Synthetic compounds with photoprotective property have their limited concentration in sunscreen formulation. Therefore, reaching the maximum UV protection by themselves is difficult. Natural compounds are good consideration to include in sunscreen formulations. Papaya seeds contain large amounts of nutraceutical compounds. However, their presence is often considered as waste. One of many benefits it has is due to the presence of flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. Flavonoid is one of the alternative compounds that provide beneficial effects on skin UV-protection. Therefore, this study aimed to extract the flavonoid compounds in papaya seeds and test its sun protection factor (SPF) value. Extraction of antioxidant activity, phenolic content and minerals in banana peel

The objective of this research project is to establish the optimal conditions for obtaining the banana peel extract with high antioxidant activity, phenolic content and minerals. The main by-product of the banana processing industry is the peel, which represents approximately 30% of the fruit. The banana peel extraction process was optimized by varying different parameters such as drying temperature for banana peels, types of solvent used, various type of solvents ratio, temperatures of extraction and time of extraction. The drying process was done at temperatures of 50 o C-70 o C for 24 hours. The ground banana peel samples were extracted with different solvents (methanol, acetone and distilled water) with different solvents ratio (50%, 70% and 90%). The extraction was performed in a water bath at 40 o C-60 o C for 1-120 min. UV-visible spectrophotometer was used to determine the antioxidant activity and phenolic content. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) used to verify the existence of vitamin C. The minerals composition was determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The result showed that, optimal condition for the extraction of antioxidant activity, phenolic content and minerals in banana peel were drying at 60 o C, extracted by using 70% acetone solvent in the water bath for 2 hours at 55 o C. Concentration of antioxidant activity and phenolic content at this optimal extraction condition was 1061.33±0.03μmol/g and 1474.17±0.02 mg/L respectively. vi ABSTRAK Tujuan projek ini adalah untuk mendapatkan keadaan optimum untuk mendapatkan ekstrak kulit pisang dengan aktiviti antioksidan, kandungan fenolik dan mineral yang tinggi. Bahan buangan utama dari industri pemprosesan pisang adalah kulit pisang, yang mewakili sekitar 30% dari buah. Proses ekstraksi kulit pisang adalah dioptimumkan oleh pelbagai parameter yang berbeza seperti suhu pengeringan kulit pisang, jenis pelarut yang digunakan, nisbah pelarut, suhu ekstraksi dan masa ekstraksi. Proses pengeringan dilakukan pada suhu 50 o C-70 o C selama 24 jam. Sampel pisang tersebut diekstrak dengan mengunakan pelarut yang berbeza (metanol, aseton dan air suling) dengan perbandingan pelarut yang berbeza (50%, 70% dan 90%). Ekstraksi dilakukan dalam penangas air pada suhu 40oC-60oC selama 1-120 minit. Spektrofotometer UV digunakan untuk menentukan aktiviti antioksidan dan kadar fenolik. Kromatografi (HPLC) digunakan untuk membuktikan kewujudan vitamin C. Komposisi mineral ditentukan dengan menggunakan spektrofotometer serapan atom. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan bahawa, keadaan optimum untuk ekstraksi aktiviti antioksidan, kandungan fenolik dan mineral dalam kulit pisang adalah pengeringan 60oC, diekstraksi dengan menggunakan pelarut aseton 70% dalam air selama 2 jam pada 55 o C. Oxidative stress is one of the triggers of various degenerative diseases and metabolic syndrome. Antioxidants are compounds that exhibit the activities of neutralizing and scavenging radical molecules, which induce the process of oxidative reactions in the body. One of the many antioxidant compounds found in plants is flavonoids. Banana peels are known to contain flavonoid compounds. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of banana peel (Musa paradisiaca forma typica). Fruit wastes which are perishable pose a big problem to pollution monitoring agencies; however these problems can be reduced by utilizing the high value compounds present in the food waste. Banana peels contain a reasonable number of antioxidant compounds such as gallocatechin and dopamine. This paper investigates the antioxidant potential of two different varieties of Banana peels (Dwarf cavandish and Musa omini). The peels were extracted with two different solvents (Methanol and Ethanol) using the soxhlet extractor. The results show that ethanolic extracts have higher phenolics and flavonoid contents (336.83 -383.83 mgGAE/100g, 242.83 -252.82 mgRutin/100g) compared to the methanolic extracts of the same banana varieties (299.42 -344 mgGAE/100g, 240.77 -241.23 mgRutin/100g). However methanolic extracts exhibit higher DPPH Antioxidants Activity (30.82% -51.66%) compared to ethanolic extracts (25.44% -30.27%). This implies that antioxidative compounds other than phenolics and flavonoids were also involved in inhibiting the DPPH Radicals. It was also observed that at any concentration between 0.5 -2.5 mg, ethanol extracts of both dwarf cavandish and musa omini had higher reducing power than the other two varieties.

This study was carried out to investigate the chemical composition and biological activity of banana peel extracts; the efficiency of the different solvent systems: aqueous, 80 % methanol, 80% ethanol and 80% acetone was used for extraction of phenolic, flavonoid and tannin compounds. Banana peel relative antioxidants potential by four assays DPPH·, Fe2+-chelating, Reducing power and ABTS·+ inhibitor activities was evaluated. Analysis showed that the percentage of moisture, protein, crude fat and total carbohydrates were 88.10, 13.42, 7.57, 10.44 and 68.31 g/100g DW respectively. For mineral content, potassium is the major element found in banana peel was (9.39 % of DW) followed by magnesium, calcium, sodium and phosphorus were (0.71, 0.44, 0.18 and 0.09 % of DW), respectively. Comparison of total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant potential of local and imported ripe bananas

Bananas are globally used trade crops for nutrition and traditional medicine. The following research aims to study different polarity banana extracts from local and imported ripe bananas and determine the amount of phenols and flavonoids contents, and antioxidant potential by applying various spectroscopic methods. The banana extracts were prepared from the powdered banana samples of Pilipino (Cavendish) and Salalah ripe banana (Somali) by the maceration method with methanol. The methanol extracts were suspended separately in water and successively partitioned by using solvents of different polarity, namely n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, methanol and water in an increasing polarity pattern. The amount of total phenols and flavonoids contents and antioxidant potential were determined by using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, aluminum chloride and diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl methods. The maximum amount of total phenols in the Pilipino ripe banana was detected in ethyl acetate extract, and the minimum was in the n-butanol extract, but in the local Salalah ripe banana the maximum amount of phenols content was obtained in methanol extracts, and the minimum was in n-butanol extract. Similarly, the maximum total flavonoids content in the Pilipino banana was obtained in chloroform extract and the minimum in n-hexane extract with a similar order for total flavonoids content in case of the Salalah ripe banana. Both types of ripe banana crude extracts showed significant antioxidant potential, with the maximum potential in chloroform and n-hexane extracts and the minimum in ethyl acetate crude extract. Therefore, the maximum potential extract of the bananas could be used as natural antioxidants.

Background of the Study: Banana is an edible fruit, botanically a berry produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa (in some countries, bananas used for cooking may be called plantains). Banana are rich source of antioxidant containing polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids which prevent free radical damage, reducing risk of oxidative stress related degenerative diseases. Objectives: The present study was carried out to investigate which solvent extract (aqueous, methanol, acetone and hexane) of Apple banana is more potent content of phytocompound banana available in the local market in Midnapore town. Methods & Materials: Bananas were collected from local market then separate peel & pulp. Then cut all pulp in small pieces and kept at sunlight to prepare extract & ready for different test. Results: Among four solvent extracts (aqueous, methanol, acetone and hexane) of Apple bananas alkaloid is present in high amount in aqueous and methanol extracts and small amount in acetone extract. Phytosterol is present in high amount hexane extract and in small amount in methanol and acetone extracts. Flavonoids are present in high amount in aqueous and methanol extracts. Conclusion: Including anti-oxidant such as alkalide, flavonids, phytosterol, phenolic compounds & tanning are important for human health. Banana contains outstanding phytocompounds that are high in anti-oxidant, antimicrobial and anti-cancer properties. In all over India common people consume banana.

Citrus processing industry generates the large amount of byproducts, which are rich in polyphenols that have high antioxidant properties. These polyphenols can be extracted and utilized in different applications. In present investigation, comparative study was undertaken using maceration (M) and ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) for the efficient extraction of polyphenols from citrus peels of different cultivars such as ‘kinnow mandarin’ (Citrus reticulata) and ‘mousambi’ (Citrus limetta). The total phenols (28.30 mg/GAE g dw), flavonoids (4.40 mg/CE g dw) and DPPH radical scavenging activity (48.23%) were attained from kinnow mandarin peels whereas total phenols (21.99 mg/GAE g dw), flavonoids (2.07 mg/CE g dw) and DPPH radical scavenging activity (39.73%) were obtained from mousambi peels using UAE method.
