Fin de Siècle Mexican Novelists (original) (raw)

The Post-Revolutionary Mexican Novel (Graduate Seminar)

The Post-Revolutionary Mexican Novel Following the bloody Revolution of 1910 (1910-1917), Mexican leaders and intellectuals strove to create a feeling of national unity across a divided population. One key aspect of post-revolutionary nationalism was the desire to achieve economic modernity through the twin projects of official mestizaje and industrialization (Lund, The Mestizo State). This class looks primarily at how Mexican authors engaged topics of race and modernity through the written word. Through our readings of various novels, we will approach many of the key debates that permeated Mexican society throughout the early and mid-twentieth century.
