Settler Colonialism Without Settlers and Slow Violence in the Gaza Strip

Franco Angeli Edizioni, 2021

Israel's ongoing settler colonialism in occupied Palestinian territory impacts Palestinians' everyday life in all its aspects. In this article we demonstrate how Israel's interventions, in particular since its "withdrawal" from the Gaza Strip in 2005, can be conceptualized through a combined lens of settler colonialism and slow violence. We suggest that settler colonial violence and strategies of carceration, exploitation and elimination of the existing population-without the physical presence of settlers inside Gaza-is not only inherent in the production of a new reality and geography, but also at the core of the transformation of life of Gazans into non-life. While Israel has fewer and weaker moral obligations over Gaza's population, at the same time it creates the possibility of manipulating destructive power and violent practices. With a specific focus on Israel's interventions in the field of health, we examine how power, violence and health are entangled in conflict zones in general and in Gaza in particular, by documenting and critically analysing the effect of violence in general and infrastructure demolition in particular, on the everyday life of Gazans. We conclude that Israel's withdrawal marks not only a continuation but even a radicalization of settler colonialism in the Gaza Strip through (often) slow violence.

War on Gaza: Decades of colonialism led to Israel's genocidal moment

Middle East Eye, 2024

Palestine is the ethical battleground of our time, where the racism inherent in Euro-modern/colonial knowledge is dissected, exposed and resisted. This knowledge system, whether by justification or through silence, echoes the historical pattern of colonial atrocities across the Global South, including the unfolding genocide in Palestine. In this light, the Palestinian experience of colonial life and death encapsulates the global issue of ethics and knowledge.

Gaza, Nakba: Zionism's Hubris

From the European South: A Transdisciplinary Journal of Postcolonial Humanities, 2024

This article reflects on attempts to make sense of the vast atrocity of Israeli violence against the Palestinians since October 7, 2023, arguing that this violence is not only comprehensible but an inevitable outcome of the colonial world order that birthed Zionism and which its violent onslaught exemplifies. Urging a reconsideration of both 'Gaza' and 'Nakba', the article contends that both violation and resistance are constitutive of the Palestinian condition. Recognizing this interconnection reveals that Israel's vicious campaign of eliminatory violence in Palestine will not conclude in heroic triumph, and that this 'war' is better read as the symptom of a decadent power tragically/inevitably failing to accomplish its impossible, inhuman dream of a world without others.

Settler Colonialism and Conflict: The Israeli State and its Palestinian Subjects

Settler Colonial Studies, 2012

In this article I discuss the relationship between Israeli settler colonialism, group identities, conflict, and violence. The paper focuses on '1948 Palestinians', and the relationship between them and the state. I explore the relationship between settler colonialism and communal identity through a case study of an incident of communal violence that erupted in Galilee in 1981 between two different religious groups within the Palestinian Arab community. I investigate the different narratives that emerged to explain and frame the incident. I trace this event to a larger structure rooted in the history of settler colonialism in Palestine, thus shifting attention away from culturalist explanations of 'Arab violence'. In addition to the case in Kafr Yassif, I will briefly discuss other cases to illustrate the pattern in which the Israeli settler colonial state's policies are tied to issues of identity, conflict, and violence within the native Palestinian community. The essay also addresses the importance of this framework to Palestine Studies.

Introduction: the settler-colonial framing of Palestine—Matters of Justice and Truth

International Politics , 2023

As the publication of this forum coincides with the unfolding bombs raining down on the Palestinians of Gaza, the book in question gains heightened significance. Against a backdrop where global audiences are witnessing real-time, genocidal actions by Israel against the Palestinians, contextualizing these horrific events is crucial. An in-depth understanding of the current reality and potential future trajectories requires addressing the root causes and factors that shaped the interaction between the colonizer and the colonized, leading to a highly repressive and unbearable status quo that exploded on the 7th of October 2023. Palestine: Matters of Justice and Truth provides much-needed and timely answers.

Post-occupation Gaza: Israel’s war on Palestinian futures

Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography

The 2005 Israeli Disengagement from the Gaza Strip has left this region in a political and legal limbo. No longer strictly and fully complying with the definition of an occupied territory, the Strip, which has been under siege from 2007, cannot similarly be considered as fully independent. This paper argues that the Israeli control of Gaza is predicated on relegating this control to the past. Accordingly, it offers 'post-occupation' as a conceptual framework for deciphering Israel's modalities of power over the Strip, claiming that rather than signifying a clear break from a now defunct occupation, post-occupation demarcates the persistence of Israeli domination. By rendering Gaza to the status of a post-occupation Israel can infer that Gaza's future has already arrived, and relinquish its responsibilities towards the Strip and its residents through a fabrication of Palestinian political agency, while holding the Palestinian futures captive. The post-occupation condition therefore confounds normative narrations of time, while disrupting the distinction between past, present and future. This examination of the Disengagement and the siege as operating in tandem reveals that Israel substituted a burdensome and costly occupation with a more parsimonious spatial containment of Gaza, which allowed it to retain its grasp of Palestinian futurity.

Past is Present: Settler Colonialism in Palestine | SOAS Palestine Society | 7th Annual Conference | 2011

For over a century, Zionism has subjected Palestine and Palestinians to a structural and violent form of destruction, dispossession, land appropriation, and erasure in the pursuit of a new colonial Israeli society. Too often, this Palestine 'Question' has been framed as unique; a national, religious, and/or liberation struggle with little semblance to colonial conflicts elsewhere. The two-day conference, Past is Present: Settler Colonialism in Palestine, seeks to reclaim settler colonialism as the central paradigm from which to understand Palestine. It asks: what are the socio-political, economic and spatial processes and mechanisms of settler colonialism in Palestine, and what are the logics underpinning it? By unearthing the histories and geographies of the Palestinian experience of settler colonialism, this conference does not only chart possibilities for understanding Palestine within comparative settler colonial analyses. Rather, it also seeks to break open frameworks binding Palestine, re-align the Palestinian movement within a universal history of decolonisation, and imagine new possibilities for Palestinian resistance, solidarity and common struggle.

From the Golan to Gaza: Ethnic cleansing and the colonial logic of Israeli occupation

Syrian Studies Association Bulletin, 2024

History teaches that colonial assumptions of religious purity lead to imperialist projects, ethnic cleansing, and genocide, like the televised genocide in Gaza and the occupation of the Golan Heights. Look closer, though, in the continuities of everyday practices and the threads of another history become visible: the history of ordinary resistance, what the Palestinians have exemplified and gifted to struggles far and wide: “sumud” - steadfastness. In combating the “bad fruit” of occupation, the occupied people of the Golan Heights, and the occupied Palestinians, continue to sow resistance and hope.
