La grottesca combinazione audiovisiva di un pastiche parodistico di danze: l’allestimento musicale di "Sedotta e abbandonata" (original) (raw)

Italian Film Music, 1950s-1970s, 2023

Abstract

After his success with "Divorzio all'italiana" (1961), Pietro Germi returned to direct a comedy set in Sicily with "Sedotta e abbandonata" (1964), in which the narrative pretext is an old Italian law that allowed for reparative marriages after sexual violence. However, according to Germi, the main aim of the film is to portray the customs and prejudices of Sicilian society. The music, composed by Pietro Rustichelli, Germi's regular collaborator, plays a fundamental role in this portrayal. On the basis of documents preserved in the Chiarini Library of the Experimental Centre for Cinematography, this article analyses the film's soundtrack in terms of its audiovisual combination and dramaturgical function. The sequence of pieces, based on the rhythms of dances that are varied and distant in time and space, recalls the structure of a baroque suite. This musical choice contributes significantly to the rhythmic intoxication that characterises the play, while the contrast between the cultural codes of the musical parodies and the narrative development creates the grotesque effect. It is probably because of this unique combination that Rustichelli described his score in an interview as 'peculiar', 'different' and 'unusual'.
