvement in protecting the biodiversity extremely important. The general public needs to become more aware of the fact that the preservation of nature does not constitute a unique, self-defeating purpose, that requires the saccrifice of all means, and that the presence of a reservation in their comm...

In recent decades, to the conservation of species-rich hay meadows throughout Europe has been given major attention. Yet, those habitats are at risk mainly due to intensification or abandonment, even in the countries where extensive traditional farming still exists. The member states still face difficulties on different levels when implementing EU policies. In this paper we (i) compare the implementation of EU conservation policies, (ii) analyse the gap between scientific knowledge and knowledge of public administration and (iii) follow the collaboration between institutions for nature conservation and for agriculture in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg and Romania. We applied a comparative case study design and methods, analysing five aspects for each case: (1) public administration structure, (2) management of protected areas, (3) monitoring of habitats and species, (4) reward systems and (5) stakeholders’ awareness. The results demonstrate that even though the struct...
