Abstract

This work starts with a general introduction about the beginnings of Hispanism within the academic framework of second language teaching in the United States. There is information provided about the first universities, cultural Hispanic institutions and associations devoted to the study on modern languages. Besides, the work focuses on the job of these institutions in the promotion of the Hispanic language and cultures during the XIX century and beginnings of XX. It is also enhanced the role of Spanish institutions along with their protagonists on the international development and spreading of the Spanish culture and its language as, for instance, the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios, Centro de Estudios Históricos and the Residencia de estudiantes de Madrid in the last part of the period covered by this research.
