2018
Nature-based solutions (NBSs) have been on the forefront of the urban regeneration processes in a later fashion; that direction fundamentally intertwines with the European Commission framework of Research and Innovation policy on “Re-Naturing cities and Green Infrastructure” aiming towards positioning the EU as leader in ‘Innovating with nature’. This research paper exploits the originality of using Co-Creation as Pathway for cities to better implement NBSs, and achieve flexible, open, equitable urban resilience, and adapt climate change strategies. Co-Creation dynamic processes build on involving stakeholders and engaging local community at every stage; moreover, account on collective governance and outputting social, economic and environmental ‘Co-benefits’. Primitively, the aim of this paper is to highlight the innovation of Co-Creation tools towards addressing NBS challenges, as well as, the assessment of front-runner cities’ governmental approaches in facilitations or deficienc...
Regenerating Urban Spaces: A Brief Commentary on Green Infrastructures for Landscape Conservation
2018
The present study debates on the issue of urban regeneration in contemporary cities, adopting a strategic vision which includes the use of vegetation and green infrastructure to create a network of public spaces. Especially, urban periphery lacks of public spaces, meaning a public use of urban space for outdoor activities and social networks. The extraordinary program for the Italian peripheries, addressed to all the metropolitan cities and provincial capitals in 2016, inspired to Renzo Piano idea of “re-sewing” urban fabrics, has been a good opportunity for testing new approaches to urban regeneration. The case study investigated in this study is the financed project for the city of Perugia, which provides different interventions aimed at improving (and developing new) public spaces through vegetation enhancement and a large area destined to vegetable social gardens as a strategy for urban infill. By recovering public spaces with social purpose and providing a comprehensive strateg...
Integrated Urban Regeneration: The Opportunity of Enhancing the Open Spaces
Advanced Engineering Forum, 2014
The paper, draws the attention of the debate a reflection on the possibility of developing, in some urban areas, strategies and actions for the regeneration and redevelopment of the city; bringing to the attention not only the improvement of the spatial and functional dimension of the rundown neighborhoods, but also of the social and environmental dimensions. The valorisation of these areas may benefit from the theory of Ecosystem Services [, which appears to be able to renew the traditional approaches, to land use planning from the perspective of urban metabolism [; in this regard are of great interest those forms of planning of degraded urban fringes that take into account the minimal standard of space and/or rural services by to each inhabitant in order to make an area sustainable. The contribution starts from careful analysis of the rural peri-urban areas of Tuscany, polarized between two apparently conflicting dynamics between them (use of land abandonment and agricultural soil...
Planning with Nature: Sustainable Urban Prototypes for Portuense District in Rome, Italy
The Sustainable City XV
The objective of this study is to regenerate the Portuense district of Rome, in the southwest quadrant of the city, referring to nature-based solutions (NBS) coupled with sustainable solutions in rainwater management. The role of water, both as a resource and as an essential element of urban landscape, was considered. Nature-based solutions include several concepts or technologies ranging from blue-green infrastructure to water saving measures to sustainable rainwater drainage, and their use can be an important tool to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. To this end, high levels of integration between experts from different disciplines are necessary, specifically urban planners, water engineers and ecologists, and the involvement of land and water managers, planners and policy makers on all spatial scales is required. The design solutions in this work were developed following the United Nations 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fitting the following models of city [1]: the Oasis City where NBS solutions improve the thermal well-being of the inhabitants reducing the heat island effect (environmental function); the City of Sponges to increase soil permeability and control rainwater flow making more sustainable the urban drainage system (environmental function); the City for People to improve the liveability and sociability of the spaces (social function). Based on these principles, three design solutions, called prototypes, have been developed: Pocket Park (environmental function), Main Avenue (social functions), Tiber Park (environmental and social functions). The biotope area factor, BAF index, was used here as the main measure to evaluate the effectiveness of the design solutions. The solutions proposed in each prototype can be repeated for all the interventions conceived in the "network of spaces" of the Portuense district.
Sustainability
The current socio-economic dynamics and the consequences induced by the pandemic emergency have generated a reflection on the need to recover the dimension of proximity and to share resources, spaces, infrastructures, and experiences. This solicits a remodelling of the system of public open spaces, based on a resilient, adaptive model; multifunctional and linked to the temporality of the functions that spaces can accommodate. The paper deals with the issues of planning and design of public open spaces around the needs of proximity and welfare. This is achieved through collecting and systematizing state of the art concepts on the role of public space within the urban structure of the city, and the formulation of guidelines for design, deduced from an empirical application conducted on a pilot district in the city of Rome. The paper aims to suggest to policymakers and planners a new approach and a path for future research and practice in the planning and design of more sustainable and...
The paper proposes, through an experimental method, a conceptualisation of theoretical-methodological and practical guidelines for the project on the system of collective open spaces, residual areas, abandoned areas that characterise the contemporary city, both in the urban contexts of the historical city, and in the more marginal areas of the modern suburbs. This methodology was experimented on an historical neighbourhood in Rome (San Lorenzo discrict) starting from the results of some researches conducted in collaboration between Sapienza University of Rome and the Escuela de Architettura, Universidad San Jorge and some design experiments conducted by Gràvalosdimonte design studio. This methodology and experimentation combines the theme of the inter-scalarity of the project (territorial, urban and local scale) with the themes of the flexibility and proximity of functions with respect to local instances and contingencies caused by the pandemic situation and by the sustainability pe...
The role played by the culture of Design in the context of the planning of public space has evolved over time. In the sphere of Architecture, the 1990s saw the opening of an debate that encouraged a process of revising the training methods adopted until that time, in favour of new ones capable of placing people-the true users of objects, spaces, and architectures-at the centre. This raised the possibility of breaking down certain disciplinary boundaries in favour of a transdiscipline, the Design of Spaces and Architectures. Spatial Design calls back into question many of the assumptions of the Urban Planning and Architecture of the short century, starting precisely from the relationship between Space and the user. Through recent case studies, this essay proposes an embryonic taxonomy of public space, basing its perspective upon the scientific principle of the recurrence of certain design solutions. Public Space, Infrastructure, Landscape: an interdisciplinary matrix for urban continuity
The spatial growth of the industrial city corresponds not just to utopia but to a new capacity of production: new kinds of urbanization infrastructures, new urban services organization and new theoretical and practical knowledge, that gave origin to the discipline of urbanism. The decline of this capacity comes with a “crisis” of the industrial model followed by a transition process to a post-industrial urbanity, with complex characteristics that are difficult to synthesize as a uniform model. Rather than focusing on a single system, this transformation process emphasizes different forms of spatial, social, economic and cultural organization and the diversity of emerging urban contexts. The transition seems to carry indeterminacies, difficulties in understanding and conducting transformation in a more uncertain context. If complexity is growing, what elements or strategies can we use to interpret and act in these spaces, in contexts of changing conditions and latent uncertainty? In this paper we intend to show an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing some of the deficits of knowledge, to discuss the complexity of a transition phase. We seek to characterize the new post industrial urban places and the strategic theoretical principle of urbanity – continuity – using a contextual review through a study on the specific case of the South Bank of Lisbon Metropolitan Area. We present a conceptual and operative matrix, based on the hypothesis of urban systems with structuring potential – landscape, infrastructure and public space – as a strategy for the continuity of the Commons. Other outputs of this study aim at a contribution to a more flexible and interactive approach to urban design and planning, focused on interdisciplinary perspectives of urban space production.
RE-URB/ARCH: urban and architectonic regeneration strategies: sustainability models
The Sustainable City VII, 2012
Urban areas cause a set of environmental challenges, which come from the consumption of natural resources and the generation of waste and pollution. These aspects contribute to the development of social and economic imbalance, which continues to grow while demanding new solutions. Therefore urban planning and architecture needs a new and flexible approach, introducing methods and techniques which can adjust to diverse situations and imply different solutions. Architectural design assumes a central role, more relevant than the technological aspects or performances: the design begins from the urban scale, reaches the architectural composition level, for shapes and orientations, and the restoration of the existing building heritage, and finally incorporates also the technological aspects. It allows us to avoid globalizing space solutions and architecture languages, towards an approach that focuses on the specific context. The UNIVPM DICEA department has developed two different scientific researches aiming to detect sustainable models and methods of intervention within the modern city: a) a regulation to evaluate the energetic and environmental quality of Public Residential Buildings for the city of Civitanova Marche; b) a structural document finalized to urban instruments' innovation, for what concerns the city of Fabriano. These two levels have two factors in common: 1) Both focus on cities in a transitional stage; places that express the inadequacy of modern urban planning's techniques involving sustainability, which pursue the dynamics of a territory's transformation but fail to manage them. 2) Both are based on the same procedure used to methodize the suggested solutions; buildings' features become strategic, and so do their orientation and volume, in order to define the energy performance levels. It consists of the invention of a table of combination sets for urban and architectural solutions, which shows all the steps required, from the administrative system to the technical and design guidelines.
Urban Research & Practice, 2018
The article describes the results of a research on the theme of regeneration of urban public spaces in historical centres. A multidisciplinary methodological approach of cooperation of various knowledge was adopted to define, also through the application of open and inclusive participatory approaches, precise intervention actions. The research uses two areas on the edge of the historical city of Cosenza (Italy) as a case study. The research, therefore, has achieved, among its main results, that of reinforcing the awareness that an urban context unable to maintain relationships loses its meaning and becomes but a museum of itself.
