Tidal Energy as a Potential Renewable Energy Resource (original) (raw)

The phenomenon of rise and fall in the ocean waters, called tides, is due to the attractive forces between the celestial bodies; Sun, Earth and the Moon. When the ocean water rises to a maximum extent, it is called spring tide and when they fall off to the lowest possible extent, it is called neap tide. With progress in technology, the usage of electric and electronic devices is exponentially increasing and there is a need to produce extra power other than the existing, in order to meet the future demands. Tidal energy can be considered as one of the best existing source of renewable energies. Unlike the wind, solar, thermal energy etc., tidal energy is something that has a long term perspective and it can be forecasted more accurately. Tidal energy is clean and not depleting. Because of these features it is unique and suitable to use it as a power generating source in the future. There are various types of tidal power plants across the world with varying tidal elevation. Also, the method of conversion of tidal energy into electrical energy is site specific. But generally, the method followed for extracting energy from tides is similar to the conventional hydroelectric power plants. In this paper, the tides at some locations across the world and along the Indian coast, tidal power plants across the world, resource allocation of tidal power plants, advantages and disadvantages of tidal power will be reviewed from the literature.
Current trends and prospects of tidal energy technology
Environment, Development and Sustainability
Generation of energy across the world is today reliant majorly on fossil fuels. The burning of these fuels is growing in line with the increase in the demand for energy globally. Consequently, climate change, air contamination, and energy security issues are rising as well. An efficient alternative to this grave hazard is the speedy substitution of fossil fuel-based carbon energy sources with the shift to clean sources of renewable energy that cause zero emissions. This needs to happen in conjunction with the continuing increase in the overall consumption of energy worldwide. Many resources of renewable energy are available. These include thermal, solar photovoltaic, biomass and wind, tidal energy, hydropower, and geothermal. Notably, tidal energy exhibits great potential with regard to its dependability, superior energy density, certainty, and durability. The energy mined from the tides on the basis of steady and anticipated vertical movements of the water, causing tidal currents, could be converted into kinetic energy to produce electricity. Tidal barrages could channel mechanical energy, while tidewater river turbines can seize the energy from tidal currents. This study discusses the present trends, ecological effects, and the prospects for technology related to tidal energy.

It briefly discusses each method and provides details of calculating tidal power generation and energy most effectively. The paper also focuses on the potential this method of generating electricity has and why this could be a common way of producing electricity in the near future.
Using tidal energy as a clean energy source to generate electricity
Young Scientist, 2018
The potential of electric power generation from marine tidal currents is enormous. Tidal currents are being recognized as a resource to be exploited for the sustainable generation of electrical power. The high load factors resulting from the fluid properties and the predictable resource characteristics make marine currents particularly attractive for power generation and advantageous when compared to other renewable energies. Moreover, international treaties related to climate control have triggered resurgence in development of renewable ocean energy technology. Therefore, several demonstration projects in tidal power are scheduled to capture the tidal generated coastal currents. Regarding this emerging and promising area of research, this paper reviews marine tidal power fundamental concepts and main projects around the world. It also report issues regarding electrical generator topologies associated to tidal turbines. Moreover, attempts are made to highlight future issues so as to index some emerging technologies mainly according to relevant works that have been carried out on wind turbines and on ship propellers.
Research Progress in Tidal Energy Technology- A Review
Technical journal, 2017
coming into the picture and extensive academic and industrial research is being conducted for the development of related technologies. It is expected that Renewable Energy will be able to replace fossil fuels in the near future. Tidal current energy is one such concept that is attracting a lot of interest from the developers and researchers all over the world. It is a form of hydrokinetic energy extracted from the water flow in the tidal channels. Such flow takes place due to the relative motion of the gravitational fields of the moon, sun and earth [iv] as depicted in Fig. 1.
Tidal Energy As Emergent Energy Source: A Review
Materials Engineering eJournal, 2019
Due to the high degradation of coal and fossil fuel, moving from conventional energy sources to renewable energy sources is not the option, it is a necessity if we don’t want to sacrifice our comfort in terms of using electrical energy based equipment / machinery. Now a day, wind and solar energy have already shown their enormous potential as energy sources throughout the world, but there are some other renewable sources i.e. geothermal, biofuel, biogas, biomass, hydropower (small), tidal power etc. which can stand their positions in the competitive market of renewable energy (with wind and solar energy). This paper exhibits the present scenario, availability and future potential of tidal energy in Indian power sector as well as India’s positions about the application of tidal energy in the global power sector.

Tidal power along tidal shores has been used for centuries to run small tidal mills. Generating electricity by tapping tidal power proved to be very successful only in the last century through the tidal power plant constructed in 1967 in La Rance, France. This used a large barrier to generate the sea level head necessary for driving turbines. Construction of such plants evolved very slowly because of prohibitive costs and concerns about the environmental impact. Developments in the construction of small, efficient and inexpensive underwater turbines admit the possibility of small scale operations that will use local tidal currents to bring electricity to remote locations. Since the generation of such electricity is concerned with the tidal energy in local water bodies, it is important to understand the sitespecific energy balance, i.e., the energy flowing in through open boundaries, and the energy generated and dissipated within the local domain. The question is how to tap the tidal...
