International Journal for Educational Integrity, 2021

Headteachers in the community schools are responsible for academic and administrative activities. They are considered role models for integrity practices. However, the situation is different on some occasions. For instance, political interest plays more important roles than qualifications, training, work experience, etc., in school affairs. In this context, a qualitative study was carried out in the purposefully selected two schools – an urban and a rural – to explore the elements that influence school integrity practices. Data collected from the schools were analyzed and interpreted. The findings show that nepotism, unhealthy party politics, and impunity (integrity triad) influence the school integrity practices in Nepal.

The Understanding of Academic Integrity in Primary Schools

2022

Integrity has always been projected as a positive value. Academic integrity is one of the key aspects of the teaching/learning process, which is connected to the principles of ethics in addition to being genuine, honest and reliable. This is the basis for sustainable knowledge as well as a prerequisite for success. The study has been developed with the aim of assessing the understanding of learners and teachers in relation to academic integrity and exploring types of academic dishonesty and the factors affecting it during the primary education stage in Latvia. The study has explored concepts of academic integrity, dishonesty in theoretical literature and binding normative documents in Latvia, as well as the factors influencing them, and the correlation with ages and character features, and forms of academic dishonesty have been discussed. The type of research design is a case study, so the results of the study are not generalizable. The empirical part is based on the survey; the participants were teachers working in the primary education stage (157) and 345 students of Grades 4-9. The results obtained show that students and teachers do not have a shared understanding about the concept of academic integrity and its importance because no common guidelines have been developed for promoting academic integrity. The data also reveal that one quarter of teachers and more than half of the surveyed students have never encountered the issue of academic integrity in their experience. The main types of academic dishonesty mentioned are verbal communication, looking at someone else's work; the main reasons noted are the lack of knowledge and skills, not enough time spent for preparing for a test and desire to obtain a good mark.

Education integrity survey: A suggested measurement of integrity in education sector

Integritas : Jurnal Antikorupsi

Integrity as a concept is usually associated with and measured by one of two separate scopes: personal or organizational. This paper argues that in educational institutions such as schools or universities, integrity measurement should not be done by separating personal and organizational concepts. In addition, integrity in education sector is often discussed just from academic perspective such as cheating, plagiarism or other wrongdoings in classroom or research activity. The measurement concept in this paper also includes non-academic aspects such as administrative services, financial management, and procurement. Educational integrity in this paper combines three concepts which are the character dimension (Istiani, 2015), the Corporate Ethical Value model (Kaptein, 2007), and the classification of corrupt behaviors in education compiled by KPK from various resources (2018). To conclude, the concept of educational integrity should be looked as holistic one which can be assessed from...

International Journal for Educational Integrity

The joy of doing any review is having a legitimate excuse to spend time learning about what other researchers are working on, then to reflect on what is new. This book review with a rich tapestry of current research and thinking about integrity in education and research, is no exception. This publication is the product of a virtual conference that took place in April 2020, which, had the Covid-19 pandemic not arrived, would have been held face-to-face in Dubai. Each of the 15 chapters brings to light new ideas for encouraging academic integrity and ethical conduct, or for deterring and managing academic dishonesty.
